With Breast Cancer Awareness Month here, I wanted to chat about something super important that doesn’t get nearly enough attention—the process of finding inclusive mastectomy bras and prostheses.

Years ago, I had my first bra fitting at Nordstrom in Minneapolis, and I remember they couldn’t find a bra that fit me.

The fitter then asked, “Have you ever tried Anita or Amoena?” I hadn’t even heard of those brands—well, they are mastectomy bras.

But these bras weren’t even displayed; they were hidden in the back room. She said they didn’t want to offend anyone or make them uncomfortable. They weren’t discussed, and I remember thinking, “Why are we worried about offending people? We need to make this a positive experience and not intimidating for these women.”

So, for years, the search for comfortable and supportive post-mastectomy wear has felt like a treasure hunt.

Fortunately, times have changed over the last twenty years, and we now have sizes for all body types. It’s been great to see the inclusivity of prosthesis colors; they come in all shades and sizes.

Supporting breast cancer survivors has always been close to my heart, and I’ve seen firsthand just how much difference the right bra can make after watching close friends and my sister on their journey to healing after breast cancer.

With that said, let’s talk about how we can make sure every woman has access to what she needs to feel good in her own skin after surgery.

The Evolution  of  Mastectomy Bras

Brands like Anita, Amoena, and Royce, just to name a few, offer extended sizes, making it much easier for plus size women to find bras that fit, feel comfortable, and look good.

Elizabeth Cluff from Impact One Breast Cancer Foundation was telling me about this shift. She’s worked closely with breast cancer survivors, including many plus-size women, and she’s seen firsthand how much better things have gotten.

She said, “We’ve seen women trying to make do with ill-fitting bras that don’t offer the comfort or security they need.” Of course, there are still some challenges, especially when it comes to accessibility.

As Elizabeth pointed out, “Brands like Anita and Amoena are great, and newer companies focus on comfort, especially with how sensitive skin is post-surgery. But access is still a challenge. In metro areas, you might find more suitable places and  wider options, but in rural areas, women might only have a dollar store nearby and no idea where to find these products.”

Overall, it’s great to see how far things have come, even if there’s still some work to be done.

Why Inclusivity in Post-Mastectomy Wear Matters

Inclusivity is about so much more than just offering bigger sizes. It’s about truly understanding and addressing the unique needs of women during their recovery.

Elizabeth highlights another common issue: “For instance, I spoke with a woman preparing for reconstruction who realized she had nothing to come home to. So we focused on packing her recovery items, ensuring we have her size, like a 2X tank top.”

These real-life stories emphasize the importance of ensuring women have the right products waiting for them as they begin their recovery journey.

If you’re a plus size woman on the hunt for the perfect mastectomy bras, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Adjustable Straps: These are a total game-changer! They help you get the perfect fit, especially as your body changes post-surgery.
  • Wider Bands: A wider band offers extra support and spreads the weight, making you more comfortable throughout the day.
  • Soft Materials: Look for bras made from soft, breathable fabrics that won’t irritate your skin—because comfort is key!
  • Wireless Bras: Underwires in bras can dig into the skin, causing discomfort post-surgery. Ensure bras are wire-free to support your healing body.

Need Support with Breast Cancer Resources or Want to Get Involved?

If you’re struggling to find the right fit, reach out to organizations like Impact One Breast Cancer Foundation. Elizabeth mentioned, “We’ve made strides in educating women about recovery wear, but it’s still tough outside major cities. That’s where Impact One comes in, offering immediate support and resources.”

For nationwide support, I recommend services like the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Here, you can discover numerous breast cancer support groups.

They can guide you to the products that will help you feel more comfortable and confident.

You can get involved this October by recycling gently used bras or new and unused mastectomy bras/post-surgical bras and prostheses. It’s a small act that can make a huge difference, giving women the resources they need to feel comfortable and confident.

Making Healing and Recovery Inclusive for Everyone

Inclusivity in mastectomy bras and prostheses isn’t just about having more sizes; it’s really about making sure every woman has what she needs to feel supported during her recovery.

As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s important to think about how we can make this journey more inclusive. Every woman, no matter her size, or background, deserves to feel comfortable and confident in her own skin.

So, if you’re able to recycle a bra and essential resources for survivors or just help spread the word, it can truly make a difference for plus size breast cancer survivors.

Every woman deserves to feel whole again.

Let’s finally clear up the mystery of sister sizing. I’ve heard it all before: “It’s confusing,” “It doesn’t work for me,” “I don’t get it.” And honestly, I used to feel the same way.

My first introduction to sister sizing was 15 years ago, thanks to a blog by Tomima at HerRoom. At first, I found it confusing and hard to wrap my head around. But as I gained more experience with bra fitting, sister sizing became my go-to tool for helping women find the perfect fit.

Let’s be real—bra shopping ranks right up there with going to the dental hygienist. You know it’s necessary and appreciate the benefits, but it’s not fun.

How often have you searched for your size in a big-box store only to find it’s unavailable or on special order? Especially if your cup size is G and up or on the other end, an A or B.

As the CEO of The Bra Recyclers for over 15 years – I’ve seen it all. We support women in need of all sizes, and finding a bra that fits is always easier said than done.

I’ve been through the wringer enough to pick up essential tips and tricks, including what I call the “tic-tac-toe” method for decoding sister sizes.

But first…

When is it Time to Change Your Bra Size?

Sooner or later, we all reach a point where we want to get rid of that annoying bra because it’s so uncomfortable or realize it’s simply not providing the support we need.

If you’re unsure whether it’s time to change your bra size, here are some signs:

  • The straps are digging into the shoulders or falling off.
  • The band is riding up or feeling too tight.
  • The band is too loose, even on the tightest setting.
  • Gaps or gaping occur, or cups overflow.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, and fluctuations in weight are all important factors to consider when determining if you’re wearing the right size bra.

Decoding Sister Sizing: Elaine’s Practical Guide

When considering sister sizes, think of it as a way to expand your options when shopping for bras. Sister sizing has been beneficial when looking for plus size bras, allowing for a wider range of choices for myself and the women I help fit.

In simple terms, sister sizing is about matching the correct band size with your cup volume/size.

We’ve all been there: the bra doesn’t fit quite right, whether the cups are too big or too small, or the band feels too tight or loose.

A common mistake is assuming you can simply go up or down a band size and keep the same cup size, but that’s not quite how it works.

Cup sizes are about proportion, as you can see from the chart below—a C cup in one band size is not the same as a C cup in another band size.

AD 4nXdRBj0SXULMXJaixO3il3wS ziudXSYlSaO0N Cjji7w jsuU9U5SYFuUbHDSxIqEfXiC1NMlpiNQl5q mfbryPTjzwV2W
© The Bra Recyclers

Think of bra sizing like a game of tic-tac-toe—you need to adjust both the band and cup size to get the perfect fit. Take a look at our chart below for help.

© The Bra RecyclersAD 4nXcFcns U3 xSqNYZVTZREJQuQQusSrvEcTOjyT0GrZTB 4wzK65 hxosIjEWm29AyyBNfnArD vPf7FT80WuTl78lEWdD4GqGY2wi7XAZoXA6mIA8

For example, if you’re wearing a 40D and know the D cup fits you, here’s how to find your sister size:

  • If the band feels loose, go down a size. For a 40D, your sister size would be 38DD/E. The rule is that when you go down a band size, you go up a cup size. The cup volume stays the same; you’re adjusting the band supporting it.
  • If the band feels tight, go up a size. In sister sizing, a 40D would become 42C.

It might still seem a bit confusing, but sister sizing can really help when shopping for bras. Since different styles and brands fit differently, I always recommend trying on a few sizes to find what works best—because not all bras are equal in size.

A Tale of Two Sisters (and One Perfect Fit!)

Let me share a story about how sister sizing came to the rescue for my real sister. I went bra shopping with my sister, who wears a 40B—a tricky size because many stores don’t carry B cups in plus sizes.

After several attempts, we finally visited a local lingerie boutique, Belle Lacet, where the fitter was well-versed in sister sizing.

Thanks to her expertise, we found a bra my sister loved in a size 38C—one band size smaller and one cup size larger than her usual 40B.

The cup was a perfect fit, but the band felt a little too tight. Since a 42A wasn’t an option, we used bra extenders to make the band more comfortable, ensuring the cup size fit her just right.

My sister’s experience with sister sizing was a huge relief after we’d struggled to find the right bra for so long.

Tips and Tricks for the Right Fit

Example: this lady might want to consider a wider band, as the current fit around her back creates an uncomfortable bulge.

I get that some folks are still skeptical about sister sizing, but it can be a handy guideline when you’re out bra shopping. As I’ve mentioned, knowing your bra size is the most important thing.

You can do a DIY bra fitting at home or visit a local lingerie boutique for a professional fitting. (check out my guide here!)

If you’re looking for more personalized help, we have a great community of Recycling Ambassadors on The Bra Recyclers. They can assist you in finding the perfect bra for your body type and style preferences.

Here is my checklist for ensuring you’ve got the right fit:

Adjust Straps & Bands:

  • Make sure the straps are snug but not digging in.
  • The band should sit comfortably, parallel to the ground.

Check the Fit:

  • Standing: Ensure the bra stays in place and the cups fit well.
  • Sitting: Check that the band doesn’t ride up and the cups still support.
  • Bending: Make sure the bra doesn’t shift or cause spillage.

Feel for Comfort:

  • Move around and see if the bra remains comfortable and supportive.

Example: For a more comfortable fit, consider a broader band that avoids pinching or bulging, as demonstrated here.

Sis, You Got This!

I’m not here to pretend that sister sizing is a walk in the park, but following this guide can be as easy as tic-tac-toe.

As a bra fitter, my mission is to ensure that I can offer you the most comfortable options tailored to your body type and desired style. Sister sizing allows me to recommend alternatives and expand your choices.

For plus size or petite women and girls struggling to find suitable styles, I’ve introduced them to sizes they hadn’t considered before. I aim to create a “bra-vo” moment for everyone I fit.

What to Do with Your Ill-Fitting Bras

I hope this guide has helped you find your sister size! If you upgrade your bras, you might wonder what to do with those that no longer fit.

Hint: Don’t throw them away!

The Bra Recyclers collects unwanted, gently used bras for recycling and donates them to women in need.

For many women in underserved communities, a bra is a luxury they cannot afford, and particularly for plus size women, bras can offer modesty and comfort while facing a vulnerable situation.

You will not only support women in need but also help reduce textile waste by supporting global sustainability initiatives!

It’s officially back-to-school season, which can be exciting or nerve-wracking. For plus size teens going through puberty, this is a time when confidence and self-esteem can take a hit. We are here to help with an informative Back-to-School Bra Guide for plus size teens, to help you both navigate through this time!

Going back to school can make these feelings even more intense, so it’s super essential our teen girls feel comfortable and supported in every way.

Most parents prioritize school uniforms, stationery, and backpacks but often overlook the importance of a comfortable and supportive bra, particularly for our plus size or cuvier teens.

When I started school, a bra was not at the top of my school shopping list.

However, it’s an essential item for girls going through puberty who may be more developed than others their age.

My dedication to supporting students with the essential resource of underwear was sparked when a teacher contacted us about a 6th-grade student who required a bra in a larger size — specifically, a 44G.

The girl’s parents couldn’t afford a new bra, and the options for inclusive sizing in their rural area were limited.

This young girl had issues with self-esteem and even talked about self-harm because she didn’t have the right bra to wear to school. Bullying and harassment from peers can lead to students skipping school.

Skipping school can lead to chronic absenteeism and perpetuate the cycle of poverty, increasing the likelihood of unemployment and homelessness down the line since kids who miss school are 7x more likely to drop out.

From this experience, I wanted to help support pre-teens and teens to feel good about themselves from the inside out.

But first, how do you know if you need a new bra?

Six Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bra

Six Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bra
Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens

Before we get to the Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens, here are some key tips for every one who rocks a bra. If you notice any of the following signs, it might be time to replace your bra:

#1. The Band is Stretched Out

Remember that the band of your bra provides the majority of support. If the bra is stretched out, it will not provide the support needed for your cups. This will cause the bra to ride up, meaning your breasts are not supported and can also cause the underwires to dig.

#2. You Are on the Last Set of Hooks

When your bra is stretched out and no longer tight on the tightest hooks, it’s time for a replacement.

#3. Slipping and Sliding Straps

Constantly adjusting slipping straps? This might indicate that the bra is too old or no longer fits correctly.

#4. Cups Too Big or Too Small

During their development, teenagers may experience weight fluctuations and hormonal changes, leading to the need for proper bra support. Puckering or ill-fitting bra cups can result in an unflattering appearance under clothing.

#5. The Colors Have Faded

If you can’t remember the color of your bra or if the fabric has stains or tears, it’s a clear sign that it needs to be replaced.

#6. It’s Uncomfortable

If your bra is constantly uncomfortable, consider replacing it. No need to suffer from poking underwires any longer.

So, whether it’s time to upgrade your teen’s bra or you’re shopping for their first one, these five tips for teen bra shopping will help you make the back-to-school season as smooth as possible.

Back-to-School Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens: Five Shopping Tips and More!

Bra shopping for teens can be a challenge. We all know how fussy girls can be, and often, they’ll opt for the prettiest bra on the shelf without considering comfort and function.

Through years of experience supporting parents and teens in finding well-fitting bras, I have compiled my top five tips for finding the right bra this back-to-school season through this fun and informative Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens!

#1 Measure Up!

Since bodies change over time, knowing your teen’s current bra size by getting measured is important to finding the right fit. While getting professionally fitted is the best starting point, many teen girls might prefer to measure at home.

In my guide to getting the right fit, I offer advice on both professional bra fittings and tips for measuring at home so you can choose the approach that suits you best.

Check out my Guide to Getting Fitted here.

#2 Prioritize Comfort and Fit

If girls are more physically developed than their peers, they may experience backaches and posture issues, which can make concentrating difficult and potentially impact their grades.

Since our teens spend between 6-8 hours in school and potentially longer with extra extracurricular activities and sports – comfort, and fit should be a priority when shopping for a bra.

One of the main reasons teens often don’t wear the right bra (if they wear one at all) is that they’re more focused on what’s cute and trending on social media.

It’s important to guide them toward styles that offer both comfort and style, helping them understand the variety of options available that can make them feel good and look great.

The key is finding the right size so the bra is comfortable to wear all day at school.

Consider these features when shopping for teen bras:

✅ Non-itchy fabrics: When picking out bras, go for ones made of comfy, breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or modal. These are also good for sensitive skin.

✅ Moisture-wicking properties: It keeps skin dry and comfortable, which is especially important for our teen girls who participate in sports or gym classes.

✅ Racerback or cross-back styles Offer better support, especially for narrow shoulders. Teens won’t have to worry about straps slipping down. This style works well under racerback tank tops or shirts, making it a practical option.

✅ Wireless bras: These are great for teens who don’t need an underwire since they’re super comfy and flexible. They’re great for sensitive skin, give you lots of freedom while offering support, and don’t restrict growing bodies.

✅ Wider band: The wider the back and sides of a bra, the better the support, regardless of whether it has an underwire. Underwires provide better lift and separation to help shape the breast, but a wider band enhances this effect by spreading support over a larger area.

#3 Consider Versatility

Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens

Getting ready for school can be stressful for teen girls who are already conscious of their appearance, so ensuring they have different styles of bras can help them through those stressful mornings.

Plus, it’s essential to help your teen feel confident and supported in various school settings. Here are my recommendations for different styles of bras to choose from during your back-to-school shop:

✅ T-shirt bras: These are great for everyday wear and provide a smooth, seamless look that won’t show through clothes, making them perfect for any classroom setting. It adds support and shape without bulk, helping girls feel confident and comfortable.

✅ Bralettes: They’re comfy and stylish, perfect for casual outfits or dress-down days. Their soft, wire-free design makes them ideal for long school days when comfort is a priority. I recommend looking for ones that provide lining or light padding.

✅ Convertible bras: These are super versatile, with adjustable straps that allow your teen to switch styles to strapless or racerback. This means your teen can wear the same bra with different outfits, whether for a formal school event, a casual day, or a physical education class. A convertible bra ensures they’re always prepared, reducing stress about wardrobe malfunctions or visible straps.

✅ Sports bras: If your teen is into sports or has to attend gym class, make sure you have medium- to high-impact sports bras, especially if they have a curvier figure. Ensuring your teen has a good sports bra can prevent them from skipping sports due to embarrassment or discomfort, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Girlfriend Collective is a good choice for finding versatile fits that don’t compromise style or sustainability.

#4 Check the School Dress Code

Since most schools enforce dress codes, parents and students should follow these rules to avoid getting dress code violations. If you break the rules, you might have to meet with the school, or your teen might face a short-term suspension or even get sent home.

As part of our Everyone Deserves Underwear Program, some schools we support have asked us not to provide sexier styles like push-ups or unlined lacy bras.

These items are available for parents to purchase for their students; however, many of the schools we work with would rather not distribute them.

It’s a good idea to check the parent and student handbook for specific dress code policies. This will help students dress appropriately for school activities and avoid potentially embarrassing moments.

#5 Consider Durability and Quality

When shopping for bras, consider choosing ones made from durable materials or ones that can be worn and washed multiple times.

Try to find bras labeled as sustainable or made from quality materials. These options can help reduce environmental impact while maintaining durability.

Your teen’s bras should be as reliable as their best friend—unlike most of their teenage crushes!

Brands like Non-Disclosure Apparel offer sustainable bras in various styles and sizes for teens looking for their first bra.

Durable bras save money and minimize waste. Remember to recycle your old bras to further contribute to sustainability!

How Can You Make the Most Out of Your Bra?

Vivien Contour Plus
Vivien Contour Plus via AdoreMe.com

Remember to check your bras every 6-9 months for signs of wear and tear, as mentioned above, when it’s time to replace them.

You can do some simple things to prolong the life of your bra:

  • Reduce the frequency of washing your bras — maybe every three times you wear them. However, if you are an athlete, you will probably need to wash your bras after every wear, especially if you are sweating.
  • Make sure you wash your bras in a lingerie bag. If you don’t hand wash them, wash them on a hand wash or gentle cycle with a gentle soap.
  • Don’t put your bras in a dryer—let them air dry flat. This helps them keep their shape and prevent underwire breakage. If you have to put them in a dryer, then make sure you hook the bras securely and place them in a lingerie bag so that they don’t get tangled on other items.

Make Bra Shopping a Positive Experience

Being a teenager can be overwhelming, and it’s no different for parents! It reminds us that our kids are growing up fast. I vividly remember my first experience helping a preteen shop for her first bra—it feels like just yesterday.

We tried different styles, made adjustments, and discussed how to care for her new bras, including washing them in a lingerie bag on a gentle cycle.

By the end, everyone was smiling. She chose a bra she adored, and I received a heartfelt note from her, expressing that the experience wasn’t scary at all. ❤👏

Finding the right bra for your preteen or teen can be a memorable and positive experience if you follow the tips in this article.

Got Unwanted Bras?

Ladies, if you’re anything like me, you know that finding the best bra for a plus size frame can be a real challenge. Every bra has pros and cons, but getting all the features you need in one bra feels nearly impossible. How about a few bra hacks for plus size folks?

Throughout my 15+ years of fitting women in bras, I’ve heard the same common challenges about plus size bras:

  • Straps that dig into the shoulders
  • Wider bands that don’t accommodate smaller cups
  • Bands that ride up or feel too tight
  • Cups that don’t provide enough support or coverage
  • Straps that slip down

…and the list goes on!

Due to the lack of representation of plus size women and styles designed for curvy figures, we need to get creative and support ourselves until the industry catches up.

We have to think of inventive ways to have our own backs… literally!

But first things first: before I share my top 6 bra hacks for plus size women, it’s important to start with this essential step to ensure you get the best fit from your bra…

Get Fitted to Discover Your Baseline Bra Size

You will probably hear me say this again and again, but I don’t want to minimize the importance of knowing your bra size. It will serve as a baseline when you are shopping for bras. A baseline will be a starting point as you hunt for the best style and fit.

Most women have never been professionally fitted for a bra or were last fitted when they were much younger. As plus size women, we often end up in stores that don’t cater to our needs and are squeezed into the largest size available.

Professional fitting is important, but finding bra fitters specializing in plus size bras is equally essential.

Check out my Step-By-Step Guide And Checklist for Professional Bra Fitting here.

6 Bra Hacks for Plus Size Women

#1 Bra Extenders for Wider Band Needs

There’s a misconception that being plus size means having big boobs (buzzer sound), wrong!

Many plus size women have wider band sizes but smaller busts. My sister is one of them, and finding her a bra was challenging.

Most retailers will have inventory based on the most popular band and cup size combinations. Many stores that claim to specialize in plus size lingerie often don’t carry cup sizes like B or C.

Instead, they stock bras with typically larger cup sizes, assuming the cup size increases proportionally as the band size increases.

After visiting three different stores, we finally found a bra fitter with some great advice I hadn’t considered. It was an “Aha!” moment. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t considered it before, but the solution we found required the opposite approach to what I had been trying.

Instead of searching for a wider band to accommodate my sister’s smaller cup size, we needed to find a bra that fit her cup size and then use extenders to adjust the band.

Bra extenders are a brilliant tool for plus size women with smaller breasts. They expand your options, allowing you to enjoy a variety of styles without compromising on looking and feeling sexy.

#2 Front Closure Bras

Trust me when I say that once you try a front-closure bra, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it…

Front-closure bras fasten at the front, making them easier to put on and take off. They ensure a snug fit that effectively supports and distributes your bust. They usually have wider bands and straps, which means they stay in place without digging into your skin.

Many women prefer front-closure bras because they are easier to put on and take off. While it’s typical to fasten the back of standard bras and then twist them around to position them properly, continually twisting a standard back-fastening bra can cause it to wear out more quickly. This makes front-closure bras more long-lasting and durable compared to standard bras.

Seriously, front-closure bras are lifesavers. They’re comfortable and supportive and make getting dressed a breeze. Give them a try, and you’ll understand why they’re my go-to hack for plus size lingerie.

#3 Strap Cushions for Reduced Pressure

Have you ever slipped into your favorite bra only to feel uncomfortable pressure within an hour? This one is for all the ladies who adore the look of thinner straps but dread the discomfort that often accompanies them.

Strap cushions can be handy when your go-to everyday bra lacks comfort.

If your shoulders often hurt when you wear bras, it’s essential to check if the band provides enough support and that your straps are well-adjusted for adequate support. Strap cushions are a great add-on to ensure your bra is super comfy and still looks good.

You may find my next tip helpful if you’re having issues with strap support…

#4 Converting Regular Bras into Racerbacks Using a J-Hook

It’s so frustrating when my bra straps won’t stay put and keep slipping off my shoulders at the worst possible moments! We can all relate to needing extra support to keep everything where it should be.

One of the best hacks for plus size women is converting regular bras into racerbacks using a J-Hook, also known as a bra strap clip. This little accessory pulls the straps closer together, preventing those annoying slips and adding extra support.

If your bra doesn’t already have a built-in J-Hook, don’t worry—you can easily buy a bra strap clip online at Amazon or selected lingerie stores.

These clips can be a game-changer! Anytime I’ve used this hack, I leave the house feeling confident and comfortable, knowing my straps will stay in place without the discomfort of overly tight straps.

#5 Removing Deodorant Stains with Vinegar

Remember this: While many of our tips are about finding the right bra and staying comfy, taking care of your bras is also essential. When you look after them, your bras will last longer and continue to give you the support you need.

I always use vinegar for pretty much everything, just like my mom and grandma. I’ve found that it’s great for dealing with those annoying deodorant stains on my black bras. I only use white vinegar, which works like a charm!

  1. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar directly onto the stains.
  1. Use a clean toothbrush to gently scrub the vinegar into the fabric or rub the stained areas together.
  1. Allow the vinegar to work its magic for 30-60 minutes.
  1. Toss your bra in a bra bag to protect it during washing.
  1. Wash the bra gently or using a hand wash cycle on the washing machine.
  1. Lay your bra on a flat surface to dry.

Sure, many experts prefer hand washing, but let’s be honest—that’s a bit too much effort for me. Vinegar removes stains and deodorizes, leaving my bras smelling fresh and clean.

If you’re ready to part ways with your gently used bras, consider recycling them with The Bra Recyclers

But before you do, follow the above steps to give them a good clean with vinegar to ensure they’re ready for their next life.

#6 Bras with Removable Pads

I love the flexibility of my bra with removable pads—it gives me options based on my activities and plans for the day. If you’re like me and even a slight breeze makes your nipples say hello to everyone, the pads are a lifesaver.

Plus, it’s nice to have a more contoured shape if you wear something like a T-shirt. Removable pads are also great for adjusting the level of support, making these bras perfect for both lounging at home and hitting the gym.

Okay, ladies, am I the only one who has tried to hack together plus size strapless bras using my regular bra?

With the lack of options for plus size women, many of us bigger-boobed ladies are guilty of tucking our straps in to create a DIY bra only to get frustrated at the discomfort and unsightly style.

I’ll be honest; this was not always an issue for me. I was a late bloomer and only fit the plus size category later in life. So, I know how great it feels to walk out of the door with just a bandeau bra on without the girls slipping out.

But as I got older and gained weight, I found the bandeau was more of a bandaid than a bra-aid!

If you’re like me and need the girls to stay in place, finding comfortable strapless bras can be as tricky as getting my husband to dust around the house!

On a serious note, finding the right plus size strapless bra is key to feeling confident with your curves and rocking that strapless dress or top you’ve been waiting to wear.

It’s always assured me that I’m not alone after watching celebrities at the awards making adjustments and trying to keep their strapless bra in place. It shows that getting the right strapless fit is difficult for all sizes of women, even for those with a professional stylist.

So, if you’re ready to wave goodbye to torpedo boobs and you want your plus size strapless bras to lift and separate so you can look cute and sexy in your strapless ensemble, join me, Elaine Birks-Mitchell, as we tackle this BRA-blem together.

Common Strapless Bra Problems

Through my journey of finding the best strapless bra, I want to share some of the most common problems I’ve encountered. You’ll probably resonate with at least one of these!

#1 Difficulty Finding Plus Size Strapless Bras

Not only are plus size strapless bras hard to find, but they’re often overlooked as an option plus size ladies, especially those with cups G+. But as plus size women, we still want the option of rocking the sexy one-shoulder top or strapless sundress.

If you have bigger cups and are worried or have struggled to find a strapless bra, I suggest going to a professional bra fitter in a store that offers plus size bras. They can give you advice and recommend the best style for you.

#2 Slippage and Lack of Support

Strapless Bra Women

Strapless bras often slip down throughout the day, especially for plus size women with a bigger bust. The constant adjustments and pulling up are enough to prevent anyone from wanting a strapless bra.

Believe it or not, most of your bra’s support comes from the band. While straps provide a supporting role, if the band is too loose, chances are your tatas will come out to say hi. Unfortunately, I have had this problem before, and I am sure some of you have too!

If you think of the bra band as Beyoncé, then straps are like the backup dancers. The show can go on without them, but they’re there, and they simply give things an extra boost.

#3 Digging and Discomfort

If you’ve ever had the band and underwires of a strapless bra dig into your skin, you’re not alone. The pain and irritation are usually due to the bra being the wrong size or style.

This common BRA-blem comes down to ensuring we are wearing the right size bra – emphasizing the importance of professional bra fitting!

#4 Unflattering Shape

Did someone say uni-boob?🙈

Some strapless bras can create an unappealing silhouette, such as a uni-boob (where breasts are squished together) or torpedo boobs (where breasts are pointed unnaturally outward).

Certain styles of bras cause these unflattering shapes. Keep reading my tips below to discover my suggestions on how to avoid the dreaded uni-boob!

Our girls deserve better than this!

How many of these BRA-blems have you struggled with?

Okay, let’s not dwell on the negatives. The good news is that there are some key tips for identifying the best strapless plus size bra for you, and I’ve detailed them below.

Ladies, it’s time to give the girls a makeover!

5 Tips for Choosing the Best Strapless Plus Size Bras

#1 Get Fitted For the Right Size

Ladies, ladies, ladies!

So, here’s the deal: You’ve probably heard that 8 out of 10 women wear the wrong-sized bra. But here’s the thing – it’s more about the fact that sizing standards for bras need to be more consistent, and most of us haven’t had a professional fitting.

From what I’ve seen, at least 80% of the women I’ve sized have never been professionally fitted or used inaccurate self-measurement methods.

Trust me, it doesn’t hurt. It’s nothing like your annual women’s health exam. If you find the right bra fitter, she should make you feel comfortable, relaxed, and ready to make you feel like the queen you are.

Knowing your bra size and styles that fit your body type makes shopping for bras a much more enjoyable experience. Otherwise, it can be a nightmare, almost as bad as shopping for a great pair of jeans.

#2. Consider A Wide Band

Wide Band Bra

A wider band provides more surface area to distribute the weight of your bust evenly. This is crucial for support, as the band in a strapless bra is taking on an additional role of the straps.

For us plus size women, this increased support prevents the bra from slipping or shifting throughout the day. Another benefit is the wide band’s smoothing effect, especially on your sides and back!

#3. Try Strapless Bras with Boning

Okay, hear me out… I know bras with boning are not for everyone, but there is a reason for this feature in strapless bras.

The boning helps to create a firm barrier that prevents breasts from spilling out of the sides, which can be a common issue in strapless bras, especially for those fuller-busted ladies!

Styles of bras that have boning are longline bras, corsets, and bustiers.

One of the main reasons for discomfort with boning is when the bra is too small. Make sure you get fit with the right size, ladies!”

#4. Look for Deep Underwires

The underwires in most typical bras have a shallow, semi-circle shape, which provides additional support to the straps.

The underwires in strapless bras are more of a deep U shape, compensating for the absence of straps by offering a sturdier base and enhanced support structure.

Deep underwires help to shape the bust by providing a defined cup structure.

They lift the breasts and give a more contoured and natural silhouette. Underwires also help to separate the breasts, preventing the dreaded “uni-boob” effect and reducing discomfort from breasts rubbing together.

#5. Check for Silicone Strips

Gripper strips are typically made of silicone or similar materials and are designed to create friction against the skin, which helps to keep the bra in place. It’s essential to ensure that your skin is dry and that you haven’t applied a lot of lotion or powder, as this can cause the gripper strips to slip.

This is especially important for plus size ladies, as the additional weight of the bust requires more robust measures to prevent the bra from slipping.

Gripper strips can also prevent the bra from shifting and causing discomfort, and ladies, you’ll know this one is important for keeping the girls in check!

#6. Choose Bras with Multiple Hook-and-Eye Closures

Multiple closure options allow for a more secure and customizable fit, essential in preventing the bra from slipping or shifting throughout the day. I recommend at least 4 hook-and-eyes.

Ladies, If you want to reduce discomfort while getting that all-important lift and shape, multiple hooks distribute the pressure more evenly across the back, giving you the confidence you need to wear your favorite strapless top or dress!

#7. Break It In First

This is one of the most important tips I can give you. If you are like me, I purchased my strapless bra for a particular outfit I wanted to wear. It’s not so different from when you buy a new pair of shoes… they need breaking in before you wear them to the big event.

If this isn’t right, a test run gives you enough time to return to the store for a different size or style bra. There’s nothing worse than getting an hour into your event and realizing you’re stuck in an ill-fitting, uncomfortable bra for the rest of the evening—yikes!

This is your opportunity to take the “no-way-in-hell” test to see if you can survive wearing this bra for at least an hour.

To test out your bra, I suggest trying one or more of these:

  1. Raise your arms and make sure your bra doesn’t slip down.
  2. Bend over and make nothing spills out
  3. Sit in a chair and make sure you don’t feel like you are being stabbed
  4. And most importantly, put on your favorite song and dance around. See how often you have to pull up your bra as you move.

My Recommended Alternatives for Plus Size Strapless Bras

As a woman who has struggled with strapless bras, I understand that these tips might not work for every body shape or boob size. So, I wanted to share my top alternatives to give you as many options to feel confident and sexy!

Longline Bras

Longline bras with wider bands offer added support and coverage, making them an excellent alternative to strapless bras. They are often confused with bustiers and corsets, which are very structured and form-fitting.

However, longline bras also typically extend further down the torso to cover the waistline and are much less likely to slip down or ride up.

They offer smooth lines, enhanced support, and a combination of bra and shapewear, which are beneficial for women aiming to achieve a specific look.

I have tried a longline bra, which works well for me, mainly because it helps smooth out my sides and back.

Convertible Bras

Convertible bras come with straps that can be adjusted or removed to suit different outfits, providing versatility and support. I have a convertible bra that works very well for me because it is the right size and provides the necessary coverage for most of my outfits that need a strapless bra.

Corsets or Bustiers

Corsets or bustiers offer additional lift and support, which makes them perfect for special occasions. While they’re usually longline, it’s important to note that corsets and bustiers differ from longline bras.

These strapless bras accentuate the bust with a demi-cup shape and typically have an adjustable band secured by laces or several rows of hook-and-eye closures.

Bandeaus with Underwire

Many bandeaus with underwire feature reinforced bands and side boning for enhanced stability and shaping, ensuring a secure and flattering fit for fuller busts.

I still wear bandeau bras with underwire and strapless sundresses with built-in padding. They give me that extra lift, separation, and support in case I am dancing the night away and something slips.

Boob Tape

Boob tape lifts, shapes, and holds your breasts in place. People typically use it when other plus size strapless bras are not an option because they show through your outfit. Ladies, if you are a G+ cup, you may find boob tape more of a challenge than the other alternatives.

I personally didn’t have a good experience with breast tape when I had smaller breasts, as it irritated my skin. However, I’ve heard that some women like it.

If you decide to use it, follow the directions for applying and removing it. Look for a brand with great reviews, especially regarding painless removal.

The most important thing to note is that not all options will be comfortable for everyone, but it’s about finding what’s suitable for you that makes you feel beautiful.

Ready to Ditch Your Uncomfortable Bras?

Finding comfortable plus-size strapless bras can feel more like a chore for plus-size women, especially when it seems that nothing fits right or feels comfortable.

I hear you, ladies… It’s a struggle! But hopefully, with the tips I’ve provided above, you will feel more validated and confident about starting to shop for your new strapless bra.

If you’ve tried many plus size strapless bras in the past that just haven’t been the right fit, you might be wondering what to do with the ones you no longer need.

Fortunately, as the CEO and Founder of The Bra Recyclers, a social enterprise dedicated to recycling lingerie, I have just the solution for you.

Before upgrading, consider decluttering your drawers and recycling your gently used bras to help provide this much-needed resource to women in need.

Your support will help homeless women and girls who may need a bra for protection against sexual assault, as well as survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking who have fled terrible circumstances with no belongings.

In third-world countries, women face horrific practices, such as breast ironing, aimed at preventing sexual assault by flattening the breasts. By recycling your bras, you can help provide a resource to stop practices like these and give women back their freedom.

Finally, we proudly support Title 1 school students facing underwear poverty. Plus size bras are one of the most requested yet least recycled items – meaning young plus size girls are bullied for their breast size.

So, if you have unwanted bras, there is an opportunity to make a massive difference in these people’s lives.

Ready to get out with the old and in with the new while making a difference?

Recycle your bras at TheBraRecyclers.com to get started!

I hope this guide has helped you (and your “girls”) find the best plus size strapless bras. It’s important to be kind to yourself and avoid making comparisons when something doesn’t work for you. Instead, celebrate your unique style—nobody is you, and what’s more comforting than that?

So, do yourself a favor—get rid of old bras that no longer serve you, recycle them, and increase your confidence in your next new fit!
