Sports Illustrated plus size models deserve all the spotlight!

If you didn’t know, in 2016, runway star Ashley Graham made history as the first voluptuous woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. The show-stopping beauty was featured in a purple-and-yellow bikini on the front of the publication’s celebrated swimsuit issue, which spawned a new age in the body positivity movement.

At the time, Graham spoke to People magazine about what the representation meant not only for her but also for fellow full-figured ladies around the globe. “I thought Sports Illustrated was taking a risk by putting a girl my size in the pages,” the once-rookie told the outlet. “But putting me on the cover? They aren’t just breaking barriers; they are the standard now. This is beyond epic!”

“Girls who are insecure about their bodies, girls who feel ‘fat,’ girls who have cellulite, girls who have stretch marks on their body — those are all the things that I had as a kid, and I never had a woman like me growing up to look at,” she added. “I had my mother, and that’s one thing, but to have somebody who has cellulite, who has things that jiggle, who has back fat and talk about how you can be an overcomer and not let society take you down for all of that… that’s real.”

Sports Illustrated debuted in 1954 and has since served as a leading force in sports media. The news empire was founded by the late journalist Stuart Scheftel. It became widely known for its annual swimwear section, which began in 1964 and featured numerous (mainly fit) female celebrities posing for the spread.

“The moment that I got the cover and saw it for the first time, I knew that my life was going to change forever,” Graham gushed in a YouTube video about the experience. “Big girls are here to stay! You know what I’m saying?”

Ultimately, Graham’s groundbreaking accomplishment catapulted her to global stardom, paving the way and opening the door for other larger-framed queens to make their mark. And today, we are sharing the other Sports Illustrated plus size models who you should know and follow!

Layering is a powerful technique in fashion, especially for plus size women. And as we are in the throes of fall, we thought to share a few fun layering tips to help you navigate the chill in the air. Layering not only adds depth and interest to outfits but also allows for versatility and comfort. With the right strategies, you can enhance your silhouette, express your personal style, and navigate the changing seasons with confidence.

To help you dress with confidence, we have a few effective layering tips that will elevate your wardrobe!

A Few Layering Tips to Play with for Fall

1. Start with the Right Base

The foundation of any layered outfit is the base layer. Choose pieces that fit well and are made from breathable fabrics. Opt for fitted tank tops or tees that hug your curves without being too tight.

Look for materials like cotton or modal blends that provide comfort and stretch. A well-structured base layer can serve as a canvas for your outfit, allowing you to add layers without adding bulk. Avoid overly loose or baggy first layers, as they can create a bulky appearance under your outer layers.

2. Embrace Open Cardigans

Open cardigans are fantastic layering pieces, especially for the plus women. They provide the perfect amount of coverage without overwhelming your frame. When selecting a cardigan, pay attention to the length and structure. A cardigan that falls just below the hips can create a flattering vertical line, elongating your silhouette. Opt for styles with a bit of drape or asymmetrical cuts to add visual interest.

Don’t be afraid to play with textures and colors to keep your outfit engaging. Wearing a long, flowing cardigan over a fitted turtleneck or a seamless tank can create a beautiful balance.

3. Play with Proportions

Layering is all about balance and proportion. If you’re wearing a looser piece on top, such as an oversized sweater, pair it with a more fitted bottom, like tapered pants or a pencil skirt. This creates a harmonious look without sacrificing comfort.

Conversely, if you opt for wide-leg trousers, consider a more structured top to balance your proportions. Incorporating a belt can also help define your waist. Feel free to experiment with different styles and cuts to find what works best for you.

4. Add Accessories

Accessories are a key component of layering and can significantly enhance your outfit. Scarves, statement necklaces, and bold arm candy can provide pops of color and texture that draw the eye.

A chunky scarf can add warmth and dimension to your look, while a long necklace can create a vertical line that elongates the body. Don’t shy away from wide-brim hats or stylish handbags—they can take your layered outfit from simple to chic.

5. Experiment with Different Textures

Layering isn’t just about adding more pieces; it’s also about mixing materials to create visual interest. Consider combining knits with denim, leather with chiffon, or cotton with lace. Textured layers can elevate your look, making it feel more curated and fashionable.

For example, wearing a chunky knit sweater over a silky dress can create a stylish contrast that keeps the outfit dynamic and eye-catching. Just remember to keep color palettes cohesive to maintain harmony while playing with textures.

6. Opt for Tailored Outerwear

When it comes to outer layers, tailored pieces are essential. A well-fitted blazer or structured jacket can instantly elevate a layered ensemble. A tailored trench or peacoat can beautifully complement your outfit without adding bulk.

Aim for outerwear that emphasizes your curves, and remember to have fun with colors and prints that express your personal style.

7. Don’t Forget Fit

Lastly, the fit is crucial in mastering layers. Avoid going too tight or too loose—aim for pieces that comfortably skim your body. Consider getting some items tailored to ensure they fit perfectly, particularly if you find specialties that you adore but need adjustments.

The right fit not only enhances your silhouette but also boosts your confidence. Take the time to try things on, and don’t hesitate to explore various brands since sizing can vary significantly.

Layering is an exciting way for women to express their personal style while staying comfortable and fashion-forward. By embracing the right base layers, experimenting with different textures, and focusing on proportion and fit, you can curate fashionable outfits that make you feel fly. So go ahead—layer up, have fun, and celebrate your unique style!

Hey, curvy besties! Let’s talk styling tips for plus size brides. As we know, the wedding industry isn’t the most inclusive. It’s been a slow climb for change, leaving many plus size brides feeling alone when shopping for their dream wedding dress. Unfortunately, not all boutiques carry plus size dresses, meaning you have to use your imagination to get the picture-perfect moment you want when you try on your dress.

The Anxiety of Finding the Perfect Dress

Every plus size bride dreams of finding “the dress,” but the journey to that moment can be stressful, especially in an Ozempic world. Walking into a bridal boutique can sometimes feel intimidating when most of the samples are far from your size. The fear of not finding a dress that fits your body or makes you feel like the bride of all brides can dampen the excitement of wedding planning.

It doesn’t feel like bridal brands are doing their part to push for size inclusivity beyond mid-sizes. According to The Knot, out of 35 fashion events during the NY Bridal Fashion Week earlier this year, they only witnessed ONE curvy model. Let that number sink in—one curvy model. Do you see why plus size brides are frustrated? So, what if that one brand that featured a plus size option isn’t in a bride’s area? And I am not tipping my hats off to the brand that had the one curvy model; we don’t accept crumbs.

Plus size brides are left scrambling to figure out when the bridal industry should be there for them, just as smaller-sized brides are. Furthermore, will the brands get it right with the next cohort of NY Bridal Fashion Week coming in October?

Luckily, you know TCF is solution-oriented! There’s a stunning dress out there for everyone, and with the right mindset and a little preparation, you’ll find the perfect one. From finding a dress that makes you feel like the queen you are to choosing the right accessories, we’ve got you covered with the best tips for plus size brides.

Here are four styling tips for plus size brides to remember when purchasing their wedding dress.

Your Body Is PERFECT

Before you go wedding dress shopping, understand your body is perfect just as it is. Encouraging anyone to take up bad eating habits of not eating or go to drastic measures with extreme dieting for the “perfect dress” is not OK ever. If you want to make changes, that’s fine. But everything needs to be done in healthy moderation. Please do not let a world that promotes diet culture make you feel less than.

Do Your Research

Not all bridal boutiques are the same, nor will they carry bigger sizes. Do as much research as possible to find one that would best cater to your needs. Find the nearest plus size bridal boutique where you can shop, and if it’s not in your area and you’re up for traveling, make a trip out of it.

Bring The RIGHT Support!

Listen, I know we love our family and friends, but sometimes they can’t be in the room with us when looking for our wedding dress. Friends and family (heavy on family) might mean well, but sometimes, their presence can be counterproductive to the goal, especially if they make comments like “Diet before your day” or “We want her to look smaller.”

Think About You

It’s YOUR big day, so make sure your dress reflects your style and wedding theme. Fashion stylist Alysia Cole shows brides it’s OK to take up space on their day. Find an option that makes you happy, no matter how extravagant. Sometimes, dress shopping comes with a lot of unnecessary opinions from family and friends, but do not let them sway your decision, which leads me to tip number three.

With these tips for plus size brides, you’ll be ready to walk down the aisle with confidence, style, and a lot of love. Finding the perfect dress for a plus size bride is not just about fitting into a sample size. It’s about embracing your body, celebrating your curves, and choosing a look that makes you feel like the best version of yourself.

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has long been the epicenter of style, creativity, and cultural expression. It often showcases the latest trends, setting the tone for fashion around the world. However, as a plus woman, my relationship with NYFW feels a bit complicated. On one hand, there’s the desire to stand resilient among fellow plus size counterparts and even join protests against an industry that has too often overlooked our bodies.

On the other hand, there’s the undeniable appeal of inspiration and networking opportunities at such a pivotal event, reminding us that while the runway may not always represent us, the influence of fashion can be found everywhere.

Standing Strong Together: Advocating for Change

When we consider the representation — or the lack thereof — of plus bodies at NYFW, it’s hard not to feel a sense of urgency to advocate for change. Each season, as plus size women, we witness the same trend: slim silhouettes dominating the runway while our unique curves remain largely invisible.

This lack of inclusivity can be disheartening, fueling frustration and a desire to boycott the event altogether.

By choosing to stand in solidarity with fellow plus size allies, we can amplify our voices. This can take shape in protests, social media campaigns, or developing alternative events that prioritize celebrating all body types. The goal is not just to highlight the absence of plus representation but push for an industry-wide transformation toward true inclusivity.

The message is clear: Our bodies deserve to be celebrated, not sidelined. Thus, the choice to boycott NYFW as a plus size woman serves as a bold statement against an industry that has consistently overlooked us.

Finding Inspiration Beyond the Runway

However, we live in a world where creativity knows no size, and inspiration can spring from unexpected places. Even if NYFW may not fully represent plus size bodies on the runway, attending the event has its unique benefits.

NYFW is a visual feast of innovation, artistry, and cultural expression. From street style, accessory trends, and the mixtures of patterns to textures and colors, the opportunities for inspiration are abundant, even if we don’t see models who reflect our bodies.

Moreover, the fashion world is evolving. While many high-end shows might still stick to traditional sample sizes, there’s a growing movement toward inclusivity in fashion. Many designers recognize the need for their collections to transcend body boundaries, even if it isn’t always reflected on the runway. For the plus size girl seeking style inspiration, the energy surrounding NYFW can be a powerful motivator.

Networking: Seizing Opportunities

One crucial aspect of events like NYFW that cannot be overlooked is the potential for networking. Connecting with industry professionals, emerging designers, and fellow fashion enthusiasts can be paramount for those of us in the fashion community. By isolating ourselves in frustration, we may miss vital opportunities that could help shape our careers.

While walking the runway is not currently an option for many plus girlies, engaging in dialogues, collaborating on projects, or simply attending events can foster connections that build bridges toward greater inclusivity. The conversations happening backstage and on the sidelines of shows are often where real change begins. By participating in these dialogues, we can express our desire for more representation, potentially influencing the very designs that will one day find their way onto the runway.

The Middle Ground: Embracing Duality

So where does that leave us? As plus size women navigating the world of NYFW, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We can champion change and demand greater representation while still drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of fashion presented before us. We can choose to attend, not just as passive observers but as active participants ready to shape the narrative.

Ultimately, the decision to attend NYFW lies in the balance between advocating for representation and embracing the potential growth inherent in the experience. Whether walking the picket line or the bustling streets of New York in our trendiest attire, we each blaze a trail toward a more inclusive industry. By combining our efforts, we can have our voices heard while gathering the inspiration necessary to express our fashion stories — curves and all.

Growing up, terms like “big-boned,” “chubby,” “plump,” and “heavyset” ran rampant within the communities and homes we lived in. If rude aunties weren’t emphasizing the size of our frames at family functions, neighborhood bullies threw around the socially controversial word “fat” to hurt our feelings. However, as terms like “thick” and “curvy” gained popularity, some of us were left to question: Am I plus size?

It is interesting to note that “Plus Size” is a term that originated in the early 1900s, was birthed by Lane Bryant. At its inception, the term was “Misses Plus Sizes.” As the category evolved, so did the term.

In the early 2000s, there was a peak in the phrase “plus size” when the fashion world attempted to include clothing for women of larger body types. Due to insincere diversity missions, brands began to use models with waists that only extended a few centimeters over the industry’s “norm” to represent the plus size standard. Within the blink of an eye, people with slightly broad shoulders or size 10 were pushed forward as plus representations.

However, on the fashion front, more work still lies ahead. Over the years, the industry has evolved from constantly displaying small thigh gaps to a realistic array of pudgy stomachs and wide hips. Unfortunately, many still find themselves perusing the size charts of online boutiques for hours — wishing, wondering, and waiting for someone whose shape resembles theirs to leave an authentic review. Today, that problem remains when adding an extra 2-3X to the end of the item tag.

What Classifies You as Plus Size?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “plus size” is used to “describe someone who is larger than average in size.” Interestingly, the term holds different meanings around the globe.

In this day and age, being plus size isn’t as subjective as it once was. The effects of living life as a plus size woman are validated through the experiences we come up against daily. From shopping difficulties to social discrimination, even those who are mid-size have experiences vastly different from those who are plus size.

To some, a size as small as 8 to 10 could be considered the starting point of plus size, while others stress 12 to 14. Nowadays, companies promote a size 14/16 as the beginning level of plus size. However, the language around this subject grows even murkier as we add in the shape of one’s body with their size. However you classify your size, there still lies the challenge or push back against the “societally acceptable” version of larger women shaped like Coke bottles.

Navigating This World as a Plus Size Person Shouldn’t Have to Be Hard

Here is one thing to note… Plus Size is only a category or classification, NOT a precursor or definition of your worth, value or beauty. But… while sizing does play a huge factor in determining where your categorization may fall, the everyday nuances of maneuvering in society as a bigger person are telling enough.

It’s in the looks of discomfort as we stride through the department stores, taking up space on aisles that aren’t even wide enough, to begin with. It’s in the comedic drawl when we ask for another chair or garment to (better) accommodate our shapes because we “shouldn’t have let ourselves gotten like this anyway.”

It’s even in the charts of the physicians who hurt us more than help us by writing every ailment off as a result of “being overweight.” An overactive thyroid, polycystic ovary syndrome, or even diagnosed mental issues that have developed a deep-rooted trauma bond with food are all real-life obstacles that we often face.

So, the next time we’re frowned upon (or even laughed at) after begging the world to save a seat for us or add an extra stitch to a dress or inch to a bra strap, maybe these individuals should think of all the women suffering in silence from medically induced obesity who’ve only ever wanted was someplace to fit.

Fatphobia is real, and pear shapes (smaller top, bigger bottom) shouldn’t be where inclusivity stops.

Despite the hardships and technicalities regarding one’s weight, we, as plus size women, can (most definitely) wear what we want and wear it well. However, the agony comes with the fight we have to put up to have flattering and attractive pieces to choose from. Such roadblocks often lead to hits to our self-esteem, allowing our insecurities and some of these companies’ failure to expand (and lack of compassion) to make us feel as if we simply just don’t belong.

Or… as if there’s something we need to change to meet their standard and exist comfortably. All along, it’s the world that needs to adjust — not us — and realize that one-size-fits-all doesn’t work for… all. Our desire to add something other than floral fabrics to our wardrobes shouldn’t be an inconvenience but a courtesy. Hiring someone who looks like us and understands the style necessities for us may be an extra bill for their bank account, but it will inflict a much-needed, decades-long change in plus size fashion.

All that aside, if you’re wondering, Am I plus size? Your answer lies in the relief you feel when you don’t have to walk into a retailer and be bombarded with disappointment at the little to no selections available. Your answer lies within the exhale you can take when you encounter someone who remembers that you’re just as much of a human as they are; regardless of the width of your waist, marks stretched across your body, or the amount of Xs behind your clothing size.

YES… plus size male models are (and have always been) in!

If we’re being honest, they’ve been here the whole time, but unfortunately, their market doesn’t get as much recognition as their female counterparts. You may ask, why? Well, in theory, the public scrutiny and ostracization of full-figured bodies have affected women more than men — at least, from a commercial standpoint. Thus, with the rise of the body-positive movement, women were prioritized among the celebration of larger individuals.

However, while it’s true that the increased visibility of bigger ladies was long overdue, it’s essential to spotlight the men making moves and cultivating a lane of their own. The representation of guys on the heavier side is necessary for more reasons than one. Although it’s not talked about enough, men struggle with body image and self-esteem issues as well.

Ans when you factor in that the Big & Tall industry had reached 34 Billion in 2023, we definitely need to show more love to the Big & Tall folks moving the industry forward! So how about getting to know a few of the Big & Tall Models who are bringing it??

Hot & Handsome Plus Size Male Models You Should Follow

Zach Miko

Zach Miko was the first plus size male model to sign with premier modeling agency IMG Models in 2016. The influencer introduced the company’s ‘Brawn’ division, a sector specifically tailored for big and tall men. From commanding the catwalk to taking over the timelines, Miko hasn’t ceased in his mission to strip away society’s fatphobia.

“I didn’t know I was allowed to have a positive self-image, period. I was never told it was OK to look like me, he told Yahoo! in a 2023 interview. “I wanted to be something that young guys could look [up] to — just someone to tell them that they’re doing OK, that they are OK. And that no matter the size or the shape of their body, they’re still a valid human being.

With over 200,000 followers (collectively) on Instagram and Facebook, Miko has already made an impact. Aside from modeling, he has his own clothing line  (in collaboration with plus size men’s retailer KingSize) called Meekos.

According to a sit-down with Dia & Co, Miko fell into the field through acting. Some of his earlier work includes an appearance in the Jennifer Lopez-led series Shades of Blue, along with ads for Allstate, Progressive, ESPN, and Target.

Tevin “Milo” Evans

Tevin “Milo” Evans is a stylist, model, and all-around creative raised in Brooklyn, New York. With a decade of experience in wardrobe, it wasn’t until 2017 that he was approached by digital publication Underdog Men to model for them, which “snowballed” his career.

Evans has landed features in GQ France, Vogue, Lampoon Magazine, A Magazine Curated By, The Portrait Project, and Native Son, among others. Additionally, he is the host of his own podcast, Broke & Privileged.

Without a doubt, Evans has been making room in the fashion industry beyond societal norms or superficial beauty standards — and we’re here for it!

Alex Frankel is notable for being Lululemon’s first big and tall model. Currently signed to Wilhelmina Models, Frankel runs his own body acceptance platform called Hot Fat Guy Club, a digital space that advocates for the plus size community as a whole.

When speaking with theCurvyMagazine in 2018, Frankel noted that he experienced alienation because of his size as a child. “It wasn’t really the abuse. It was the way I was looked at, treated, or ignored. I was just the sweaty guy with man boobs. I was always teased because of my weight and my looks.”

Frankel now has over 100,000 followers on TikTok, and all eyes are certainly on him. But this time… in a good way.
