Sports Illustrated plus size models deserve all the spotlight!

If you didn’t know, in 2016, runway star Ashley Graham made history as the first voluptuous woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. The show-stopping beauty was featured in a purple-and-yellow bikini on the front of the publication’s celebrated swimsuit issue, which spawned a new age in the body positivity movement.

At the time, Graham spoke to People magazine about what the representation meant not only for her but also for fellow full-figured ladies around the globe. “I thought Sports Illustrated was taking a risk by putting a girl my size in the pages,” the once-rookie told the outlet. “But putting me on the cover? They aren’t just breaking barriers; they are the standard now. This is beyond epic!”

“Girls who are insecure about their bodies, girls who feel ‘fat,’ girls who have cellulite, girls who have stretch marks on their body — those are all the things that I had as a kid, and I never had a woman like me growing up to look at,” she added. “I had my mother, and that’s one thing, but to have somebody who has cellulite, who has things that jiggle, who has back fat and talk about how you can be an overcomer and not let society take you down for all of that… that’s real.”

Sports Illustrated debuted in 1954 and has since served as a leading force in sports media. The news empire was founded by the late journalist Stuart Scheftel. It became widely known for its annual swimwear section, which began in 1964 and featured numerous (mainly fit) female celebrities posing for the spread.

“The moment that I got the cover and saw it for the first time, I knew that my life was going to change forever,” Graham gushed in a YouTube video about the experience. “Big girls are here to stay! You know what I’m saying?”

Ultimately, Graham’s groundbreaking accomplishment catapulted her to global stardom, paving the way and opening the door for other larger-framed queens to make their mark. And today, we are sharing the other Sports Illustrated plus size models who you should know and follow!

Like many sports, ballet is one of those athletic art forms that has lacked diversity and inclusivity since its origination in the fifteenth century. However, today, plus size ballerinas have proven that the talent within the dance industry doesn’t rely on snatched waistlines and flat tummies. Instead, it’s about the importance of bodily expression.

Centuries later, in 2024, full-figured women are now showing the world there isn’t a weight limit to twirling on your toes. Through brilliant routines and roaring audiences, these amazing ladies do it effortlessly — one bow and a standing ovation at a time.

Colleen Conklin (formerly Werner) is a professional dancer and licensed mental health therapist in Nashville, Tennessee. According to a 2017 interview with NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), the self-love advocate began dancing at the tender age of 3. Per Dance Magazine, by the time Conklin hit early-to-mid adolescence, she developed body-image issues and forced herself to diet, which led to a full-blown eating disorder diagnosis at 16.

“Dance can be a great tool for moving through anxiety and depression, but it can also be harmful because it isn’t a space that represents different kinds of bodies,” she told the outlet in 2021. In 2017, Conklin created a hashtag called #BopoBallerina (Body Positive Ballerina) on Instagram, amassing thousands of followers as the online initiative spread like wildfire. She has since cultivated a safe space for those ashamed of not fitting into society’s “conventional” beauty standards.

Texas ballerina Freje Randall rose to prominence in 2020 after having the grand opportunity to perform with Lizzo at that year’s GRAMMY ceremony. Per an interview with Houston Life, she cited that Lizzo’s team loved her so much that they asked if she could fly to California and the rest was history.

Randall (who, at the time, was a student of Joffrey Ballet School in New York) began ballet at a young age, but started training professionally at Fort Bend Academy of Dance and Ballet Forte. “I’ve always felt isolated in classes. Simply because my skin is so much darker than everybody else’s, and my body is completely different,” she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I have curves, and ballet is a very stereotypical form of dance. I knew when I didn’t get into certain companies that I auditioned for, it was because of that.”

Now referring to herself as “Thee Stallion BALLER-ina,” the Delta Sigma Theta member has garnered nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram and over 150,000 on TikTok.

We wouldn’t be your virtual besties if we didn’t drop these plus size fall wardrobe essentials in your life, right? Right!

With the autumn leaves flying in, summer clothes are rolling out. Aside from the pumpkin spice lattes and spooky films, the best thing about this time of year is the fashion. Society has long misconstrued that bigger women aren’t capable of putting that ish on, too. However, before we get into the necessities, here’s a newsflash for the non-believers — we most definitely can!

There wasn’t an episode of UPN’s The Parkers in which Nikki Parker (portrayed by comedienne Mo’Nique) didn’t show up and show out with the lewks. No matter the time of year, from feathered sweaters to trendy dresses, the costume department (clearly) ensured that she was always on point and par—seasonally. Although a fictional character, Parker was a true testament to someone’s style NOT , their size.

Warm up the chilly weather with even hotter couture! These are items every fashionista should have on hand for the fall.

Plus Size Fall Wardrobe Essentials You Need in Your Closet

1. Suede Coats

Faux-Suede Coat
Faux-Suede Coat by LaneBryant.com

As larger girlies, we (sometimes) struggle to find effective gear for the cooler months. The cute jackets we run across are normally too snug-fitted and don’t have the proper material to keep us well-insolated. Because of this issue, investing in a good coat is key. If you’re not a big fan of leather—as it often can make your feet hot, sticky, and just downright uncomfortable—suede is the way to go! They’re stylish and not too heavy. The plush padding on the inside offers the perfect amount of warmth.

2. Wide Width Boots

Ryatt Extra Wide Calf Boots

Let’s face it—boots are IT! But… finding an efficient pair as a voluptuous beauty can be exhausting. More so for the flat-footed baddies with chubby stompers. While aesthetically pleasing for the fellas, especially with a fresh pedi, thicker feet for women pose an issue when shoe searching.

With boots being in season and many of us wanting to get our Mary J. Blige on (if you know, you know), it’s vital to have some wide-width ones on deck. Most of us are already starting our Christmas shopping, and the last thing we need is to get halfway through Target with cramping ankles. Wide-width boots provide enough move-around room, and they’re even better if designed with the necessary support.

3. Plaid Leggings

Crop Leg Sweater Pant

Casual, chic, and convenient! With the pleasant fall temperatures, leggings (or even sweater pants) are a go-to choice for pants. Grabbing them in plaid is even more fun to dress up, especially when grouped with a nice, cozy, floor-length cardigan and some wode calf boots? Jazz up your solid shirt with multi-colored leggings and see how beautifully it completes your the fit. Don’t be afraid to ditch the jeans every once in a while! You won’t regret it.

4. Fedora Hats

Coachella Felt Hat For Women

Sis, stop putting that hat back every time the “chunky” police try to tell you your head is too big for it! Autumn wouldn’t be the same if it didn’t come with a fedora or two, made especially for big head or big hair owners. They’re the ultimate addition to a fall ensemble. Unsure of what to wear it with? Trench coats are always ideal, as they give off a classy, clean completion to the outfit. Fedoras are show-stealers and always good to fall back on, especially if you’re rocking braids or super-long tresses.

5. Leather Skirts

Wrap Front Faux Leather Midi Skirt

Last, but certainly not least, leather skirts are must-haves! While practically worn at any time of the year, they serve the best looks in the fall. Stockings and a heel of choice take them to the next level, appearance-wise. Get creative! Leather isn’t only a go in black. Try different colors with a flashy top. Fancy it up with some accessories, and watch how it comes to life!

Goodbye, summer; hello, autumn! As we prepare to enter the new season, it’s only right that we get our fashion in order, too. In this article, we’re showing you how to style plus size sweaters for fall!

From pumpkin patches and bulky boots to department-store decor and pre-Thanksgiving memes, the second equinox of the year is quickly approaching. It’s about that time to run to the closet and rummage through your clothes for your favorite gear. If you’re like some of us, we’re sure you’ve been (im)patiently waiting to pull out the best burgundy, yellow, or olive green fit for the occasion.

Shopping for fall attire can (sometimes) be a headache. Whether you’re trying to find knit fabrics that aren’t too snug or trendy ensembles that will keep you cute (yet cozy), many of us would rather hire someone to do it for us instead. However, dressing for the cooler months as a heavier person doesn’t always have to be an annoyance. It can actually be fun!

Gone are the days of hiding the belly behind the big, bland coats.

Let’s jazz up your wardrobe with a few tips.

5 Ideas on How to Style Plus Size Sweaters for Fall

Jean Overalls

Jean suspenders definitely give very cutesy, very demure. If you want to channel your inner sexy librarian, this is the perfect look for the fall. Whether you’re headed out to a festival with friends or strolling through the leafy trails of the city with bae, you could never go wrong with one. Wear a sweater of your choice underneath, pair it with some boots for extra pizzazz, and you’re good to go. Simple but sassy.

Statement Necklaces

Hit up your go-to jewelry outlet and ice yourself out… literally! You don’t have to go overboard. Contrary to popular belief, costume pieces can be just as much of an eye-catcher, especially on top of a solid-colored sweater. The bold neck accessory is the ultimate complement to a chilled look. Find some matching earrings, and watch how the beautiful bling makes you stand out in the crowd.

Knit Ruanas

The temperatures are dropping, and ruanas are in again! Throwing in a bright-colored ruana on top of your sweater is the ultimate way to set off your style of the day. Ruanas provide extra warmth and a chic flair to your outfit. Who wouldn’t want a scarf and shawl combined in one?

This additional layer of threads would specifically go well with a turtleneck sweater. Grab one with a plaid or multi-colored design for a little more sass.

Stylish Belts

Belts are a great way to swag up anything from a sweater to a plus size sweater dress! If you’re a voluptuous woman with a lot of hips, going the route of a belt with stretchy material may be your best bet. They not only create a sense of definition to your waistline but fanciness, too.

Investing in a belt with a stylish emblem on the front of it will take a normal piece of clothing to the next level. All you need is a fine pair of pumps now!

Leather Skirts

Who said you couldn’t rock skirts in the fall? Putting leather skirts with sweaters is an underrated fashion vibe. Let’s say the weather isn’t as cold in your area yet, it’s a comfortable balance for pleasant weather. You might be hot… but not literally! Look for some leather boots to finish the look and you’re done. This could be worn anywhere, for any event.

Growing up, terms like “big-boned,” “chubby,” “plump,” and “heavyset” ran rampant within the communities and homes we lived in. If rude aunties weren’t emphasizing the size of our frames at family functions, neighborhood bullies threw around the socially controversial word “fat” to hurt our feelings. However, as terms like “thick” and “curvy” gained popularity, some of us were left to question: Am I plus size?

It is interesting to note that “Plus Size” is a term that originated in the early 1900s, was birthed by Lane Bryant. At its inception, the term was “Misses Plus Sizes.” As the category evolved, so did the term.

In the early 2000s, there was a peak in the phrase “plus size” when the fashion world attempted to include clothing for women of larger body types. Due to insincere diversity missions, brands began to use models with waists that only extended a few centimeters over the industry’s “norm” to represent the plus size standard. Within the blink of an eye, people with slightly broad shoulders or size 10 were pushed forward as plus representations.

However, on the fashion front, more work still lies ahead. Over the years, the industry has evolved from constantly displaying small thigh gaps to a realistic array of pudgy stomachs and wide hips. Unfortunately, many still find themselves perusing the size charts of online boutiques for hours — wishing, wondering, and waiting for someone whose shape resembles theirs to leave an authentic review. Today, that problem remains when adding an extra 2-3X to the end of the item tag.

What Classifies You as Plus Size?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “plus size” is used to “describe someone who is larger than average in size.” Interestingly, the term holds different meanings around the globe.

In this day and age, being plus size isn’t as subjective as it once was. The effects of living life as a plus size woman are validated through the experiences we come up against daily. From shopping difficulties to social discrimination, even those who are mid-size have experiences vastly different from those who are plus size.

To some, a size as small as 8 to 10 could be considered the starting point of plus size, while others stress 12 to 14. Nowadays, companies promote a size 14/16 as the beginning level of plus size. However, the language around this subject grows even murkier as we add in the shape of one’s body with their size. However you classify your size, there still lies the challenge or push back against the “societally acceptable” version of larger women shaped like Coke bottles.

Navigating This World as a Plus Size Person Shouldn’t Have to Be Hard

Here is one thing to note… Plus Size is only a category or classification, NOT a precursor or definition of your worth, value or beauty. But… while sizing does play a huge factor in determining where your categorization may fall, the everyday nuances of maneuvering in society as a bigger person are telling enough.

It’s in the looks of discomfort as we stride through the department stores, taking up space on aisles that aren’t even wide enough, to begin with. It’s in the comedic drawl when we ask for another chair or garment to (better) accommodate our shapes because we “shouldn’t have let ourselves gotten like this anyway.”

It’s even in the charts of the physicians who hurt us more than help us by writing every ailment off as a result of “being overweight.” An overactive thyroid, polycystic ovary syndrome, or even diagnosed mental issues that have developed a deep-rooted trauma bond with food are all real-life obstacles that we often face.

So, the next time we’re frowned upon (or even laughed at) after begging the world to save a seat for us or add an extra stitch to a dress or inch to a bra strap, maybe these individuals should think of all the women suffering in silence from medically induced obesity who’ve only ever wanted was someplace to fit.

Fatphobia is real, and pear shapes (smaller top, bigger bottom) shouldn’t be where inclusivity stops.

Despite the hardships and technicalities regarding one’s weight, we, as plus size women, can (most definitely) wear what we want and wear it well. However, the agony comes with the fight we have to put up to have flattering and attractive pieces to choose from. Such roadblocks often lead to hits to our self-esteem, allowing our insecurities and some of these companies’ failure to expand (and lack of compassion) to make us feel as if we simply just don’t belong.

Or… as if there’s something we need to change to meet their standard and exist comfortably. All along, it’s the world that needs to adjust — not us — and realize that one-size-fits-all doesn’t work for… all. Our desire to add something other than floral fabrics to our wardrobes shouldn’t be an inconvenience but a courtesy. Hiring someone who looks like us and understands the style necessities for us may be an extra bill for their bank account, but it will inflict a much-needed, decades-long change in plus size fashion.

All that aside, if you’re wondering, Am I plus size? Your answer lies in the relief you feel when you don’t have to walk into a retailer and be bombarded with disappointment at the little to no selections available. Your answer lies within the exhale you can take when you encounter someone who remembers that you’re just as much of a human as they are; regardless of the width of your waist, marks stretched across your body, or the amount of Xs behind your clothing size.

YES… plus size male models are (and have always been) in!

If we’re being honest, they’ve been here the whole time, but unfortunately, their market doesn’t get as much recognition as their female counterparts. You may ask, why? Well, in theory, the public scrutiny and ostracization of full-figured bodies have affected women more than men — at least, from a commercial standpoint. Thus, with the rise of the body-positive movement, women were prioritized among the celebration of larger individuals.

However, while it’s true that the increased visibility of bigger ladies was long overdue, it’s essential to spotlight the men making moves and cultivating a lane of their own. The representation of guys on the heavier side is necessary for more reasons than one. Although it’s not talked about enough, men struggle with body image and self-esteem issues as well.

Ans when you factor in that the Big & Tall industry had reached 34 Billion in 2023, we definitely need to show more love to the Big & Tall folks moving the industry forward! So how about getting to know a few of the Big & Tall Models who are bringing it??

Hot & Handsome Plus Size Male Models You Should Follow

Zach Miko

Zach Miko was the first plus size male model to sign with premier modeling agency IMG Models in 2016. The influencer introduced the company’s ‘Brawn’ division, a sector specifically tailored for big and tall men. From commanding the catwalk to taking over the timelines, Miko hasn’t ceased in his mission to strip away society’s fatphobia.

“I didn’t know I was allowed to have a positive self-image, period. I was never told it was OK to look like me, he told Yahoo! in a 2023 interview. “I wanted to be something that young guys could look [up] to — just someone to tell them that they’re doing OK, that they are OK. And that no matter the size or the shape of their body, they’re still a valid human being.

With over 200,000 followers (collectively) on Instagram and Facebook, Miko has already made an impact. Aside from modeling, he has his own clothing line  (in collaboration with plus size men’s retailer KingSize) called Meekos.

According to a sit-down with Dia & Co, Miko fell into the field through acting. Some of his earlier work includes an appearance in the Jennifer Lopez-led series Shades of Blue, along with ads for Allstate, Progressive, ESPN, and Target.

Tevin “Milo” Evans

Tevin “Milo” Evans is a stylist, model, and all-around creative raised in Brooklyn, New York. With a decade of experience in wardrobe, it wasn’t until 2017 that he was approached by digital publication Underdog Men to model for them, which “snowballed” his career.

Evans has landed features in GQ France, Vogue, Lampoon Magazine, A Magazine Curated By, The Portrait Project, and Native Son, among others. Additionally, he is the host of his own podcast, Broke & Privileged.

Without a doubt, Evans has been making room in the fashion industry beyond societal norms or superficial beauty standards — and we’re here for it!

Alex Frankel is notable for being Lululemon’s first big and tall model. Currently signed to Wilhelmina Models, Frankel runs his own body acceptance platform called Hot Fat Guy Club, a digital space that advocates for the plus size community as a whole.

When speaking with theCurvyMagazine in 2018, Frankel noted that he experienced alienation because of his size as a child. “It wasn’t really the abuse. It was the way I was looked at, treated, or ignored. I was just the sweaty guy with man boobs. I was always teased because of my weight and my looks.”

Frankel now has over 100,000 followers on TikTok, and all eyes are certainly on him. But this time… in a good way.

How could there not be any reasons why we love Da’Vine Joy Randolph?

You may have been introduced to her through the 2012 Broadway production “Ghost” when she portrayed the Tony-nominated psychic Oda Mae Brown. Perhaps it was her 2019 breakout role in the Eddie Murphy-led film “Dolemite Is My Name” as Lady Reed or 2020’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” as Roslyn. Maybe it was even Hulu’s comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” as Donna Williams or last year’s blockbuster “The Holdovers” as grieving cafeteria manager Mary Lamb.

As a plus size woman of color, Randolph’s road to success hasn’t been the easiest. Despite the barriers, she continues to boldly beat the odds in an industry that often tries to quiet big, marginalized individuals. The 38-year-old star brought us all to our feet with a standing ovation after winning “Best Supporting Actress” for “The Holdovers” effort at the 2024 Oscars.

“For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different. And, now, I realize… I just need to be myself,” the Philadelphia native gushed in her tearful acceptance speech. “I thank you for seeing me. Ron Van Lieu, I thank you! When I was the only Black girl in that class, when you saw me, and you told me I was enough! And when I told you, ‘I don’t see myself,’ you said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to forge our own path. You’re going to lay a trail for yourself.'”

These are the top things we adore about “The Lost City” phenomenon.

Sis is well-educated and degreed!

Randolph spent most of her younger years preparing for the center stage. From attending the Interlochen Center Arts Camp to studying classical vocal performance and opera (later musical theatre) at Temple University, she knew she was destined for worldwide acclaim. Following her time at Temple, Randolph went to the Yale School of Drama and graduated with her master’s degree in 2011. Additionally, she even studied Shakespeare at the University of Oxford.

She never misses in the style department.

Randolph has yet to back down from an opportunity to show up and show out YET. Her fashion sense is immaculate, and every look is on point! If you didn’t know, she has an exclusive glam team of around nine people who are responsible for her award-winning ensembles.

In an interview with Variety, she told the outlet that she likes to have fun with her style, and clothing is a way of self-expression for her as well. Randolph shared, “You know why I love clothes so much? Because it’s connected to one’s personality and sense of self. You don’t have to be as obsessive about it as I am, but I think it’s a good practice of self-love, too.”

Her personal life is pretty private.

What she doesn’t show, you won’t know! And that’s certainly an admirable trait about Randolph! Whereas we live in an age where social media is the new diary, the Pennsylvanian hasn’t offered much about Da’Vine behind the scenes. As far as we know, she’s serious about her craft, likes to step on a few necks with her fashion choices, and is good at winning awards. That’s it… for now.

When it comes to boos or babies, it appears that Randolph is in her single season, but we could be wrong. The Hollywood beauty isn’t that active on the internet either, which is understandable because she stays BOOKED and BUSY!

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a multi-talented woman.

As we know, Randolph is a performer of all trades. Before she’d gotten bitten by the acting bug, singing was her first love. When on stage accepting her Academy Award, Randolph confessed that her mother had given her the push she needed to see beyond that.

“God is so good. You know, I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer,” she recounted to the audience. “My mother said to me, ‘Go across that street, to that theater department. There’s something for you there.’ And I thank my mother for doing that!”

Aside from tearing down the Broadway stage, Randolph lent her powerhouse voice to “The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show’s” official soundtrack in 2015. Clearly, she’s true to this — not new to this!

Despite her many accolades, she remains humble.

Randolph has won an Academy Award, AAFCA Award, Astra Film Award, Black Reel Award(s), British Academy Film Award, and Golden Globe Award, among others. But… although her work has earned her some important accomplishments, the passionate creative prides herself on keeping her humility.

“There’s a trophy in my house now, but I’m not different. You can’t come from Philadelphia and be changed; they won’t let you. This will be who I am. The roles will get better; the money will improve, the lines will get better,” she explained to Variety after her Oscar win. “I hope to make a legacy and leave an imprint with this career. I hope my work will matter and it will be something that people of all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, and genders can connect to. But me, and the soul of me, won’t change.”

Are you looking for short and plus size clothing?

Despite what it may look like, every full-figured woman isn’t a stallion like Tabria Majors or early-2000s Toccara Jones. Each comes in different shapes, sizes… and heights, making the shopping experience differ from one to the other.

While we hold the tall-and-chunky near and dear to our hearts, in this article, we’re showcasing plus size clothing for those who may be more of a Tess Holliday, who reportedly stands around 5’5″.

If you’re a beauty of shorter stature, finding fashions that aren’t falling to the floor or failing to properly accentuate your figure can be tough. In an ideal world, dresses wouldn’t be tailored, and rolling up your pants or tying your shirt should only be a choice — not a requirement. But, alas, we all need a few tips on how to navigate this wide world of shopping and we are here to help!

We’ve come across these must-have items that will be the perfect fit for your stubby frame. Keep reading for these gems!

How to Know If Your Closet Isn’t Short and Plus Size Clothing Friendly

Also known as ‘Petite Plus Size,’ short and plus size clothing is mainly a term for heavier women under 5’4″, whose torso, arms, and legs are of shorter height/length. The misconception is that it refers to slender individuals, but it has nothing to do with your actual weight.

If you’re still sorting out how to dress for your body type, you won’t always notice your current rack isn’t flattering for your physical makeup. Sometimes, we get so caught up in thinking, “There aren’t any clothes for me out there.” When, really, there is — we just aren’t looking at the right places in the right section.

Not being familiar with your style identity can make it even more discouraging, but that’s what trial and error is for! And dressing rooms. Granted, whereas online shopping has become the phenomenon of the decade, in-store buys are still very much happening. Take your time to sift through them, and try on a few pieces. Or, if you are only shopping in virtual spaces, take advantage of the 30-day return policy… if needed, of course.

These are ways to tell if you’re short and plus size and need to find a wardrobe that better accommodates you:

  • You find that there’s a drape in your clothing, and it isn’t form-fitting.
  • You trip over pants and/or dress fabric as you walk.
  • Your clothing is usually loose around the neck area.
  • You have more room than usual despite getting your correct size.
  • Nothing seems to complement your curves… at all.
  • Outfits that are supposed to be short appear long when you wear them.

Things to Look for When Shopping for Short and Plus Size Clothing

The more comfortable you become with the fact that all plus size bodies aren’t the same (and that’s OK), the easier your search for cute ensembles will be. Trust us. If one store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, there’s always another that will. Here’s a little advice on what to check for when coming up with these treasures for yourself:

  • The type of material the item is made of.
  • How much it stretches around your waist and the amount of wiggle room it offers.
  • How long it is when measured against your body.
  • If the sleeves fit correctly or slide from your shoulder/arm upon wearing.
  • Whether it’s more baggy in some areas than others.

Here are some of our favorite short and plus size finds to add to your closet today.

Who is Jane Dipika Garrett? Well, the 23-year-old crushed a lot of barriers and body-image standards when she became Miss Universe Nepal 2023, making history as the first plus size contestant to compete in the international pageant when she placed in the Top 20.

Garrett’s semi-final victory led her to the forefront of most Miss Universe conversations, with many raving and even ranting about her revolutionary walk. However, while her celebratory sash may have been a debate piece for others, it marked an internal accomplishment for the once-aspiring participant.

Garrett achieved a longtime goal that impacted the world and the adolescent Jane, who fawned over the idea of gaining a spot on the glamorous runway.

Let’s get to know more about the Gen Z-er below.

Who Is Jane Dipika Garrett? How Her Miss Universe Journey Began

Born in the United States and raised in Nepal, Garrett’s grand entrance came in October 2000 to a Nepali mother and an American father. According to reports, her father is from Pennsylvania, but when she was 10, the family packed up from the States and relocated to her mother’s homeland, Nepal.

In a personal essay published in Business Insider, Garrett recalled discovering the Miss Universe pageant in 2012, when she watched model/actress Olivia Culpo take home the winning title. If you didn’t know, Miss Universe is a prestigious beauty organization where potential queens from different countries battle for the legendary crown. Founded by clothing manufacturer Pacific Knitting Mills, the global contest officially commenced in 1952.

“I was like, ‘I want to be on that stage. I’d love to do that,'” Garrett wrote of Culpo’s triumph. “That moment really, really inspired me.”

Unfortunately, she soon lost sight of that desire due to mental health issues, and at the tender age of 16, Garrett experienced a bout with self-harm. “I dealt with a lot of bullying, depression, and anxiety as a child. For a while, that dream just kind of faded into the background,” she continued.

Garrett starved herself until she was eventually diagnosed with anorexia. Additionally, she suffered a hormone imbalance but didn’t find out until later in life that she had PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and Borderline Personality Disorder after gaining 30 pounds.

“I always had irregular periods, mood swings, depression, a lot of body hair, and I would gain weight very easily,” Garrett explained. “It made me feel insecure about myself. I would compare myself to other girls and feel like I wasn’t skinny enough.”

For the rising star, the Miss Universe pageant was a Godsend, as she recounted being on the verge of ending her life before signing up for the competition. She added, “I didn’t think I would win [Miss Universe Nepal], I just joined to gain experience and confidence. I embraced myself, and I was there for a purpose–to represent real-size beauty.”

It’s safe to say… Garrett did just that.

“Top 20 baby! I’m grateful to all my fans and people who supported me. I gave my best, and that’s what matters!” she gushed in an Instagram post about her time with the MU team. “I’m so proud to be representing real-size beauty pageants. So proud of the new Miss Universe [Sheynnis Palacios] and will forever cherish this season of my life that was life-changing!”

What Is Jane Dipika Garrett Doing Now?

Following her recognition as Miss Universe Nepal 2023, Garrett has continued growing her body positivity presence online. With over 300,000 followers on Instagram, 43,000 supporters on Facebook, and an account with 250,000+ on TikTok, the young lady’s lifestyle content brand is thriving!

Currently, Jane Dipika Garrett also runs her YouTube channel, where she records vlogs of her day-to-day and motivational videos for her subscribers. Aside from content creation, she’s the co-founder of JYNXX Restro and Bar in Kathmandu, Nepal and Undaunted Wears and a nurse. In April, she was announced as one of the judges for Miss P&I India 2024.

Despite the negativity, Garrett prides herself on overcoming stereotypes and uses her platform to spread awareness about women’s health and esteem-building.

“What about being fit? No one is speaking about health. Being overweight impacts health tremendously,” a commenter rudely dropped under one of her Instagram photos. “Let’s not normalize habits that over time will greatly lower the quality of our lives.”

But… the love definitely has outshined the hate. One of Garrett’s admirers bragged under the same image, “I love you, and thank you for representing plus size girls for us. Now I need my own crown, too.”

It’s great to see that this gorgeous woman’s wishes are still coming true.

Drop your congratulations on Garrett’s success below!

With Sara Milliken’s recent National American Miss Alabama crown and Jane Dipika Garrett’s Miss Universe Nepal 2023 milestone, many have posed the question… are there plus size beauty pageants?

While organizations have since broadened their inclusiveness, we’ve long known competitors to have a stereotypical look for the stage. Generally, in the earlier days of the pageant world, girls/women with slender statures were the holy grail. The associations heavily mirrored the mainstream modeling industry, with a hyper-focus on picture-perfect bodies and the pretty privilege that comes along with it.

While race and sexual identity discrimination have often been a topic in the diversity conversation concerning pageants, weight has notoriously spearheaded these discussions. Truthfully, socially classified “obese” individuals still aren’t a part of modern-day beauty standards.

So, when a full-figured queen is seen strutting in front of the judges, even today, it’s controversial for many in the media. However, honoring the female aura and appearance shouldn’t stop at a certain number on the scale, nor should the embracement of larger people be deemed “promoting obesity.”

These days, voluptuous contestants have a lane crafted specifically for them that prioritizes confidence and courage for all. So, instead of waiting for a seat at the table, there are plus size beauty pageants that celebrate the beauty of our bodies and communities.

Plus Size Beauty Pageants? A List of Today’s Most Prominent Organizations

The answer to that question is YES! Gone are the days when our fluffy sisters were pushed to the background. Now, they’re on the runway, too! We’ve named some of the leading plus size beauty pageants below.

  • Miss Plus America– “Miss Plus America is “devoted to celebrating the essence of the full-figured teen and woman (sizes 12 or greater).””
  • Miss Voluptuous Pageants– “We want more than just a plus-sized model in a crown. We are looking for women who genuinely want to make a difference, and have what it takes to be a true role model in their communities, embracing the etiquettes and attributes of a worthy titleholder.”
  • National Miss Curvy
  • Big Beautiful Women Pageant International– “An outstanding talent competition for plus size women. We’ve been expanding since it’s start up in “1999”. The BBWP has gained national attention and progressively reached its’ international status. Our winners have appeared on national TV shows, radio programs, shown up in news papers and graced the cover of quite a few magazines.”
  • Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A.
  • Miss Plus World Pageant– “The Miss Plus World / Ms. Plus Intercontinental  Pageant is dedicated to promoting, elevating and celebrating the accomplishments and humanitarian services of women from across the nations. It is our goal to build a sisterhood of confident and influential women who share their cultures with each other and the world as they promote education, peace, wellness and worldwide appreciation of diversity.”
  • Mrs. Curve’ Globe Pageant– “The Mrs. Curve’ Globe ® pageant is the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world for women sizes 12+.”

What is Miss Plus America & How Do I Sign Up for It?

Founded by Melissa Stamper in Monroe, Louisiana, the iconic Miss Plus America commenced in 2002. Stamper created the pageant after noticing the lack of those who looked like her throughout her own competition run, forcing her to carve a space exclusive to heavier participants.

By 2014, the brand welcomed a new owner, Marcella Meyer. The baton has since been passed to its current CEO, Meahgan Dickerson, Esq., who previously retrieved the Miss Plus America title in 2017.

According to its mission, Miss Plus America is “devoted to celebrating the essence of the full-figured teen and woman (sizes 12 or greater).” The pageant is notable for its no-restriction age and weight policies as it offers five divisions: Teen (13-17), Miss, unmarried (18-29), Ms., married or unmarried (30+), Mrs., married (20+), Ultimate woman, married or unmarried (50+).

“For decades, little girls have dreamt of wearing a crown. But for many, this dream had no potential of being realized because the size of the one that reached for it was larger than the rules allowed,” Miss Plus America’s website reads. “But now, all of that has changed.”

To be eligible to join, you must be a size 12 or higher, assigned female at birth, and a citizen of the United States. Preliminary rules and regulations + the sign-up application can be found here.

Plus Size Beauty Pageant Winners You Should Know

You can’t think of plus size pageantry without Chenese Lewis and Debbie Shannon, two pioneers in the game we could never forget.

Chenese Lewis

According to Forbes, Lewis’ 20-year+ career dates back to 2000. The Hell Date actress confidently made history as the inaugural Miss Plus America winner in 2003, and from there, Lewis’ name skyrocketed. From starting the first podcast for plus size women, The Chenese Lewis Show, in 2008 to hosting The Curvy Fashonista’s TCFStyle Expo for five consecutive years, the Chenese Lewis Productions CEO quickly is a trailblazer in fashion and entertainment as a whole.

“I created opportunities for myself when others weren’t,” an award-winning Lewis told Forbes. “I took the time out to learn the industry standards and I became extremely conscious of always presenting myself in the most professional way possible so I could compete with people that had more resources than me.”

Debbie Shannon, too, is a heralded advocate and waymaker for self-image who received her Miss Plus America flowers in 2004 and has been gracefully served as a Plus America Lifetime Queen. To this day, her work within the pageant system goes unnoticed.

As a creative director and life coach, Shannon is a key member in the body positivity community and effortlessly pulled her own seat up to the table in a business that once tried to take up the table for thicker influencers.

Plus size beauty pageants are not just a celebration of diverse beauty but a powerful catalyst for change in the fashion industry and beyond. By providing a platform for individuals of all shapes and sizes to shine, these pageants challenge traditional beauty standards and foster a more inclusive definition of attractiveness.

The impact is profound, as they empower participants to embrace their unique selves while inspiring others to do the same. Furthermore, plus size beauty pageants open doors to opportunities previously unavailable, offering visibility, confidence, and career advancements in fashion and media. As we continue to champion diversity, plus size pageants play a crucial role in redefining beauty norms and creating a more equitable industry for everyone.
