Fashion Week just passed and while there were some plus size highlights, the lack of representation was the overwhelming theme (again). It’s not surprising that research shows that 81% of women don’t feel represented by fashion advertising in general and a whopping 90% don’t feel represented by fashion models or runway shows!

Given that we ALL have to wear clothes, we should all be able to find and buy clothes that fit not just our body, but also our style, our budget and our values. But for many women that is not the case.

New US body data, published by social-shopping platform Mys Tyler, shows that more than half (54.4%) of women in the US wear a size 14 or above — considered “plus size” by the industry. And despite plus size being the majority, this segment of consumers has it the worst when it comes to shopping, with a host of additional limitations beyond those experienced by the straight and mid-sized categories.

If we can talk about it more, perhaps we can all impact the change we need to see? To start off the conversation, we asked three women in the fashion industry to talk about gaps and opportunities in the plus size market.

Three Women on the Gaps and Opportunities in the Plus Size Market

Alison Zupancic: “My experience as a plus size model & creator”

“The plus size market remains underserved and now, actively regressing during the Y2K resurgence”

I’m Alison Zupancic (@curvygirldc), a DMV-based plus size content creator passionate about size inclusivity, diverse representation, and advocating for women’s health. Living with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease, I’ve learned to challenge limitations, both in my personal life and within the fashion industry, encouraging others to do the same.

While we’ve made progress, the fashion industry still struggles with size inclusivity. The plus size market remains underserved and now, actively regressing during the Y2K resurgence. As a model and creator, I’ve seen how a lack of representation and limited sizing can make women feel excluded from fashion that should celebrate them.

One of the biggest gaps is the lack of fashionable, sustainable clothing in extended sizes. Many brands claim to offer plus, but often fall short in providing trendy, high-quality garments past a size 22. This issue is worsened by the fast-fashion industry, which tends to neglect sustainability in plus size designs. I’d love to see more brands offer well-made, stylish pieces for all body types while prioritizing sustainable fashion.

Each fashion week, plus size models remain underrepresented in campaigns and on the runways. The industry continues to highlight and reward thinner models, leaving out the vast majority of body types that exist in the real world. Representation isn’t just about fashion—it’s about empowerment & visibility. It’s time for the industry to embrace meaningful and constructive conversations with the plus community, fostering a space that reflects and celebrates all.

Kemi Ajibare: “My experience as a fashion stylist”

“Plus size sections are frequently reduced to basics, devoid of the trendy, fashion-forward pieces that many clients desire, which can prove challenging.”

I’m Kemi (@styledbykemi), a personal stylist and image consultant, passionate about helping everyday professionals elevate their style with modern, versatile wardrobe essentials. While fashion celebrates diversity in many forms, it needs to improve when it comes to size-inclusivity. Many of my clients are plus size, and despite this category representing a significant portion of consumers, it is frequently overlooked by the industry which can lead my clients to feel frustrated and alienated.

Among the frustrations are the limited options available (a key reason they seek out my help to point them in the right direction and save them time on research). Plus size sections are frequently reduced to basics, devoid of the trendy, fashion-forward pieces that many clients desire, which can prove challenging.

The fit and quality of plus size options can also be subpar. Many brands simply scale up their designs without considering the unique proportions and needs of plus size bodies, for my clients this often results in lots of trial and error with ill-fitting garments.

And finally, so many brands are missing out because they lack plus size representation in their advertising and merchandising (even when they carry the sizes), which sends a message to plus size women that they are not the intended audience.

Brands that don’t cater, or poorly cater to, plus size women are missing out on servicing the majority of the market. Fortunately, I’m seeing more brands wanting to serve this market better. For brands looking to make a change in this space, here are some things to consider:

1. Expand size ranges thoughtfully by working with plus size fit models and considering the proportions and comfort of larger sizes. A size-inclusive collection should offer the same style, quality, and attention to detail.

2. Incorporate diversity of plus size bodies across advertising, campaigns, and runway shows.

3. Price consistently across sizes, plus size consumers should not be subjected to higher prices.

4. Create an inclusive shopping experience by offering your full range of sizes in physical stores, not just online, and by training staff to provide respectful and knowledgeable service to all customers. A welcoming atmosphere can significantly impact the shopping experience for plus size individuals.

Brianna Siciliano “My experience as a plus size shopper”

“Plus-size isn’t one-size-fits-all, yet when I look at fashion ads, I mostly see hourglass figures, even in 2024!”

Three Women on the Gaps and Opportunities in the Plus Size Market

I’m Brianna Siciliano (@briannamaria95), Brand & Community Manager at Mys Tyler. I’ve been passionate about plus size representation for most of my life, in college my honors thesis explored the ways plus size bodies are represented in media.

As a plus size tween turned teen turned woman/adult, fashion has always been a struggle. I can’t remember a time where I was able to walk into a shopping mall (or any store for that matter, excluding the very select plus size brands) where I was able to find options that fit my full-figured, tall (6 foot 1) frame. And let’s not even talk about stylish, trendy options! As a result, I’ve primarily shopped at exclusively plus size brands like Torrid and Lane Bryant. While I’m thankful they cater to plus sizes (beyond small and mid-fats!), being restricted to two brands is quite boring.

Plus size isn’t one-size-fits-all, yet when I look at fashion ads, I mostly see hourglass figures, even in 2024! I have a bigger belly, wide hips, and a bigger butt, but I rarely see bodies like mine represented. We make up the majority of the population, yet we’ve been marginalized and othered for so long.

Three Women on the Gaps and Opportunities in the Plus Size Market

There’s a lot that brands are getting wrong. Some market themselves as being size inclusive but only go up to a XXL-XXXL, or their “plus sizes,” are actually sized-up straight sizes and not designed for plus size bodies. Styles can be quite matronly, boring, or ugly, and nothing like their straight size pieces (which also have a much larger selection). And it’s frustrating when brands offer plus sizes, but don’t use plus sized models in their advertising.

Universal Standard is one of the few brands that’s truly inclusive in their sizing and fit. They offer showroom pop-ups across the country where you can meet with a stylist and try on pieces before ordering. I own a few pieces from their collection and I love supporting a brand that supports my community!

There are some other brands doing a pretty good job catering to the plus market, like What Lo Wants, Wray NYC, and Rebdolls, all of which I haven’t tried, but have seen positive things about online. But we still have a long way to go.

What is YOUR perspective on the state of plus size fashion? Do you have similar thoughts as these three about the gaps and opportunities in the plus size market or did they miss something not mentioned?

Can you relate to any of these women? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

New York Fashion Week kicks off on September 6th, and while most will be watching the runways to see the latest trends, our team will be eagerly watching (and hoping) to see more representation and diversity.

Earlier this year, Vogue Business published a study on size-inclusivity at AW24, classifying looks as straight size (0-4), mid-size (6-12) and plus size (14+). Their study showed that a dismal 0.8% of looks at New York Fashion Week were plus size.

We all know that fashion is not representative, but a lack of up-to-date credible data has meant it’s been hard to say exactly how unrepresentative it is. That’s why we decided to share ours.

Since launching in 2020, Mys Tyler has been downloaded by over 600,000 women across the globe who enter their body data so we can match them with like-bodied fashion creators. We realized our data could plug this gap and highlight the need for better representation in the fashion industry. We’ve just launched Mys Tyler Insights: US Edition with data from over 42,000 American women aged 18+.

the Average American Woman is plus size
Image vis MYS Tyler

Our data suggests that the majority of American women (54.4%) are considered plus size, when compared to the 0.8% of plus size looks at fashion week, this disparity is clearly evident (and shocking).

Many women “feel” underrepresented, and now we hope they can feel validated, with data to back up their personal experiences.

Other insights from our data suggest:

  • The average American woman wears a size 14 and is ‘plus size’
  • The most common dress size in America is size 16
  • The average American woman has a height of (5’4″)
  • The average cup size worn by American women is a D
  • And most American women (58.3%) wear a D cup or larger

Given the substantial market for plus size, it’s disappointing that the feedback we consistently hear from our community is that the category often feels like an after-thought. Poor (or boring) design, fit issues, lack of availability in brick and mortar (even when brands stock extended sizing, they frequently only carry them online), and an absence of representation across diverse bodies.

Even if there is a “token” plus size model, they are often tall, hourglass, young and with no visible cellulite which again is not representative of most bodies.

There’s been a number of brands recently that have reduced their size range noting a lack of demand, but knowing there is a market, we are pointing the finger back at them – did they create a quality product, and let their target audience know they stocked their size? Did they make it easy (and less risky) for customers to give them a try?

We know that many brands aren’t doing a great job, and we want to offer some advice.

What Brands can be Doing Better to Serve the Average American Woman Who Is Plus Size:

the Average American Woman via MYS Tyler
Image via Gregory Beltre for Mys Tyler
  • Invest in research and design to create quality fit that is also on trend
  • Show clothing on a diversity of bodies – the more diversity the easier it is for users to know if the brand is relevant, and imagine the clothes on their bodies
  • Stock their full range of sizing in-store if they have physical locations, allow women the chance to try things on without the risk of online shipping and returns
  • Engage with plus size creators who can spread the word that you cater to them, especially if they’re new to the market

You don’t have to be a fashion lover, for fashion to be relevant in your life. We all have to get dressed every day, and we all feel better when we like our outfit. If you can’t see fashion on a body like your own (height, size, shape, coloring and age), it can be challenging to know if an item is going to fit you, and that’s IF it even comes in your size!

Underrepresentation in the fashion industry not only has a negative impact on how women feel about their bodies, but it directly translates to an inefficient shopping experience, poor fit, and high return rates – negatively impacting profits, and environmental sustainability.

We hope this data gives brands the evidence to properly support and invest in the average American woman of all shapes and sizes.

Sarah Neill is the Founder and CEO of Mys Tyler, the social-commerce app set to solve the $1 trillion “fit” problem by creating a more empowering and personalised shopping experience for all women.

Brittney Spencer On Owning Her Style, Music, And The Spotlight https://thecurvyfashionista.com/brittney-spencer-on-owning-the-spotlight/ https://thecurvyfashionista.com/brittney-spencer-on-owning-the-spotlight/#respond Mon, 02 Sep 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://thecurvyfashionista.com/?p=144316 Country singer Brittney Spencer is owning her moment. Country music has deep roots but has long faced criticism for its lack of diversity. Black artists, in particular, have found it challenging to break into the genre. Despite country music’s roots in Black culture, the industry has long been dominated by white artists. Brittney Spencer isn’t just aware of this—she’s living it. She’s one of the few Black women making waves in the country music world today, following in the footsteps of legends like Charley Pride and Linda Martell but carving out her own path in a space that still has a long way to go in terms of representation.

“Country lyrics really drew me into the genre. I loved that you could make and sing a song about pretty much anything in life. I know the art of storytelling through song isn’t genre-specific and can be found in so many styles of music, but I discovered my own storytelling voice through country music,” Spencer explained.

“Country music has been like an internal vehicle, helping me discover a lot about myself as a writer and musician. To me, that’s what makes country music my home,” she added.

For Brittney, being a plus size Black woman in the country music industry adds another layer to the challenge. It’s no secret that the music business can be superficial, and country music is no exception. But instead of conforming to industry pressures, Brittney has embraced who she is—both on and off the stage. She’s not just breaking barriers with her voice; she’s also doing it with her style.

The “Bigger Than The Song” singer is becoming a standout in the country music scene. Since stepping onto the scene in 2013, Brittney’s powerful voice and undeniable talent have steadily gained her recognition, most recently with superstar Beyoncé. Spencer recently sat down with us to dish on all things fashion, music, and taking up space in the industry.

Fashion is another area where Brittney shines. She’s got a style that’s as bold as her voice—think different denims, suede, textures, rhinestones, and a whole lot of confidence.

“I love texture-denim, suede, velvet, leather and corduroy. I love 70s fashion. I love looking at photos of artists in the 70s and seeing many of them dress similarly across genres,” Spencer passionately stated. “Dolly, Chaka, Fleetwood Mac, Sly and the Family Stone wore bell bottoms, bellbottom jumpsuits, flared jeans and shirts, textures, and lots of sewn-in feathers.”

However, Spencer understands how hard it is to achieve “really good plus size fashion.” The “Sober & Skinny” singer pointed out that retailers still drop the ball regarding quality clothing for bigger bodies, even if they offer plus sizes.

“If I want high fashion, I have to search a lot deeper to find things in my size or just get something custom-made. Honestly, it’s demotivating,” she said.

She has vowed to continue to call out fashion retailers for the lack of plus size fashion because everyone deserves to feel good and have cute clothing. Often, Spencer would love to rock a comfortable pair of sweatpants, but she admitted that she loves fashion too much. Luckily, Spencer has found some go-to plus size brands she loves, like Good American, Karen Millen, Levi’s, Dolce Vita (for her wide calf boots), Anthropologie, and more.

When it comes to her music, Spencer is as real as it gets. Her sound is soulful and authentic, and the singer plans on staying true to herself.

“I try to be real about myself, what I want, and what I hope to achieve. I often think about the people I’m making music for and let that guide me,” Spencer said.

Spencer put those feelings into her debut album, “My Stupid Life,” which reflects her personal journey filled with highs, lows, and everything in between.

“This album taught me to be more honest about how I feel and the experiences I’ve had. As it relates to body image, I Iooked the way I wanted to – I used full-body photos on the cover and in lots of the promo shots. I don’t really have an agenda, just more like a goal to be, feel, and look as dope as I want to,” Spencer shared.

And it was her authenticity that got her noticed by Beyoncé. Her life changed overnight when the “Alien Superstar” singer tapped Spencer’s shoulder for her country album, “Cowboy Carter.” The collaboration was a dream come true and a testament to Spencer’s hard work.

Spencer revealed this year’s album release, working with Beyoncé, and performing at Stagecoach- were all “a dream come true.”

Brittney Spencer is owning her moment, both in music and fashion. She’s a reminder that country music is for everyone—and that the spotlight shines brightest on those who are true to themselves.

A Market Vendor Meet Cute at Ethical Bodies x The Goodish

Ethical Bodies and The Goodish both started their journeys as vendors at local markets, passionately selling their second hand fashion pieces. Ethical Bodies, founded by Maura Hampton (She/Her) and Tricia Stoecklin (She/Her), began as a pop-up shop bringing plus size vintage and modern resale clothing to various markets. Maura recalls, “I love to support local and I remember going to all these wonderful markets, but I was only ever able to buy accessories.” Feeling left out inspired her to create Ethical Bodies, focusing on sizes XL-4X+ to provide sustainable options for mid-size and plus size consumers.

The Goodish, operated by Erica Hallman (all pronouns) and K Scott (all pronouns), centered their brand around body-inclusive, gender-euphoric, queer fashion and home goods. Through pop-ups and vendor markets, both brands frequently received inquiries about opening a brick-and-mortar store, prompting them to consider a more permanent presence.

“The amount of people who showed up and came out surpassed our wildest dreams. It worked so well between us.”

Through their interactions at markets, the owners formed a strong connection. They shared their stories and together they identified a gaping hole in the market. For a city of this size, there simply were not enough options for the plus size community. We needed an event that supported this community. Their first collaboration was the Big Body Bash, a market celebrating people living in larger bodies and creating a sense of liberation for the community. This event garnered local media coverage and was an overwhelming success. It was the first Exclusively Plus Size Market in St Louis. The event’s success sparked the idea of further collaboration.

In December of 2023, the four co-owners decided to officially join forces. Together, they created Ethical Bodies x The Goodish, seamlessly merging their personal brands and shared goals of creating a space for their community.

The boutique’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in the art, styling, and layout of the showroom. Their focus on offering fashion for plus, queer, masc, and femme nonbinary individuals is so refreshing. By providing sustainable clothing options and reducing waste, they ensure that every BODY has access to fashion-forward, eco-friendly choices.

Here’s an overview of some of the items you’ll find in store at Ethical Bodies x The Goodish:

  • Sizes Large-6x+
  • Vintage Apparel
  • Modern Pre-owned apparel
  • Vintage home furnishings
  • Body Positive Art
  • Accessories
  • Necklace Extenders
  • Gender Neutral Styles
  • Masc Styles
  • Femme Styles
  • Opportunities for consignment

The boutique’s layout and curation support this vision by mixing masc, gender neutral, and femme styles seamlessly. The showroom is designed to guide customers intuitively, allowing them to explore and choose items that resonate with their personal style, free from societal constraints.

As I perused, I felt myself questioning whether I could try some masc leaning styles. It feels like a bit of an experiment in gender fluid shopping that completely removes confirmation bias when drawn to a piece. It was a very new feeling for me, and I cannot wait to see how this experience will evolve my personal wardrobe and preferences.

How you can experience Ethical Bodies x The Goodish

IRL – Visting the St Louis Showroom

We’re all very aware of how few IRL spaces exist for plus size and queer shopping options. For those lucky enough to live in or visit St. Louis, I urge you to add this to your must experience list. The showroom offers a unique, inclusive atmosphere that elevates this to a must-visit destination. Located in the heart of the Gateway to the West, the boutique invites plus, queer, masc, and femme nonbinary folx to experience their welcoming and stylish space in person.

This is not something you need to worry about, when you have made your selections, anyone working will be able to ring you up, and you’ll just need to do 2 transactions if the styles you selected were from both Ethical Bodies and The Goodish. They’ll take care of everything for you and explain that up front.

If you are looking to develop your personal style, both sides of the house offer styling consultations. And did I mention the spacious and ventilated fitting room and cozy sofa? They really thought of everything.

When I heard that the Iconic Tess Holliday was hosting a posing workshop and photo shoot I knew I had to do it. It was just the right time for me, since I was almost finished with my book and I knew I needed to refresh my branding photos.

I am a firm believer of the power of posing and fashion to pull us out of our slump and into a more confident version of ourselves.

Come along with me as I touch on the inspiration, outfits, and the final looks from my confidence inspiring photo shoot with supermodel Tess Holliday.

Preparation (aka Shopping)

For the shoot we needed to select 2 outfits. As a former celebrity, boutique, and wedding stylist, I knew that I needed to find outfits that felt like me, and to have a range of looks to change up pictures just in case I ended up not liking one after.

I knew I wanted to go for more of a dramatic or editorial look and wanted the first look to be ethereal and flowy, and the second to be more form fitting. As far as hair and makeup, I wasn’t sure until after I got my outfits on lock.

The day before the shoot I made the long drive from Phoenix to Los Angeles to stay at the lovely Hotel Proper. I brought some back up options with me, but knew I was in good hands. I scheduled a styling session at the Plus Bus, and also had my eye on a few things from Proud Mary which was conveniently located en route to my appointment.

Here I was, less than 48 hours until my shoot and not a single detail of my outfit had been locked down. Spoiler alert: it all works out.

First Stop to Prepare for my Tess Holliday Posing Class? Proud Mary Fashion

What I Wore to My Confidence Boosting Photoshoot with Tess Holliday- Proud Mary Fashion

I had been  shopping their online sales for years, but it was my first time coming into this hidden gem and walking in felt like a warm hug from a very 90’s living room. Soft girls are not only welcome, but we’re front and center.

I immediately felt like a main character.

From the meticulously curated vintage, to the handmade accessories, to the home decor finds – I was in heaven. And there it was.

What I Wore to My Confidence Boosting Photoshoot with Tess Holliday-

Pink…. giant buttons… stripes… I knew it had to be included in my shoot. This piece was part of the Proud Mary house label designed by founder Jessica and it was perfect. I snagged several other pieces for my closet, gave Jessica a big hug, and headed down the street to my next stop.

Next Stop: The Plus Bus

When I arrived at the beautiful Plus Bus Boutique’s Highland Park showroom I was welcomed in and introduced to my stylist. I had sent them a little information in preparation for my shoot and Cassia led me to the fitting room where she had pulled items she thought would fit my theme. I’ll just say this: She understood the assignment.

Now as a former stylist, with clients such as Brooke Hogan, Kate Hudson, and the late Dr. Donda West I knew how to make a person feel seen… but this was the first time in my entire life that I had allowed myself to be styled. This was the first time in my life that I was shopping IRL with so many luxury options that just fit and felt like it was made for me.

What I Wore to My Confidence Boosting Photoshoot with Tess Holliday-

One of the first dresses Cassia had picked for me was this deep pink slip dress by Baacal. I put it on and was brought to tears. It just felt so me. It would also pair perfectly with my Proud Mary button shirtdress and I had at least one outfit locked down.

After a few more outfits, and again adding some for my closet for later, we were accessorized and ready to go.

As we scoured for a second more ethereal piece I asked if maybe they had something with Selkie vibes that could work. Just then Jen Wilder brought over one that had just come in on trade and hadn’t been processed yet. It was perfect.

My Inspiration Mood Board:

Back at the hotel I was laying out and finalizing earrings and shoes for my looks and checking social media for some inspiration. Tess had messaged me the links to the hair and makeup artists for me to peruse and I came up with a few inspiration shots for the shoot. Here’s the Pinterest board I created!

Look One: Vintage Fever Dream

The Inspiration

I was inspired by Natalie’s pose and the angsty feelings from Kimberley Gordon’s posts. There was real main character energy which was exactly what I was going for.

Look Two: It’s a Movement and a Moment

The Inspiration:

This look was inspired by Barbie and just pink on pink on lavender on pink. When creating this outfit I focused on classic Barbie Maximalism aka Barbiecore. Mixing textures was the best part of this, the deadstock silk of the dress, the light airy button up, and velvet wrapped hoops all told a story.

The Shot:

Look Three: Quiet, Curvy, Confident

The Inspiration:

This look is more toned down, like peeling layers back, and it just feels calm, serene, and sexy. I was inspired by this gorgeous photo I found through the makeup artist of Bree Kish who just slays in a different shade of the same Baacal slipdress.

Confidence Boost here we come:

With the workshop and expert team, I was pretty sure I’d get at least one photo that I liked and I thought that’s what would build my confidence… the final result. Truth be told I felt a boost to my confidence from the second I finally clicked “Book” on the shoot when I saw the limited slots disappearing. I think part of it was that I started seeing myself of worthy of the experience. I’m not a model, but I could do this. For fun, for learning, I was investing in myself.

I felt more confident through each step of the process. Every part of the planning, the playlist I chose for my drive out to Los Angeles. Working on my Pinterest mood board. The body positive shopping experience I had at Proud Mary and the Plus Bus. I had been slowly building up my confidence throughout the process. And the photo shoot experience was a culmination of everything up to that point and I could not imagine a better shoot.

Not only was I pampered from start to finish by Tess and her team, I got to meet other like minded women in a truly uplifting environment. We laughed and shared stories. We sang along to the music. I learned new poses that helped me up my selfie game.

Andrea and Tess

If you have been hiding in the back during family photos or opting out of being photographed, do yourself a favor and plan a photo shoot with just you. I used to try to hide in photos too (and yes, sometimes I still find myself hiding.) Whether you do a packaged photo shoot like I did, or set up your photo timer and do a DIY shoot, there’s nothing like a great photo of you, as you are today, to boost your confidence.

I challenge you to try some of the poses from my shoot to see if any work for you. If you aren’t quite there yet, there’s a great community here at TCF to showcase all kinds of bodies and inspiration. Maybe just start building a mood board with inspiration for one day, just in case.

I hope this feature provides some inspiration for your next DIY or professional shoot. The team that Tess put together for this event was extraordinary. Thank you Amber, Autumn, Jessica, Cassia, Jen, and Julianny for bringing my vision to life!

A special thanks to Tess Holliday for creating this opportunity for me to get in front of the camera. Your posing expertise (and fortitude with a leaf blower) helped me get the best shots and I am forever grateful for your contributions to the plus size community.

Are you looking for music that doesn’t fit into a specific genre? Music that has a message but is written and performed in a beautiful way? Let us introduce you to Griefcat!  Annie Nardolilli and Louisa Hall, the masterminds behind Griefcat, are a in matching outfits who together create music with an unpredictable twist.  They’ve been compared to Flight of the Conchords, Tenacious D, Norwegian duo Ylvis, and Garfunkel and Oates by fans.

Griefcat Album Cover
Griefcat Album Cover

But if you ask Annie to describe their sound, she says “We’re like if Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, and Bo Burnham met up at an Olive Garden and wrote a song while eating unlimited breadsticks. Does that make sense? Probably not.” Annie Nardolilli is a Mormon and former sheriff’s deputy from Arlington, VA. Louisa Hall is a long-time lapsed Catholic and a career tech employee.  From Alexandria, VA and now resides in Reston, VA.

The duo met at a DC-based variety show in 2015 and were the only musicians in a group of comedians performing that night. “Louisa played a song called ‘Barista Boyfriend,’ about a barista she had a crush on, and I played a song called ‘Hot Park Ranger’ about a park ranger I had a crush on,” says Annie.  “We both realized we liked hot people with jobs!”  They felt an immediate kinship.

After continually running into each other in the singer-songwriter scene in DC and admiring each other’s work, they joked backstage at the 9:30 Club in 2018 about how they should form a band together. They scheduled their first rehearsal in 2019, and wrote a song about vaccines and egg rolls, and the rest is history.

Griefcat’s album Late Stage Capitalism includes nine tracks that range from flat out hilarious to unexpectedly thought provoking, each with a unique sound and lyrics to tickle the soul. The musicianship stands out on its own as well. You will hear some unexpected instruments like slide guitar, ukulele, trumpet, trombone, violin, and cello throughout the album. The album explores how unbridled capitalism has invaded every facet of modern life, from workplace politics to interpersonal relationships, and even our most private moments.

They came up with the title in early 2020 when they wrote arguably their most well-known song on the album to date, “Revolution (Poop At Work).” This song catapulted the duo to viral infamy and a strong following with over 25 million organic views of their videos – more than 15 million of those views for that song alone.

Revolution (Poop At Work)” is a song about how even the smallest acts of defiance can be revolutionary. “So much of the 2020s feel like the 1920s all over again – the income inequality is staggering, and the rich are getting richer while others are struggling,” says Louisa.  “Late stage capitalism is at the core of our entire album, but this is the song that most explicitly calls this out. We always tell audiences it’s our most cerebral song, then we dive into a 1.5 minute poop joke.  Life can be crappy, but it’s so much more fun to laugh your way through it!”

Griefcat Album Release
image via brand

Other songs on the album include “I Just Want To Get Inside (Your Bank Account).” This song is an unanticipated, ‘90s-style love song with a hilarious contradiction between two women looking for two different things when it comes to a new relationship.  Are they looking for love or money? It also shines a light on dating culture and how much sensitive personal information we share online every day.

Crytpobro” is a traditional country tune with all the makings of a hit song.  It’s a melodic, catchy, and current, and a breakup song about losing love, in this case to the cult of Cryptocurrency and the church of Elon Musk.

With each live show, Griefcat invites their audience to step inside their world, creating a fun and exciting atmosphere that becomes a universally shared experience.  “We want to take away some of the seriousness of the day and help people remember that though life may be chaotic and nonsensical, it’s still good. Life is hard and it’s okay to laugh at it together,” says Annie.

But the greatest messages they receive are from fans who say their music provides a cathartic experience.  Says Louisa, “We’ve had folks reach out who couldn’t get out of bed due to grief, and they’ve found us, and it brought them enough joy to get out of bed that day.”

Ultimately they want people to enjoy the music, not just because it’s funny, but because it’s good – they want fans to feel it in their souls, to love the lyrics, and to have fun singing along.  People often tell them after a Griefcat show that they haven’t laughed that hard in a long time, and that’s a compliment that inspires Griefcat to keep making music every day.

Not only is Griefcat discussing difficult topics in a light-hearted way, they are also focused on inclusion and supportive of the plus size community. Louisa says, “Something instrumental to me on my journey as a fat person was seeing fat creators thriving in the world – it gave me hope that I could too. Now that we are more in the public eye, I’m grateful to be in a position where I can share that hope and joy with others. Seeing fat people represented, especially as main characters in our own stories, is incredibly powerful, and I’m proud to be one of the many incredible fat creators out there showing that we exist, and we are worthy of the spotlight!”

Annie says, “I would love to one day live in a world where all body types are so normalized they aren’t even a topic of conversation, but until that day I love being a tiny part of the growing landscape of diverse bodies represented in media. No matter how much or how little physical space you take up, the world has infinite room for everything you bring to the table. And if you happen to bring a whoooole lot to the table, might as well share that with as many people as possible right?”

I continue to share that all bodies are beautiful, and the best part of this is being able to share with women who are like me. Growing up, there were not plus size bodies prominently displayed, so it made me feel like something was wrong with me. I want to use my platform as more than a business, but a place where women can feel beautiful, included, and have a sisterhood of women just like them.” Brittany Washington
