It’s officially back-to-school season, which can be exciting or nerve-wracking. For plus size teens going through puberty, this is a time when confidence and self-esteem can take a hit. We are here to help with an informative Back-to-School Bra Guide for plus size teens, to help you both navigate through this time!

Going back to school can make these feelings even more intense, so it’s super essential our teen girls feel comfortable and supported in every way.

Most parents prioritize school uniforms, stationery, and backpacks but often overlook the importance of a comfortable and supportive bra, particularly for our plus size or cuvier teens.

When I started school, a bra was not at the top of my school shopping list.

However, it’s an essential item for girls going through puberty who may be more developed than others their age.

My dedication to supporting students with the essential resource of underwear was sparked when a teacher contacted us about a 6th-grade student who required a bra in a larger size — specifically, a 44G.

The girl’s parents couldn’t afford a new bra, and the options for inclusive sizing in their rural area were limited.

This young girl had issues with self-esteem and even talked about self-harm because she didn’t have the right bra to wear to school. Bullying and harassment from peers can lead to students skipping school.

Skipping school can lead to chronic absenteeism and perpetuate the cycle of poverty, increasing the likelihood of unemployment and homelessness down the line since kids who miss school are 7x more likely to drop out.

From this experience, I wanted to help support pre-teens and teens to feel good about themselves from the inside out.

But first, how do you know if you need a new bra?

Six Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bra

Six Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bra

Before we get to the Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens, here are some key tips for every one who rocks a bra. If you notice any of the following signs, it might be time to replace your bra:

#1. The Band is Stretched Out

Remember that the band of your bra provides the majority of support. If the bra is stretched out, it will not provide the support needed for your cups. This will cause the bra to ride up, meaning your breasts are not supported and can also cause the underwires to dig.

#2. You Are on the Last Set of Hooks

When your bra is stretched out and no longer tight on the tightest hooks, it’s time for a replacement.

#3. Slipping and Sliding Straps

Constantly adjusting slipping straps? This might indicate that the bra is too old or no longer fits correctly.

#4. Cups Too Big or Too Small

During their development, teenagers may experience weight fluctuations and hormonal changes, leading to the need for proper bra support. Puckering or ill-fitting bra cups can result in an unflattering appearance under clothing.

#5. The Colors Have Faded

If you can’t remember the color of your bra or if the fabric has stains or tears, it’s a clear sign that it needs to be replaced.

#6. It’s Uncomfortable

If your bra is constantly uncomfortable, consider replacing it. No need to suffer from poking underwires any longer.

So, whether it’s time to upgrade your teen’s bra or you’re shopping for their first one, these five tips for teen bra shopping will help you make the back-to-school season as smooth as possible.

Back-to-School Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens: Five Shopping Tips and More!

Bra shopping for teens can be a challenge. We all know how fussy girls can be, and often, they’ll opt for the prettiest bra on the shelf without considering comfort and function.

Through years of experience supporting parents and teens in finding well-fitting bras, I have compiled my top five tips for finding the right bra this back-to-school season through this fun and informative Bra Guide for Plus Size Teens!

#1 Measure Up!

Since bodies change over time, knowing your teen’s current bra size by getting measured is important to finding the right fit. While getting professionally fitted is the best starting point, many teen girls might prefer to measure at home.

In my guide to getting the right fit, I offer advice on both professional bra fittings and tips for measuring at home so you can choose the approach that suits you best.

Check out my Guide to Getting Fitted here.

#2 Prioritize Comfort and Fit

If girls are more physically developed than their peers, they may experience backaches and posture issues, which can make concentrating difficult and potentially impact their grades.

Since our teens spend between 6-8 hours in school and potentially longer with extra extracurricular activities and sports – comfort, and fit should be a priority when shopping for a bra.

One of the main reasons teens often don’t wear the right bra (if they wear one at all) is that they’re more focused on what’s cute and trending on social media.

It’s important to guide them toward styles that offer both comfort and style, helping them understand the variety of options available that can make them feel good and look great.

The key is finding the right size so the bra is comfortable to wear all day at school.

Consider these features when shopping for teen bras:

✅ Non-itchy fabrics: When picking out bras, go for ones made of comfy, breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or modal. These are also good for sensitive skin.

✅ Moisture-wicking properties: It keeps skin dry and comfortable, which is especially important for our teen girls who participate in sports or gym classes.

✅ Racerback or cross-back styles Offer better support, especially for narrow shoulders. Teens won’t have to worry about straps slipping down. This style works well under racerback tank tops or shirts, making it a practical option.

✅ Wireless bras: These are great for teens who don’t need an underwire since they’re super comfy and flexible. They’re great for sensitive skin, give you lots of freedom while offering support, and don’t restrict growing bodies.

✅ Wider band: The wider the back and sides of a bra, the better the support, regardless of whether it has an underwire. Underwires provide better lift and separation to help shape the breast, but a wider band enhances this effect by spreading support over a larger area.

#3 Consider Versatility

Getting ready for school can be stressful for teen girls who are already conscious of their appearance, so ensuring they have different styles of bras can help them through those stressful mornings.

Plus, it’s essential to help your teen feel confident and supported in various school settings. Here are my recommendations for different styles of bras to choose from during your back-to-school shop:

✅ T-shirt bras: These are great for everyday wear and provide a smooth, seamless look that won’t show through clothes, making them perfect for any classroom setting. It adds support and shape without bulk, helping girls feel confident and comfortable.

✅ Bralettes: They’re comfy and stylish, perfect for casual outfits or dress-down days. Their soft, wire-free design makes them ideal for long school days when comfort is a priority. I recommend looking for ones that provide lining or light padding.

✅ Convertible bras: These are super versatile, with adjustable straps that allow your teen to switch styles to strapless or racerback. This means your teen can wear the same bra with different outfits, whether for a formal school event, a casual day, or a physical education class. A convertible bra ensures they’re always prepared, reducing stress about wardrobe malfunctions or visible straps.

✅ Sports bras: If your teen is into sports or has to attend gym class, make sure you have medium- to high-impact sports bras, especially if they have a curvier figure. Ensuring your teen has a good sports bra can prevent them from skipping sports due to embarrassment or discomfort, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Girlfriend Collective is a good choice for finding versatile fits that don’t compromise style or sustainability.

#4 Check the School Dress Code

Since most schools enforce dress codes, parents and students should follow these rules to avoid getting dress code violations. If you break the rules, you might have to meet with the school, or your teen might face a short-term suspension or even get sent home.

As part of our Everyone Deserves Underwear Program, some schools we support have asked us not to provide sexier styles like push-ups or unlined lacy bras.

These items are available for parents to purchase for their students; however, many of the schools we work with would rather not distribute them.

It’s a good idea to check the parent and student handbook for specific dress code policies. This will help students dress appropriately for school activities and avoid potentially embarrassing moments.

#5 Consider Durability and Quality

When shopping for bras, consider choosing ones made from durable materials or ones that can be worn and washed multiple times.

Try to find bras labeled as sustainable or made from quality materials. These options can help reduce environmental impact while maintaining durability.

Your teen’s bras should be as reliable as their best friend—unlike most of their teenage crushes!

Brands like Non-Disclosure Apparel offer sustainable bras in various styles and sizes for teens looking for their first bra.

Durable bras save money and minimize waste. Remember to recycle your old bras to further contribute to sustainability!

How Can You Make the Most Out of Your Bra?

Vivien Contour Plus

Remember to check your bras every 6-9 months for signs of wear and tear, as mentioned above, when it’s time to replace them.

You can do some simple things to prolong the life of your bra:

  • Reduce the frequency of washing your bras — maybe every three times you wear them. However, if you are an athlete, you will probably need to wash your bras after every wear, especially if you are sweating.
  • Make sure you wash your bras in a lingerie bag. If you don’t hand wash them, wash them on a hand wash or gentle cycle with a gentle soap.
  • Don’t put your bras in a dryer—let them air dry flat. This helps them keep their shape and prevent underwire breakage. If you have to put them in a dryer, then make sure you hook the bras securely and place them in a lingerie bag so that they don’t get tangled on other items.

Make Bra Shopping a Positive Experience

Being a teenager can be overwhelming, and it’s no different for parents! It reminds us that our kids are growing up fast. I vividly remember my first experience helping a preteen shop for her first bra—it feels like just yesterday.

We tried different styles, made adjustments, and discussed how to care for her new bras, including washing them in a lingerie bag on a gentle cycle.

By the end, everyone was smiling. She chose a bra she adored, and I received a heartfelt note from her, expressing that the experience wasn’t scary at all. ❤👏

Finding the right bra for your preteen or teen can be a memorable and positive experience if you follow the tips in this article.

Got Unwanted Bras?

Calling all supporters of girls’ education! Did you know that plus size bras are the most requested yet least donated items for students in Title 1 schools

If you no longer use bras, you can make a real difference this back-to-school season by recycling them with The Bra Recyclers. Your support can help girls in need feel confident and empowered as they head back to school.

This not only helps girls succeed in school but also supports our planet by extending the life of usable textiles instead of throwing them in landfills. Recycle your bras here.

We are seeing these trends cross over into the wide calf boot styles.

Looking for new Wide Calf Boots? How about one of these 8 Cowboy Boots?

Let’s be clear, cowboy boots have always been a cult classic depending on who you ask and where you’re from, but we can’t deny that Queen Bey’s influence has this fashion craze back with even more ferocity. From classic styles to modern twists, here are 8 must-have cowboy boot styles that every fashion enthusiast needs in their closet.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Pair them with a flowy maxi dress for a touch of boho romance, or rock them with denim shorts and a crop top for a festival-ready vibe. Just remember, when it comes to summer boots, comfort is key. Look for styles with breathable linings and walkable heels so you can two-step your way through the season in style.

Fit Tips for those Wide Calf Cowboy Boots

Now that you have the cheat sheet on which cowboy boot styles are essential for your collection let’s get into some foolproof tips to keep in mind while shopping for wide-calf boots. You will save yourself much heartache if you measure the circumference of your calves prior to purchasing, especially if you’re doing so online. Prioritize wide calf and adjustable features; brands that cater to plus-size clients are often well-informed on accommodating varying calf sizes.

Opt for cowboy boots with stretch panels or elastic gussets along the calf area for a flexible and comfortable fit. These boots are designed to adapt to your body changes, providing a versatile, long-lasting option.  If all else fails and you just can’t find what you’re looking for, consider customization. This alternative allows you to tailor your boots to your exact measurements. *Voila* No calf circumference, no problem!

Are you loving the cowboy core trend as much as we are? Let us know how much of a chokehold it has you in down in the comments below!

1. Enlist backup and Invite a Friend Over For Help and Treats:

Spring cleaning your closet is always more fun with a friend by your side. Invite your girlfriends over for a closet cleanout party and make room for new clothes together. Fuel your decluttering session with treats like cupcakes or pizza – because let’s face it, friends will do anything for food! This may also be the perfect opportunity to make it a clothing swap session or a way to offload a few items that need to go!

2. Try It On:

When was the last time you tried on every item in your closet? Take the time to assess the fit and condition of each piece. If it no longer fits or needs repairs you haven’t gotten around to, it’s time to bid it farewell. Be honest with yourself – if it doesn’t make you feel fabulous, it’s time to let it go.

3. Ask & Be Honest With Yourself, Does it Make You Happy:

As you sift through your wardrobe and are spring cleaning your closet, ask yourself if each item truly brings you joy. Keep pieces that make you feel confident and discard those that evoke negative emotions or simply don’t resonate with your style anymore. Consider paring down duplicates – do you really need ten pairs of black jeans?

Tips to Spring Cleaning Your Closet

  • I go through a process of asking myself all types of questions, when cleaning out the closet, just like when I am about to make a purchase. Does it really make you feel like a million bucks and/or does it satisfy a basic need? Keep it! Are you on the fence and cannot bring yourself to love it? Let her go. Do you find yourself doing a little dance in it because you love it? She is a keeper! Conversely, if you have items that make you feel some kind of (negative) way, let it go.

4. Follow The ‘One (or two) Year Rule’:

If you haven’t worn an item in over a year, it’s time to say goodbye. Whether it still has the tag on or is collecting dust in the back of your closet, be ruthless in your curation process. Consider selling or donating these items to make room for pieces you’ll actually wear.

  • What’s the one-year rule? It means getting rid of anything that’s been in your closet for over a year that you haven’t worn. This is a great time to either sell that item to make some extra change or donate it to a thrift store and make someone’s day. Either way, if it’s been in the closet for 1 year it’s time for it to go!

5. Make a Toss it, Donate, & Sell It Pile:

Parting with beloved clothes can be tough, but it’s necessary to make space for new additions. Sort your items into piles – keep, toss, donate, and sell. Toss worn-out or damaged pieces, donate gently used items to those in need, and sell high-end pieces to recoup some cash for your spring shopping spree.

  1. Toss It: So, those jeans that are tattered beyond repair or revival? Toss them. That dress that has lost shape, lose elasticity, whose hem is shot? Let her go, love.
  2. Donate It: Donating your gently used clothes is always a great way to give back to the community. Donating your gently used clothes could really help them out. Only donate clothes in good shape of course, those with rips and stains should be tossed out.
  3. Sell It: There are great places to sell your high-end clothes for a reduced price. You can also organize a small yard sale to make money off your old winter wardrobe right away! Selling your clothes via a Plus Size Consignment store is another way to have make money as the items sell! The more you sell, the more cash you’ll have to buy your spring wear and who can resist that?

6. Hangers are Everything:

After you are done with Spring cleaning your closet, it is time to invest in quality hangers to properly care for your clothes and maximize space in your closet. Opt for wooden or felted hangers, which provide better support and organization, especially for delicate items with fancy sleeves or straps. Consider slim hangers to optimize space and keep your closet visually appealing.

7. Organize Your Closet:

Once you’ve decluttered and curated your wardrobe, it’s time to organize it for easy access and visual appeal. Use canvas compartments for shoes, add hampers to separate clean and dirty clothes, and consider implementing a system that works best for your space. An organized closet will make getting dressed a breeze and elevate your overall fashion experience.

Spring cleaning your closet may seem like a daunting task, but with these tips, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the challenge. You may shed a few tears as you do so but hey, you’re making room for brand new things! Oh! Shopping! That dried your tears up quickly didn’t it?

Here are a few tools you may need while you are spring cleaning your closet!

Embrace the opportunity to refresh your wardrobe and create a space that reflects your style and personality. So, grab your friends, put on some music, and let the spring cleaning begin – your revamped closet awaits!

Are you feeling pumped now? Good! Cleaning out your closet doesn’t have to be as dreadful as it sounds!

Everything’s better with a friend, right? Invite your friends over to help make room for your new clothes, and don’t say no when they expect you do the same for them. The time will fly by, and you’ll never have a chance to get bored.

What tip will be using first, when spring cleaning out your closet?

I’ve been plus size all my life. In high school I was a size 14/16 and the hardest thing was finding the perfect plus size prom dress in my size. Way back in 1999 and 2000 when I was attending proms, internet shopping was still new and thus I was relegated to finding my gown in-stores.

Needless to say this was quite the difficult task, especially on a budget. But, now there are more options in-stores AND an abundance of places to shop online. Being plus size does not mean looking frumpy at the prom. To help you avoid the stress and emotions I felt, we’ve rounded up the top Plus Size Prom Dress trends and 10 places to shop for them!

A Few of the Plus Size Prom Dress Trends

Tips for Shopping for Your Plus Size Prom Dress

Now that we have shared a few places to shop for your dress, how about a few tips to help you find that perfect one?

When it comes to your plus size prom dress, finding what you are looking for as a plus size person can be a bit daunting. BUT! With a few tips, hopefully you will be able to navigate through it all with confidence.

LA FEMME CURVE PLUS SIZE at CinderellasGowns.com
LA FEMME CURVE PLUS SIZE at CinderellasGowns.com
  1. Do your research. Most of plus size shopping happens online, so we tend to have a bit more experience when shopping, but when shopping for a dress, make sure you find out what plus size prom dress trends exist, which brands or designers cater to your style, how long it takes to ship and if you are fortunate, which boutiques and shops are near you.
  2. Know your measurements. Because evening dresses tend to have different cuts and fits than traditional plus size clothing, knowing your bust, waist, and hip measurements will help you understand the sizing you’ll need for the ideal fit.
  3. Define your style. What trends speak the most to you? What will make you feel beautiful? What silhouettes are you most comfortable with? Do you want to be on trend or march to your own beat? Either is fine, but it is important to know what you WANT before you head out to find what you are looking for. If you do not know, that is okay too! In this case, allow yourself the space to let the dress choose you!
  4. Start as Early as You Can. As a plus size person, finding regular clothes can be a hassle. When it comes to specialty clothes, the more time you give yourself to navigate the options, the more confident you will be in finding THAT dress. If you decide to go custom, you will need to research that designers schedule to gauge how long that will take.
  5. Wear Your Ideal Foundations. Will you wear a strapless dress or one shoulder option? It will be important, when trying on your dress to wear the undergarments (your foundations) that will be needed for that style of dress. This means both your bra, panties, and any other desired undergarments that will allow the dress to fit you properly.
  6. Have a Budget in Mind. According to USA Today and Yahoo’s Prom Across America Survey, Between hair and makeup, outfits, tickets and rides to prom, teens are spending an average of more than $600 on prom. Knowing this will help you manage expectations and help you shop in confidence with knowing what your needs are.
  7. Bring Your Besties. Yes, you will probably shop with your guardians but if you are able to have your friends there, this will help give advice, share what they are wearing and might even help encourage you to step out of your comfort zone.

Hopefully, this fun little guide will help you rock out your 2024 prom in style! Make sure you check out the other plus size dresses articles, you may find something there too!

Plus Size Fashion Options, we have them. I have been wanting to revisit this topic for a while now. As I share more designers and brands, one of the biggest and loudest comments I see is about cost and the prices of these garments. As fashion and plus size evolve, so do the idiosyncrasies and nuances of fashion itself, as it pertains to plus size.

15+ years ago, US plus size fashion was quite limited, leaving us Curvy Fashionistas with very little or if any options for shopping and discerning which pieces were of a fashion forward standard. NOW, with the rapid amalgamation of options within plus size clothing, one could easily find herself lost, frustrated, confused, irritated, or flustered when shopping for an ideal outfit or piece of clothing.

Here on TCF, we do not mention prices and do this deliberately. I want to showcase and show off the plus size fashion options, rather than you focusing on the price of something. Showcasing the items and the options we have is raising awareness to the growth of the industry.

Why?

We no longer have one option to dress our curves- we have many, we have a variety of plus size fashion options. However, to better understand and sort through the madness of them all, a budding Fashionista must first understand what these newer segments are and learn the identifiers of these to shop smarter, not harder.

No really WHY?

I want to help you understand what to expect, so that you do not get frustrated, mad, or angry. The more options we have the more similar are the issues shared in straight size fashion. With these options, as in the straight- sized market, you will find certain segments within fashion that are grouped together by price, quality, fit and/or style aesthetic.

This allows us to know WHAT to expect when shopping from a retailer or brand, or designer.

The Five Segments in Plus Size Fashion

RetailDogma highlights these five fashion segments as Haute Couture, Ready-to-Wear (RTW), Diffusion, Bridge and Mass Market. For the plus size and a modern twist, we have defined the plus size fashion segments as: Haute Couture, Luxury & Designer, Contemporary, Mass Market & Fast Fashion, and Discounted & Off-price.

Plus size fashion segments- Contemporary plus size fashion

For the sake of argument and looking at this if were on the floor at… Bloomingdales or Nordstrom. Below, we will group these segments for plus size fashion as straight sized fashion does, to help explain the price discrepancies, size differences, in relation to the integrity and quality of a retailer’s or designer’s garment… let’s dive on into these segments in plus size fashion that are here to help gives us more plus size fashion options to shop from.

Haute Couture Plus Size Fashion

Gradient Biz shares that “Haute Couture refers only to a few fashion houses approved by the French High Fashion Federation, but generally speaking, professional ateliers who make made-to-measure, handcrafted, intricate garments, such as evening wear could be called couture.”

This is one of the areas in plus size fashion that is ripe for the taking. With very few players in this space and few playing on the red carpet, haute couture fashion is a space that is constantly and consistently being called each fashion week cycle for its lack of inclusion and representation.

Designers like Christian Siriano is confidently and proudly catering to the discerning plus size shopper by not only dressing plus size celebrities on the red carpet but also walking plus size bodies during fashion week.

Luxury, Designer, & RTW Plus Size Fashion

One step down from Couture relative to price and exclusivity, but still serves a discerning and well to do client is Luxury and Designer plus size fashion. Yes! They do exist! Goods that are of a higher quality and a respective higher price point are the fashion leaders within plus size. Designers such as: Elena Miro, Marina Rinaldi, Fuzzi, Bella Rene fall into this category.

These luxury designers are oftentimes carried in specialty boutiques or department stores such as Saks and Neiman Marcus and often sell for more than $500+ an item.

Expect the finest fabrics, usually imported from overseas, have a more conservative cut, with the exception of Elena Miro and Fuzzi– but even Marina Rinaldi is changing their silhouettes, impeccably tailored, fully lined, natural fabrics, with exclusivity in availability.

Contemporary Plus Size Fashion

A segment that has been making HUGE fashion strides over the past 10+ years, Contemporary plus size fashion is a segment that has had major room for innovation, participation, and players. Apparel Search asks of contemporary fashion: “what do the brands in this category all have in common? It’s all about quality. Even the most basic item feels luxurious and are finely crafted.”

How to Determine Quality in Plus Size Fashion options
Jibri Fringe Sequin Shift Dress at JibriOnline.com

These contemporary plus size brands are often the thought leaders, innovators, and risk takers within the plus size fashion segments. They continually challenge the status quo or the norm in what fashion should be for the discerning plus size woman.

This fashion forward segment presents mid-priced (sometimes at the same price points as Bridge and Better) fashions both fashion forward and quality driven range from the low $100s and can command over $500.

This segment focuses on the fashion forward options and edge. This segment usually targets the 20-35+ aged woman with more body conscious fits, daring silhouettes, and bold statements. Think Savvy, TBD, mirroring the contemporary collections represented in Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Saks, contemporary plus size fashion offers the fashion forward plus size woman options tailored to her curves at a moderate price point.

The 2021 Cultivate Awards winner, Melissa Mercedes
The 2021 Cultivate Awards winner, Melissa Mercedes

Quality in these fabrics are only a sidestep lower than their luxury counterparts, introducing innovative blends in fabrics, specific silhouettes inspired by the designer’s artistic inspiration, and, like its luxury designers, have more intricate detailing. These designers such as Baacal, Loud Bodies, Jibri, Monif C., Hilary MacMillan, Christian Omeshun, Melissa Mercedes, or Barkwood, are just a few who fall into this category.

Mass Market Plus Size Fashion and Fast Fashion:

Sometimes, some of these retailers produce items that are quick in its turnaround but with a better level of quality and price (moderate) or at a lower price point and lower life span (fast fashion).

In moderate plus size fashion, this segment varies greatly and usually retails for less than $150. Think of your Eloquii, Simply Be, Igigi, Gap, ASOS, Lane Bryant, and City Chic, all brands who produce fashion or carry collections a step above your fast fashion counterparts.

Items move fast, with highly fashionable items, mass-produced, but with a controlled access and definitive brand image.

Fast fashion garments are quickly produced product in a cost efficient manner, delivering high fashion looking garments, at the lowest price possible. With the ability to mass produce up-to-the-minute trends and incredulously low price points, fast fashion provides edgy, often directly inspired from design houses, looks that range from as low as a $10 price point up to a $150 price tag.

To be worn for the moment, the lifespan of these fast fashion fashions are intended to last for the current season. H&M, Forever 21, Shein and smaller online plus size boutiques like Chic and Curvy fall into this mix.

I bring up these online boutiques because of their rise in the online space. It is important to know that these online boutiques oftentimes buy from junior plus size fast fashion manufacturers whose sizing is cut differently from traditional plus sizes.

Discount Plus Size Fashion

The segment discount can sound a bit confusing but this serves its purpose. Usually looked at loss leaders, these retailers have quickly adapted to the fast fashion concepts leveraging their consumers buying power and reputation to fashion exclusive designer collections.

However, the division and classification of what to expect from these segments do not stop there. Challenging and changing the fashion climate over the last year, discount leaders have created strategic partnerships with Contemporary Designers to bring affordable fashions to the masses.

Retailers such as TJMaxx, Burlington, Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls and others bring plus size fashion at an affordable retail price.

While there are a few designers and retailers who straddle various segments and this is a loose guide to help you to understand these differences. Each segment both provides and serves its purpose in the ever diversifying industry of plus size fashion with the options we now have! It is all about learning about them!

NOW, it is all about these plus size fashion options.

It is important about knowing the differences in these segments so that you know what to expect when shopping a particular designer or retailer.  Learning the difference affords you the ease of a headache or frustration when shopping to put your best curve forward! Exciting right?

To find out more about any of the plus size designers mentioned in this article, please visit Plus Size Designers or read about them in the Plus Size Designers search results!

What do you think of this revised segmentation? Does this help you prepare for what to expect when you go shopping through all of those plus size fashion options?

Leave a comment and let’s chat about it!

Why do most clothing retailers stop their petite offerings (if they even provide them) at a size 10? That makes absolutely no sense considering the average American woman is 5’3″ and a size 16/18! As someone who is 5’3″ and has been a size 12-16 for all of her adult life, I decided to do some research and make a list of where to find petite plus size clothes over a size 10.

Below lists what I gathered. The linked names take you straight to their petite offerings and let you know what size they go up to. I was pleased to find so many retailers offering petite plus size clothes, and at a range of price points and styles as well.

A Few of Our Fave Petite Plus Size Places to Shop

As The Curvy Fashionista editors, we write about stuff we love and think you’ll like, too. We often use affiliate links, which means we receive a small share of the revenue from your purchase. This does not affect the amount you pay for the product in any way, shape, or form.

  • Alice Alexander is an ethical and sustainable clothing brand based in Philadelphia that goes up to a 4X/30 and offers Petites (as well as tall!).
  • American Eagle also offers shorts but not petite, and up to a size 24.  I have a few pairs of jeans from American Eagle in their short length and find them not too high in the rise; you can see them on me at this link.
  • Anthropologie has a surprisingly vast size range, and while they offer plus sizes, they only offer their petite selection up to 16P
  • ASOS offers petite up to size 22.  I’ve had mixed experiences with ASOS; like Old Navy the quality and sizing are inconsistent.  However, they are my go-to for things like what to wear to a bachelorette party, a cruise, a trip to Vegas, and other times you want fun clothes without spending an arm and a leg.
  • Banana Republic offers petite clothing up to a size 14.  This is my favorite petite retailer as the clothing fits my personal style aesthetic and I find their clothing curve-friendly in general.  I have several petite suits from them, pants, and dresses.  I have had mixed results with their jeans, they are sometimes too short in the rise and often still too long.  You can see all my looks featuring Banana Republic including the sizing I’m wearing at this link.
  • Catherine’s offers petite plus size clothing up to a 34WP.
  • Cato Fashions carries petite up to size 28 WP.
  • Chico’s carries petites up to size 22; please note they have a unique sizing format so a 4 is their largest.  I have a lot of clothes from Chico’s, you can see all my looks including sizing information at this link.  If in doubt, I find it’s better to size down with Chico’s.
  • Christopher and Banks offers petites up to size 16.
  • ELOQUII does not carry petite plus, but they have several styles of their pants available in short lengths in sizes 12W – 28W.  I found them still too long in the rise and hem for me, but I have friends who find they fit great.  It’s worth trying, especially their Kady pant.
  • eShakti doesn’t have petite per se, but you can have any of their styles hemmed for your height or custom-made to your unique measurements for a reasonable price.  eShakti offers clothing up to size 36. I haven’t yet tried the custom measurement, but know many readers have with great success.  However, I have ordered pieces with my height and found them to be the perfect length.  You can find all my eShakti reviews at this link.
  • Foxcroft makes great shirts (I find them very large bust-friendly), and they offer them up to a 16P.
  • Full Beauty offers petite plus sizes 12-44.
  • Gap also offers up to a size 20 in petite. I find them to be more consistent with their sizing and petite measurements.
  • HSN also has several styles available in petite up to 24 Plus Petite.
  • JC Penney offers petite and petite plus up to size 24
  • J. Crew isn’t extensive, but they do have petites up to a size 12.
  • J. Crew Factory also carries 12 petite.
  • J.Jill offers petites up to 18P; not only that, but almost every single one of their styles is available in petite.
  • Kohl’s offers petites up to size 18.
  • Lands’ End offers petite up to an XL/18 and petite plus up to a 3XP/26W.  If you’re looking for petite swimwear, petite outerwear, or just some great petite wardrobe basics, Lands’ End is a great choice.  I have several petite winter coats from the brand.  I also love that Lands’ End has extensive customer reviews to help you determine what size and style will be best for you.  You can see all the looks I own from Lands’ End, including sizing details at this link.
  • Lane Bryant has a selection of petite plus size and short clothing up to size 28.
  • L.L. Bean offers some of their selections in petite up to size 20.
  • LOFT offers petites up to a size 16.  I think LOFT is a great place for petite jeans and pants.
  • Macy’s has petite plus sizes for in-house brands and a couple of better-known retailers up to 28.  I previously reviewed Macy’s plus size petite collection.
  • Madewell offers a good portion of their collection in petite sizes up to 20.  Madewell is known for their jeans, which are really loved by those of all shapes and sizes.
  • M.M.LaFleur does not carry petites per se, but they do have a whole selection of petite-friendly styles, with most offered in sizes up to 22W. This is a great destination for elegant work separates.
  • Nordstrom has a variety of petite brands, with some offering up to a size 18.
  • Old Navy offers petites up to size 20.  I have had mixed experiences with Old Navy petites. They are lower cost, and I find the sizing inconsistent, but at least they do have a selection.
  • QVC offers petites up to size 28WP.  I haven’t ordered from QVC in a long while, so I don’t have any personal experience. I do appreciate their extensive size range, not just for clothing, but also for shoes.
  • Talbots offers not only petite up to XL/16 but petite plus up to 3XP/22XP.  Don’t discount Talbots as a place only for those who like a preppy or conservative aesthetic.  I love Talbots for great-fitting dresses, chic suits, and they’re one of my favorite places for well-fitting high-quality jeans. You can see all my looks featuring Talbots, including the size I wore, at this link.
  • Torrid may not carry an exclusive petites collection, but they do have an extensive denim selection and many are available in a length called “extra short.”
  • Universal Standard carries jeans in petite sizing up to size 40. I own a lot of clothing from Universal Standard and was even interviewed by them and featured in their video for their Petites clothing launch.  You can see all my looks wearing Universal Standard at this link.

It is amazing that in this day and age, with the average height and clothing size of the American woman, this list isn’t longer! Especially now as retailers are struggling to stay open, I am surprised more haven’t made an effort to embrace the variety of women’s sizes so they may remain successful. And I know those of you who are tall also struggle to find clothing in your size.

I can only hope that this year inspires retailers to stop looking to the past for what works and look to the current population and the success of those brands that have embraced a broader range of sizes and heights of customers.

I really hope this list isn’t exhaustive, and if new brands come on the scene I plan to update this list to keep it as a valuable resource for petites

The demand for gender-neutral fashion has skyrocketed as more transgender and plus size nonbinary people embrace their identity and look for new and expressive ways to share their gender – through fashion.

With this in mind, we wanted to offer seven styling tips for plus size non-binary people and brands that are doing gender-fluid fashion right!

Tip #1 – Go bold.

Plus size nonbinary bodies are powerful and meant to be seen and celebrated. For any look, you should feel dramatic, bold, and sexy as yourself. This is why we love Universal Standard: their sizing is inclusive, their website isn’t divided by gender, and they offer clothing modeled by folks of all genders and body types to help you best determine if a fit or style works for you!

Tip #2 – Get it tailored!

We miss opportunities to engage with clothes that we love because they don’t fit perfectly, or the stretch isn’t there, or this one part won’t lay flat. You deserve clothing that feels like it was custom-made for you. We love UnCommon closet, LLC based in Chicago, and Sweetlime Alterations, based out of Cleveland, Ohio, both queer-owned businesses that offer alterations for plus size nonbinary folks!

Tip #3 – Look for unique pieces you can alter!

In our research, we found many transfemmes and plus size nonbinary folks rely on sites like Ebay and Amazon to find unique plus size looks they can alter or tailor to their needs. It can be hard to find affordable, plus size clothes in stores, and online shopping offers a safe way for folks to shop and try on clothes!

Tip #4 – Mix and match styles

Vintage shops can be super helpful in finding those one-of-a-kind pieces, but they aren’t always size-inclusive. This is why we recommend researching small businesses like Sparkhaus Vintage, based out of Green Bay, Wisconsin, that regularly stock plus size clothes for all genders!

Tip #5 – Dress for you, and your comfort

For plus size nonbinary folks that might bind or are looking to minimize their chest, it can be hard to find a plus size binder. We recommend binding safely by shopping at brands like Shapeshifters, who make custom binders for folks of all genders. We also love TomboyX for undergarments, including swimwear, packer-friendly bottoms, and period underwear.

Tip #6 – When in doubt, go for the v-neck.

Chests are sexy and gender-neutral! We love an unbuttoned collar, and any t-shirt is a v-neck if you have scissors. An open-neck look can be comfortable and sexy for any plus size nonbinary folks who want to feel good in their skin, which is why we are so inspired by Alok Vaid-Menon and their exploration of fashion as a gender-non-conforming artist and model.

Tip #7 – Embrace new styles

Many plus size nonbinary folks may struggle to try clothes on in stores because shopping through gendered clothing sections can be frustrating and stressful. We love using Stitch Fix to try out new styles and find bold new looks that are delivered right to your home, where you can safely and comfortably try on new styles, and return the ones you don’t love!

The future of fashion is inclusive clothing for folks of all genders and sizes because everybody is worth celebrating. If you’re looking for more plus-size brands, we recommend you check out this article, by Alysse Dalessandro Santiago: “Here are 10 LGBTQ+ owned brands that offer plus sizes!
