Let me start off by saying “THANK YOU” its about time real women voice their views. I had been watching one of the major TV morning news shows during our most recent fashion week. And although I remember the days when i was a size 7 those days much like “mall chick hair” are gone. Haaa to those of you who are shaking your heads. According to this Fashion Professional (old age cant remember who said it) 68% of women in US are over a size 12 and apparently that is considered a plus size!!! REALLY? I would jump up and down to be a size 12 again. lol Sorry I digress.

I can also completely understand that there are amazing department stores who carry the “better clothes’ for plus size women. My budget and rural address; although does not let me do anything more than peek in the window. So here are a few of my amazing sneaky on the cheap cute pieces that i find. No laughing until you go look
Dollar General!! yes i said it out loud. You can get some really cute seperates for under $15 and its not just my fluffy girl ego. People have given me consistant compliments on “Oh how cute, where did you buy that i want one?”
TJ Maxx: you have to not mind trolling the racks!! But omg this girl loves a tuesday afternoon alone (almost) in a TJMaxx.
I agree with the in the know ladies here that you need a good piece of outer wear and good footwear: The outerwear needs to fit well, it needs to be a piece you will actually wear on a daily basis, no point in spending that good money on something that will just be used for “that special day” I dont know about you but OMG I get a special day I will be in my PJ’s haaa kidding. I would rather have a great jacket that i get compliments on a daily basis and it makes me feel good about wearing in my real life. Same ideas go for shoes. I am a rcovering shoe addict. A knee replacement forced me into “No Heels” I know sisters the HORROR. I still see pretty shoes and drool. But I have overcome!!! I can still wear boots and sandles so my addiction has taken a new direction. Still looking for that great shoe store that has items for real people my latest find is Kohls. again have to be willing to troll thru the clearence and mass of boxes but I do like an adventure. Ok that is my babble for the day. If you like my ideas tell the powers that be here and I can invoke my : “country girl, needs to make more money always looking for a bargin ideas”

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Forever and ever they do! If I cannot find anything in their plus area, I know I will leave with a few accessories.

My experience has been that Nordstrom Rack very rarely has any plus-sized items in stock.  Maybe up to an 18 in some lines, but hardly ever anything larger.  However, you are correct in noting that the flash-sale sites often carry plus sized lines and are worth monitoring.  Also, even if you end up getting lower-priced clothing, a nice bag and shoes can dress them up quite a bit.

I never go in those places because I just assume they won’t have my size. I did go into Lord and Taylor Outlet last week, but the things left there were…passable.

We all know about Nordstrom’s and Saks (and Macy’s and Dillards, etc), but there are a TON of great adult-friendly lines that carry plus size. What about J.Jill? Coldwater Creek? Soft Surroundings? Land’s End or LLBean or Eddie Bauer? All are more reasonably priced and grown-up friendly (without being the tents). Actually the first 3 carry the same items in straight and plus. I’m sorry, but this seems like such a limited perspective on what a 40+ curvy woman would want. There are a lot more items out there at all price points.

I would also point out that it is more about how you put it together than where you bought it. I buy from Asos and Simply Be all the time, but put it together differently than a 20-year-old might. Again, that’s why I started the blog. A 40+ woman has a different lifestyle and different concerns than many 20 year olds. Our wardrobe AND our style can reflect that and still look amazing.

One last comment; the Nordstrom’s Rack’s near me never carry plus-sized stuff. It makes me NUTS. We all know they have a lovely section at their store.
