One thing to know about me, I absolutely love spending hours doing my makeup routine. Sitting at my vanity, taking my time, and picking out just the right products, makes me giddy. But let’s be honest, who has that kind of time regularly? I surely don’t, and neither do most people that I know.

Working as a makeup artist, I get the “I love this, but there’s no way I can do this at home” comments all the time. And mostly, it was about the time it took to achieve a full glam look. But no worries, I’ve perfected a way to get your makeup right in 10 minutes or less!

10 Minute Makeup Routine Step 1: Skip The Foundation

A Quick and Easy 10 Minute Makeup Routine To Look Pulled Together In A Pinch
Image:  George Milton from Pexels

When I’m in a rush, I skip the foundation altogether and opt for a concealer. I use one to brighten my under-eye and another that is my skin tone to spot cover any imperfections. You can use your fingers, a sponge, or a small concealer brush with concealer. The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is a great option to achieve coverage and a bright under-eye.

10 Minute Makeup Routine Step 2: Set It With A Powder

A Quick and Easy 10 Minute Makeup Routine To Look Pulled Together In A Pinch
Image: Fashion Fair

After applying the concealer, I set it with a pressed powder like the Fashion Fair Iconic Pressed Powder. A pressed powder sets the concealer, helps control oil and shine, and gives extra coverage should you need it after using your concealer.

10 Minute Makeup Routine Step 3: Don’t Skip Out On Mascara and Brows!

A Quick and Easy 10 Minute Makeup Routine To Look Pulled Together In A Pinch

Regardless of what makeup look, you’re going for, don’t skip your brows. Brows are the framework for your face, and when you’re in a rush, filling them in with a brow pencil helps you look instantly pulled together. The Brow Assist pencil from Bodyography is an easy-to-use brow pencil that helps shape and perfect your brows in a few simple swipes. In addition, a few coats of volumizing mascara can lengthen the lashes, giving you a brighter, more awake look.

10 Minute Makeup Routine Step 4:Add A Pop Of Color

A Quick and Easy 10 Minute Makeup Routine To Look Pulled Together In A Pinch

For this step, I like to use products that can be used in more than one way—bronzer as an eyeshadow or lipstick as a blush. I love multi-stick products, for this reason, they’re great for adding a wash of color to your cheeks, eyelids, and lips. I recently discovered a new brand called Thread Beauty that has a creamy, pigmented multi-stick product that does all of that. The Blend It sticks comes in 14 shades and is creamy and easy to blend. Keep one or two in your bag for a quick look on the go.

Will You Try This 10 Minutes Or Less Makeup Routine!?

With these tips, it’s easy to look pulled together in a little bit of time. So whether you’re getting ready for your next zoom, dropping the kids off at school, or out for drinks with your friends, you can get a simple look in 10 minutes or less.

Let us know in the comments if these tips have helped!

Hello class, and welcome to TCF makeup class 101! In this series, I’ll be giving you some tips on the basics of makeup application, makeup brushes, tools, and how to pick the right products for you.

In this first installment, we’re talking about the tools you need to create a flawless face. This is a beginner-friendly series and can be a good refresher for those just getting back to wearing makeup.

While I believe that makeup has no rules, and I often apply my makeup with my fingers, it’s good to have the right tools in your stash to make sure your makeup is applied seamlessly. Just like with any art, the right tools are essential to achieving the look you want. It can be overwhelming buying a 25-piece brush set and you have no idea what to do with most of them. In this guide, I’ve narrowed it down to the 5 makeup brushes that you can add to your stash.

Most of these brushes are under $15.00 and can be found at your local drugstore or Ulta Beauty. Get out your notebooks and pencils and let’s dive in.

Makeup Brushes To Help You Create A Flawless Look

Makeup Brushes You Need – 1. Foundation Brush

Sonia Kashuk™ Essential Flat-Top Foundation Makeup Brushes

Foundation brushes are the key to applying your cream, liquid, and powder foundations seamlessly. Brushes with a dense round top like The NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation Brush $15.00 allow you to buff the product into your skin for a smooth finish without streaks. Flat top kabuki brushes also work well for cream and powder foundations.

The flat top picks up more product and allows you to stipple or press the product into the face giving you more control over product placement and fuller coverage. Try the Sonia Kashuk Essential Flat Top Foundation Brush, an affordable makeup brush that’s great for your powder and cream foundations.

Makeup Brushes You Need – 2. Concealer Brushes

real techniques concealer brush 1
Real Techniques Concealer Brush

A concealer brush has a small, firm head with soft bristles. It is meant for picking up liquid or powder, and the small brushes makes application under the eye more precise, and the brush handle makes it easier to control where the product goes. An affordable option is the Real Techniques Expert Concealer Brush -$6.99For spot treating with your concealer, the  Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Concealer Brush has a precision applicator that makes touching up with your concealer a breeze. As an alternative, you can always use the pointy end of your favorite beauty sponge to blend the concealer under your eye and your fingers are always an option.

Makeup Brushes You Need – 3. Contour Brush

When you contour your face, you are carving out the angles that give your face dimension. Contour brushes are often soft and angled which allow you to get into the cheekbones, under the chin, and around the perimeter of your face and softly blend out your contour. You can also use these brushes to apply your bronzer as the angles work well to hit the high points of your face where bronzer belongs.

Makeup Brushes You Need – 4. Blush & Highlighter Brush

Blush and highlighter are my favorite parts of applying my makeup. When choosing a brush for these products, opt for a tapered, fluffy brush that is flat on the side. As an example, the E.L.F. Cosmetics Blush Brush has a rounded top with flat sides which makes it easy to pick up the powder or cream blush. With these types of brushes, you can gradually build up the color and control the placement of the blush.

Makeup Brushes You Need – 5. Powder Brushes

Most powder brushes are soft and fluffy with a rounded head. These brushes are used to pick up the pressed powder or loose mineral powder. Finishing, or pressed powder is used to set your makeup in place once you’ve applied your foundation and concealer. So when setting your face, you don’t want a super dense brush that will move your foundation around.

Setting powder is normally finely milled, so your fluffy powder brush is used to pick up that soft powder and gently buff it into the skin. The EcoTools Full Powder Brush is one of the best drugstore brushes that last and is made for pressed and loose powder. When setting your under eye with a loose powder, I do not use a fluffy face brush, instead I’ll use a fluffy eyeshadow blending brush. This works the same as a fluffy powder brush, but gives me more control to put just enough powder under my eye.

Bonus Tools You Need Beauty Sponge

Beauty sponges pick up more of the product because they are meant to absorb. By pressing the product into your skin with the sponge, you get a more flawless, natural look. Also, the pointy end of a beauty sponge allows you to apply your under-eye concealer and powders with precision. Make sure you’re using your sponge damp every time.

Leave us a comment and let us know if these tips were helpful and what your favorite makeup brushes are.

As we prepare to dust off the cold and gray days of winter and shed some layers of clothing, it’s a good time to refresh our beauty routines. We take meticulous care to make sure we’re hydrated and protected from the harsh weather in the winter.

With spring comes renewal, cleaning out the old to make room for the new. The beauty world is still on a high from Fashion Week, where we saw some pretty familiar trends that seem to be here to stay, but also some fun things that you can add to your regime this spring.

Spring Beauty Edit 2022: The Bare Essentials

As we know with trends, they tend to come and go, but in this beauty edit, we’re giving you some things that you can take with you in spring and beyond. This beauty guide should give you a pretty good start for your spring beauty finds, from skincare to makeup and even trends with hair and nails.

Hair: Spring Edition

When it comes to spring hair, the category is volume. Big hair is here to stay, whether that’s your huge natural afro, beautiful locs, full locs, or a soft and wavy sew-in or half wig. Remember Farrah Fawcett’s hair? That’s the wave this spring… Hair color for spring is also tapping into your fun side; try some spray in hair color that’s temporary and can be easily removed with a good wash and conditioner. For those of us with textured hair, we want to be careful not to use products that will strip our hair of moisture.

My favorite look that I’m seeing for spring is braids with beads. This is not only nostalgic to me, but it’s refreshing to see Black women embracing their inner child by wearing braids with “clack-clack” beads on the ends, just like we did when we were little. You can search Tik-Tok for many inspired styles and find a local hair braider to execute your vision for you.

Skin is In

I don’t know about you, but I love my skin to be glowy all year long. Thankfully, there aren’t many skincare trends because having a good skincare routine is always in style. In the spring, you want to keep your exfoliating rituals up, perhaps switching to a chemical exfoliator instead of a manual scrub.

Exfoliating helps to improve skin issues like clogged pores hyperpigmentation and reduces the look of redness or dark marks from acne. Try the E.L.F Cosmetics Gentle Peeling Exfoliant- $10.00 This gentle peel is perfect for sensitive skin and can gently remove dead layers of skin to reveal a smooth and even complexion.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one kit that gives you everything you need from cleansing to toning and treatment, I recommend Absolute Joi Double Cleansing Oil Kit with Retinol Night Oil – $85.00.

Dr. Anne formulated this skincare line for melanated skin concerns like hyperpigmentation. The award-winning Retinol Night Oil helps you wake up with refreshed skin while treating your specific skincare concerns.

Did you think we’d talk about skincare without mentioning sunscreen? Not likely! Sunscreen is needed all year round, for ALL skin types, yes, even us Black folks. Despite the many many rumors that melanated skin doesn’t require sunscreen, we know by now that that is entirely false. Those dark marks that you can’t seem to get rid of can be aided by using a sunscreen that is at least 35 SPF.

One of my favorite skincare lines, Glow Recipe, recently announced that they are releasing a sunscreen with SPF 50, Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Sunscreen-SPF 50– retails for $34.00 is a gentle chemical and mineral sunscreen that hydrates and gives your skin a glow while protecting it from harmful UV rays. Whatever sunscreen you choose, make sure you’re applying it daily on your face and neck.

Makeup is Fun Again

Of course, the one thing that I keep a close eye on in the spring is makeup trends making their way to the forefront. This spring, makeup is fun again, hallelujah! Colorful, out-of-this-world blush, black lipstick, and insane eyeshadow are a few things I’m most excited about. Here’s what I firmly believe, makeup is always supposed to be fun and express your creative side, whatever that may be. So go ahead and express yourself this spring.

After many moons of being covered with a mask, and I still am, I love that the eyes are getting major play this fall. For eyeshadow, gone are the sculpted, super precise eyeshadow looks. Instead, swiping a wash of color on your eyelids and sampling it up with a colorful graphic eyeliner will replace the heavy cut crease and smokey eye.

Graphic eyeliner has been having a moment since last year, and I love all of the creative ways that you can draw a design on your eyes. Glitter eyeliner is also having a moment because that adds to the creativity of the graphic eye trend. In addition, the NYX Professional Makeup Retractable Eyeliner Pencil in white can be used to draw a graphic line on the top or bottom lid.

Blush, blush, and more blush is the wave this spring. Colorful cheeks in matte shade will set off your spring makeup look. Don’t be afraid to go with a red or purple blush for some extra razzle-dazzle. Let your cheekbones be the stand out in your makeup application. Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish Divine Powder Blush-Lovestruck-  is an excellent option for ultimate color that lasts in a shade that is flattering on deeper skin tones.

Black lipstick is one of my favorite things, and you don’t have to wait until Halloween to wear it. Be daring, step out in a black liquid lipstick with a graphic eyeliner, and watch all heads turn your way. When wearing black lipstick, precision is key when applying it. Make sure you prep your lips thoroughly and use a lip liner to get the look just right. Try the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain – in the shade Night Bird. This is a matte black shade, and because it is a liquid lipstick, it is meant to last.

Your One Stop Spring Beauty Shop

This spring, regardless of whether you follow trends or not, refresh your makeup and skincare stash. Go through and make sure you’re not using expired products. If you’ve had that same mascara since last Christmas, it’s time to toss it and get a new one. That face cream you haven’t used but once from two springs ago? Let it go and get something new.

Let us know what your beauty trends are for the spring. Do you try new things or rotate your tried and true items?

We want to hear from you! Leave a comment below.

Galentine’s Day is the day to go all out with your girlfriends and celebrate each other with love. The dictionary defines Galentine’s Day as “Galentine’s Day, formed by a blend of gal and Valentine’s Day, is a day in which women celebrate their female friendships. The new holiday debuted in a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation.”

There is nothing like the relationship with your good friends, and I love that we have an entire day to celebrate the love of our gal pals. And just like I get dressed to go on Valentine’s Day date, I get just as glammed up, if not more, for Galentine’s Day.

Whether I’m hanging with friends for a movie night or going out for dinner, drinks and dancing, I’m all for overdressing, beating my face and spraying on a bomb fragrance, and going to live it up with my girls!

Here are some ways you can glam up your Galentine’s Day.

We’ve got you covered with some of our favorite product suggestions, from nails makeup to fragrance

Nails on Point

Instead of waiting all day at the nail shop, get an easy and glamorous manicure with some fabulous press-on nails. Press-on nails have come a long way and can now be found in the latest styles, colors, and nail shapes. For example, I love the almond-shaped nails from Static Nails. The Sway In Black nails are a medium-length, almond shape that is pink with black graphic designs. They’re comfortable to wear and easy to apply and will last for up to 2 weeks with proper care.

Say It With Your Eyes

What would a night-out makeup look be without a fantastic eyeshadow look? First, sweep a shimmering bronze or a tri-chrome eyeshadow on your lids for a seductive yet straightforward eye. The Pat McGrath Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette gives you options for these looks and more. Then, top your look off with a pair of the most glamorous lashes from Ace Beaute. The Calliope Lashes are full, without being overwhelming, and add just the right touch to your night on the town eyeshadow.

Lips like WHOA!

Who wants to worry about smeared lipstick while you’re sipping lemon drop martinis and dancing the night away with your girls. Applying a hydrating, liquid lipstick like the YSL Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream Lipstick will give vibrant color that lasts all night. This lipstick comes in 11 shades, from a hot fire red to a soft, nude pink. You won’t have to worry about feathering or fading, so pucker up and enjoy the night.

Smell Delicious

Now that you’ve got your outfit right, nails on point, and face beat to perfection, spray on a signature fragrance that will make you feel and smell sexy, sweet, and ready for the adventures of the evening. I love the sweetness and spiciness of Prada Candy. Or, if you’re going for something more sensual, try the Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Ruby Orchid Eau De Parfum. Whatever fragrance suits your mood, layer it with your favorite body lotion, and to make it last longer, apply it while your skin is still a bit damp.

Galentine’s Day Glam Made Easy

We hope these tips will inspire you to go all out with your gals on Galentine’s Day. Even if you’re having a night in, it’s still fun to get glammed up and kick it with your friends while you celebrate with each other.

The frenzy of the holiday season has come and gone, and I don’t know about you, but I’m worn out and in desperate need of a spa day! Now that January is here, I’m ready to kick up my feet a little before I get started on tackling all of the new year’s goals and to-do lists. Taking care of ourselves is still a top priority for the new year, and it looks like we’ll be at home for a while due to the pandemic. So right now, it’s a great time to incorporate some spa services that you can do at home and save a coin or two in the process.

Here Are 5 Spa Ideas You Can Do Yourself!

All of these at-home spa options are affordable and will elevate your self-care at home.

Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are an easy and affordable way to take 10 minutes to escape with a soothing treatment for your face. Sheet masks are excellent for treating dehydrated and inflamed skin with the serums that the mask is made of. My favorite is honey masks, which are super hydrating and soothing. Sheet masks are a mini facial that you can do quickly and take with you when you travel. The best part is you can get sheet masks for as little as $3 each!

Dry Brushing

We know exfoliating your face is super important, but exfoliating your body is equally important. Dry brushing is simply taking a soft bristle body brush and brushing your body, starting from the legs up in a circular motion. Some benefits of dry brushing include exfoliating and improving circulation and blood flow.

Dry brushing should be done before you take your shower or bath as you’ll be getting rid of dead skin. Make sure you moisturize well after your bath to replenish your exfoliated skin. The brushes are inexpensive and can be purchased from places like Target or your local Marshall’s.

Foot Soak

Listen, just because you’re in between pedicures doesn’t mean you should neglect your feet. A good foot soak is relaxing and an excellent way to take care of and pamper your feet. When your feet hurt or are tired, this can cause your daily activities to be more of a chore. Soaking your feet in an Epsom salt bath will not only help alleviate any pain or soreness but can also boost your mood.

I love Dr. Teal’s lavender Epsom salt soak, it’s affordable, and you can soak your feet or add it to your bath for extra relaxation. Also, regularly giving yourself a good foot massage will help with circulation and the overall health of your feet, plus it just feels so good.

Try Aromatherapy

Essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or bergamot can enhance your relaxation experience by improving sleep and reducing anxiety. I have an oil diffuser from Amazon that I add my oils in before bed or when I need to concentrate or focus. It’s great for bedtime as well. I like to use lavender and chamomile oil in my diffuser or rub a drop or two on my temples. Putting a few drops of your favorite essential oils in your bath will elevate not only smell great but will also aid in sore muscle relief headaches and promote a healthy night’s rest.

Make a Face & Body Scrub

DIY body scrubs are a very easy way to treat yourself to some pampering. It only takes a few ingredients you probably already have to make a scrub that will leave your skin feeling soft and rejuvenated. Before you make a scrub, make sure you know your skin type so you don’t use anything that will cause a reaction or irritation.

One of the easiest ones to make is a brown sugar scrub. Brown sugar is a great exfoliant and gentle enough to be used on your face and body. Mix brown sugar and a small amount of coconut or olive oil into a bowl, and apply to your body, elbows, knees, and neck. Leave it on for about 5-10 minutes, massage gently into your skin, and then rinse with warm water.

I make a lip scrub with brown sugar and vaseline and keep a small jar of it on my vanity. Using a lip scrub is great for making sure your lips are soft, exfoliated, and ready to apply your favorite lipsticks.

Since we may be inside for the winter with the pandemic raging on, now is a great time to save a coin or two while giving yourself a relaxing spa day from the comfort of your home.

Let us know in the comments if you have tried any of these DIY spa treatments or what your favorite at-home spa idea is.

I remember watching the Oprah Winfrey Show when she had her big 40th Birthday celebration. She had other famous women like Gladys Knight, Patti, and Aretha all sitting around and telling them how much they loved turning 40.

They were all super glamorous, making turning forty sound like something to celebrate instead of fear. When I saw that, I knew that is how I wanted to feel when I turned 40, free, glamorous, and self-assured.

Things Change in Your 40’s, and I Embrace It

It’s true what they say; things do change once you hit 40. Not in the overly dramatic, over-the-hill trope that society has for women of a certain age. Of course, there are naturally occurring physical changes, slower metabolism, achy joints, and all that. But for me, it’s been more of a mental and emotional shift.

The maturity and self-awareness that I’ve experienced in my 40’s have been the most noticeable and most appreciated change. I’ve opened myself up to new possibilities in the way I wanted my life to look and let go of the societal ideals of how it “should look.”

Play By the Rules? No Thanks.

I don’t play by the rules when it comes to beauty. I wear vibrant eyeshadow or black lipstick if the mood suits me. Being in your 40’s or older, you’re expected to tone it down as you age, but that’s not my preference. Instead, I use products that enhance my skin and worry less about every blemish or imperfection being covered. Though I’m trained as a makeup artist, I pay close attention to my skin and have established a solid skincare routine as I age. Regular exfoliation and hydrating serums help keep my skin healthy and glowing.

Ageing is a Blessing

The best way to describe my life at 46 is ‘more.’ I’ve never felt more confident, more beautiful, and freer than I do right now. I see aging as a blessing. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to grow older. My 40’s are LIT, and I believe it’s just going to get better from here.

True story, as a teenager and young lady, I had flawless skin. No, seriously, not so much as a pimple or scar blemished my skin throughout high school and college. But, of course, it could have had something to do with the fact that I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup, or maybe I was just lucky. So imagine my surprise when I hit 30, and all of that changed. Birth control and other hormonal changes wreaked havoc on my skin and skincare routine , and I had no idea how to handle it.

My Current Skincare Routine

In my 40’s I still have some of the same skincare concerns like hormonal acne and hyper-pigmentation, but now, I have a pretty solid routine in place to handle it all. Instead of following all the trends for skincare, I keep my routine as simple as possible.

For me, that means to cleanse, tone, exfoliate, treat and hydrate. It’s easier for me to work with what’s working because that has yielded the best results.

CLEANSE:

My cleanser is the least expensive item in my routine. Why, well, I use it for 60 seconds and then rinse it down the drain. So spending 60 dollars on a cleanser makes no sense for my pockets. Instead, I’ve found effective cleansers and makeup removing balms for under 20-25 dollars.

Since I wear makeup frequently, I double cleanse, meaning I use an oil or balm formula to remove the makeup, then use a clarifying cleanser to remove any excess dirt or makeup. I have combination skin, leaning on the dry side, so I like cleansers that won’t strip my skin. My favorites are the Neutrogena HydroBoost gel cleanser and the Fresh Soy Makeup Removing Face Wash.

TONE:

My toners have to do something specific for me, like exfoliate or hydrate. My toners work to nourish the skin and replenish after I’ve done my cleansing. On the days that I use an exfoliating toner, its’ either the Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant or the Bliss Clear Genius serum and toner. Both contain salicylic acid and work to reduce the look of pores, control blackheads, and gently exfoliate dead skin.

TREAT:

Serums are where my money goes in my skincare routine, simply because they are the products that absorb into your skin and treat specific concerns. Applying my serums is the best part of my routine because I know that it’s doing what needs to be done in terms of treatment.

I have hyper-pigmentation and some acne scars, so I use a dark spot correcting serum like the Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum. It gently fades my dark marks over time and doesn’t irritate my skin. Hydrating serums are bae, and I have so many that it’s hard to choose a favorite. But hydration is crucial in my routine, so I make sure to use a serum with hyaluronic acid as its top ingredient. For brightening, I use a vitamin C serum, like the one from Bliss. It’s hydrating, brightens, and is easy on the pockets.

HYDRATE

With my aging skin, hydration is so necessary. Fine lines are creeping up around my eyes, and I have naturally dry skin on my cheeks, so I stay ready with my creams and emollients. I start with an eye cream. Dark circles are genetic, so I use eye creams primarily for moisture and fine lines.

I'm 46, And This Is My skincare routine

A favorite way to keep my under-eye hydrated is a dab of Vaseline at night. During the day, I use a light moisturizer then add my sunscreen (don’t skip your sunscreen). At night, I use a heavier moisturizer and facial oil. I love the Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate +Glow Dream mask with Vitamin C. It’s absorbent and moisturizes my skin without feeling greasy, plus it has Vitamin C, win!

I use facial oil a couple of times a week, especially in the colder months. Rosehip oil or marula oil are my favorites. Both are calming after a bout of hormonal acne and soothe irritated skin. Honestly, if I finish my night skincare routine and I don’t look like a glazed donut, I haven’t done enough, ha!

Let’s get real, there is nothing cute about being ashy. Winter is officially here and as it gets colder, we’re layering on more clothes to keep warm and our skin protected. It’s time to get our skincare together!

What are we layering on under our clothes? Our skin is more delicate during the colder months and we should do more to protect it and keep it happy ash-free.

My wintertime skincare routine doubles up on hydration and exfoliation. Drier weather and low humidity draw moisture from the skin and can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. The goal is to protect and pamper your skin from head to toe,

Here’s a tip, layer your skincare starting in the bath or shower. Start by using a hydrating soap or body wash, then body oil while your skin is still damp to seal in the moisture from the shower. Heavier creams and lotions are your besties in the winter, emollients soften and soothe dry skin, so don’t be afraid to lay them on thick.

Here are some of the skincare products we think will help keep your skin in good condition this winter. From body oils to body wash, facial moisturizer, and even a classic favorite that you probably already have at home.
