On September 14th, Brooklyn buzzed with excitement as MEFeater hosted its second annual #NYFW Fashion Girl Summit, a vibrant gathering celebrating the creativity of Gen Z and Millennial fashion enthusiasts. The event attracted the crème de la crème of New York City’s fashion, entertainment, and corporate creative realms, all united under the empowering theme, “Creativity is Your Superpower.” The choice of Industry City as the venue added a chic, sophisticated touch that perfectly matched MEFeater’s It Girl vibe.

A Celebration of Community and Style at the Fashion Girl Summit

Attendees at the Fashion Girl Summit were treated to a series of dynamic speakers, thought-provoking panels, and unique activations that only MEFeater can deliver. Returning sponsors like the renowned hair brand Mielle Organics and new industry power players, including Denman, Vaseline, and Dr. Bronner’s, along with alcohol partners Luc Belaire, Deacon Whisky, Tuck Gin, and Bumbu Rum elevated the summit experience, showcasing the event’s focus on empowerment and creativity.

Mielle Organics brought a pop of vibrancy with their signature Mielle-pink activation, complete with the empowering slogan, “From One Queen to Another.” This immersive experience not only celebrated beauty and sisterhood but also provided the perfect backdrop for social media moments.

Guests left with exclusive goodie bags filled with Mielle’s coveted haircare products, ensuring they had the essentials to maintain their crowns. The excitement continued at the exclusive VIP afterparty, ‘Club Pink,’ where select guests and celebrities mingled in a stylish celebration.

Elevating the Beauty Experience

Denman Brush added another layer of glamour to the summit with an exclusive beauty touch-up station featuring double-sided “glam” mirrors framed by classic lights, alongside their latest “Pink Crush” collection of brushes. This chic space allowed attendees to refresh their hair and makeup throughout the day, ensuring they remained camera-ready amidst the summit’s festivities.

Vaseline took the experience to new heights with its branded Media Room, a vibrant hub for influencers, press, and creators to connect and capture content.

The interactive displays showcased Vaseline’s commitment to empowering beauty and creativity, making it a highlight of the summit. Vaseline’s latest Radiant X collection took center stage at MEFeater’s #NYFW Fashion Girl Summit. Guests posed and gushed over the collection.

Insightful Conversations

The Fashion Girl Summit also featured insightful panels led by industry leaders, including MEFeater’s own CEO, Gabrielle Amani Williams. In a candid conversation with Cleotrapa, Williams explored the nuances of creativity in the industry during the session titled “The Pivot: Creativity is Your Superpower.”

Other notable panelists included YouTube influencer Allyiah’s Face, ID Magazine’s Business Director Denrise Williams, and designer Reema Idris. The event was expertly hosted by popular beauty artist and content creator, Taylor Mitchell, with phenomenal moderation by digital creator Nneoma and content creator Armiel Chandler.

How could there not be any reasons why we love Da’Vine Joy Randolph?

You may have been introduced to her through the 2012 Broadway production “Ghost” when she portrayed the Tony-nominated psychic Oda Mae Brown. Perhaps it was her 2019 breakout role in the Eddie Murphy-led film “Dolemite Is My Name” as Lady Reed or 2020’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” as Roslyn. Maybe it was even Hulu’s comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” as Donna Williams or last year’s blockbuster “The Holdovers” as grieving cafeteria manager Mary Lamb.

As a plus size woman of color, Randolph’s road to success hasn’t been the easiest. Despite the barriers, she continues to boldly beat the odds in an industry that often tries to quiet big, marginalized individuals. The 38-year-old star brought us all to our feet with a standing ovation after winning “Best Supporting Actress” for “The Holdovers” effort at the 2024 Oscars.

“For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different. And, now, I realize… I just need to be myself,” the Philadelphia native gushed in her tearful acceptance speech. “I thank you for seeing me. Ron Van Lieu, I thank you! When I was the only Black girl in that class, when you saw me, and you told me I was enough! And when I told you, ‘I don’t see myself,’ you said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to forge our own path. You’re going to lay a trail for yourself.'”

These are the top things we adore about “The Lost City” phenomenon.

Sis is well-educated and degreed!

Randolph spent most of her younger years preparing for the center stage. From attending the Interlochen Center Arts Camp to studying classical vocal performance and opera (later musical theatre) at Temple University, she knew she was destined for worldwide acclaim. Following her time at Temple, Randolph went to the Yale School of Drama and graduated with her master’s degree in 2011. Additionally, she even studied Shakespeare at the University of Oxford.

She never misses in the style department.

Randolph has yet to back down from an opportunity to show up and show out YET. Her fashion sense is immaculate, and every look is on point! If you didn’t know, she has an exclusive glam team of around nine people who are responsible for her award-winning ensembles.

In an interview with Variety, she told the outlet that she likes to have fun with her style, and clothing is a way of self-expression for her as well. Randolph shared, “You know why I love clothes so much? Because it’s connected to one’s personality and sense of self. You don’t have to be as obsessive about it as I am, but I think it’s a good practice of self-love, too.”

Her personal life is pretty private.

What she doesn’t show, you won’t know! And that’s certainly an admirable trait about Randolph! Whereas we live in an age where social media is the new diary, the Pennsylvanian hasn’t offered much about Da’Vine behind the scenes. As far as we know, she’s serious about her craft, likes to step on a few necks with her fashion choices, and is good at winning awards. That’s it… for now.

When it comes to boos or babies, it appears that Randolph is in her single season, but we could be wrong. The Hollywood beauty isn’t that active on the internet either, which is understandable because she stays BOOKED and BUSY!

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a multi-talented woman.

As we know, Randolph is a performer of all trades. Before she’d gotten bitten by the acting bug, singing was her first love. When on stage accepting her Academy Award, Randolph confessed that her mother had given her the push she needed to see beyond that.

“God is so good. You know, I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer,” she recounted to the audience. “My mother said to me, ‘Go across that street, to that theater department. There’s something for you there.’ And I thank my mother for doing that!”

Aside from tearing down the Broadway stage, Randolph lent her powerhouse voice to “The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show’s” official soundtrack in 2015. Clearly, she’s true to this — not new to this!

Despite her many accolades, she remains humble.

Randolph has won an Academy Award, AAFCA Award, Astra Film Award, Black Reel Award(s), British Academy Film Award, and Golden Globe Award, among others. But… although her work has earned her some important accomplishments, the passionate creative prides herself on keeping her humility.

“There’s a trophy in my house now, but I’m not different. You can’t come from Philadelphia and be changed; they won’t let you. This will be who I am. The roles will get better; the money will improve, the lines will get better,” she explained to Variety after her Oscar win. “I hope to make a legacy and leave an imprint with this career. I hope my work will matter and it will be something that people of all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, and genders can connect to. But me, and the soul of me, won’t change.”

Today, August 15th, is the launch date for a spectacular new fashion and beauty collection celebrating Barbie’s 65th anniversary. This isn’t just any launch; it’s a historic collaboration that brings together five dynamic, female-led Canadian brands to pay tribute to Barbie’s iconic style and influence over the decades. Let’s dive into what makes this collection so special and why it’s more than just a nod to fashion history—it’s a celebration of women empowerment and creative synergy.

In an unprecedented move, Mattel has partnered with five trailblazing female-founded brands: Hilary MacMillan, ai, Paris Jewellers Canada, Cheekbone Beauty, and Sol Kyst. This collaboration represents an industry first, melding these brands’ unique perspectives to create a collection that spans Barbie’s six-decade legacy. From chic jewelry and makeup to stylish ready-to-wear pieces, this collection is a testament to the power of women supporting women.

“We’re celebrating Barbie’s incredible 65-year journey and her role as a fashion icon and symbol of empowerment,” says Jennifer Gileno, head of licensing and retail development at Mattel Canada. “This collection is a reminder of what we can achieve when we unite our strengths and break new ground in the fashion and beauty industries.”

The collection features eight cohesive looks that draw inspiration from some of Barbie’s most memorable dolls, each representing a different decade. Picture the classic 1959 Barbie in her timeless attire, the playful 1960s Twist ‘N Turn, the bold 1970s Superstar, and the stylish 1980s Black Barbie and Totally Crystal Barbie. The 1990s Totally Hair Barbie is also represented, bringing together ready-to-wear outfits, accessories, jewelry, and beauty products that perfectly capture the essence of each era.

Colors and designs pay homage to Barbie’s iconic style—from the original black-and-white chevron of 1959 to the vibrant pinks and oranges of the 1980s and the textured greens and cherry reds of the 1990s. This collection isn’t just a walk down memory lane; it’s a celebration of how far fashion has come.

Empowering Through Collaboration

In a historically competitive industry, these five female-led brands have come together to champion inclusivity, diversity, and women’s empowerment. Each brand brings its unique vision to the collection, creating a tapestry of designs that are both innovative and reflective of their individual values.

By now, we’re sure everyone’s wondering… who is Sara Milliken? The 23-year-old plus size pageant beauty made headlines when she took home the National American Miss Alabama title this past May. Since then, Milliken’s name has been a showstopper globally, as her story and statement have proven to be the most applaudable yet.

With a core message of image acceptance, the National American Miss program focuses on confidence-building, real-world skills, and empowering mentorship for young girls/ladies ages 4 to 24.

Not too long after her controversial win, the committee wrote of their experience working with Milliken, “For decades, National American Miss ‘NAM’ has proudly celebrated all young women. This year in Alabama, Sara captivated the selection panel with her clear communication, poise on state, and extensive community service. Her message of body positivity and emphasis on never giving up on your goals is inspiring.”

Who Is Sara Milliken — All About Her Newfound Fame

At the tender age of 15, the Atmore, Alabama native received an open call letter from National American Miss and knew instantly that it was something she wanted to try out for. However, after two failed attempts, a defeated Milliken could only wonder if the third time would be a charm–and it was. The self-love activist was promoted to ‘Top 5’ before eventually earning the 2024 crown.

“I hope that [potential contestants will] learn that… no matter what your body looks like, no matter where you come from, you can do anything that you set your mind to,” she told WKRG. “I didn’t think that it was possible for a plus size girl to win. I didn’t think it was possible for a girl from small-town Alabama to win.”

According to Milliken, this time around, she spent a long 365 days preparing for the honorable competition. So, to make it as far as she did was a mind-blower for the Southern Belle.

She wrote in an Instagram post, “I blacked out after top 10. I had never placed before at a NAM state pageant. All the emotions because I knew no matter what happened I was better than my last performance. Somewhere between Top 10 and Top 5 and outgoing queen had ‘A Moment like This’ as her farewell song and it hit me. I truly had waited a lifetime for this moment.”

The Controversy Behind Sara Milliken’s Barrier-Breaking Win

Following Milliken’s victory, naysayers accused the National American Miss of “celebrating obesity.” The backlash came after the mental health advocate’s interview aired on WKRG and fellow publications picked up the groundbreaking story.

“The pageant called Milliken a ‘trailblazer’ and a ‘gorgeous legend’ after her crowning. If we are to be honest, we all know that Milliken is neither a pioneer nor an innovator,” writer Gillian Thorp cruelly penned in an article on Medium. “When a significant portion of our population is obese, you can’t call someone a trailblazer for merely existing in that state.”

“Let’s be honest with ourselves,” Facebook critic Scott Eckles dropped in WKRG’s comment section. “She’s extremely unhealthy and this is a slap in the face to the young girls who have worked hard and maintained a diet to actually be a beauty queen.”

Despite the odds against her, the rising model continues to flourish. Although the disgusting remarks bothered Milliken initially, she didn’t let them for long.

What Is the NAM Queen Doing Now?

Milliken’s viral sit-down with the outlet reportedly garnered over 2,000 followers (collectively) and brought in a slew of sponsorship offers for NAM’s national pageant in Orlando later this year. It appears that she’s now gearing up for that, which is set to take place during Thanksgiving week.

Additionally, Milliken has rebranded her podcast, formerly titled Girls Gotta Glow, under a new name: Watch Me Org. The premise of the digital production will be “promoting body positivity and self-expression,” the Instagram bio reads.

She also runs an initiative in support of elders with cognitive disorders called The Buddy System.

Where is Whitney Thompson now?

The Florida native made history when she became the first-ever plus size winner of Tyra Banks’ classic reality competition, America’s Next Top Model, in 2008. Thompson (aka Forrester) won cycle 10 of the hit CW series and had one of the most memorable runs on the show.

Known for her “pageant-like” modeling style, Thompson beat Anya Kop in the finale. The prize package included a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, a feature story in Seventeen magazine, and a deal with Elite Model Management. On average, over four million viewers were reportedly tuning in every episode.

Thompson’s victory reached national news, as the then-20-year-old took the fashion industry by storm. However, it appears that Thompson’s lifestyle is now vastly different from her runway days.

Let’s get into what she’s been up to over the years.

Thompson’s Life After America’s Next Top Model

Following the success of “America’s Next Top Model,” Thompson was named one of MSNBC’s “Most Influential Women of the Year” in 2008. In 2009, she launched her candle and jewelry line, SUPERMODEL. Thompson also became a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorders Association in 2010. She is credited as the character Faith in a few episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Motion Comic.”

Additionally, she garnered quite a buzz when posing nude for the National Organizations for Women’s 5th Annual Love Your Body Day promotional campaign that same year, alongside the event’s creator, Chenese Lewis.

According to research, Thompson spent a great deal of the late 2000s and early 2010s doing philanthropy work, building her brand outside of “America’s Next Top Model,” and motivational speaking at college campuses.

In a 2011 interview published by HuffPost, when discussing the state of her cutthroat profession and if it were “good for people” overall, the Forever 21 model said, “Modeling is a terrible job. It’s not so much for me anymore because I got stubborn with it and I’ve kind of made my own decisions.”

“I am a ‘bad’ model if you will. [laughs] I went back to being brunette and I live where I want to live,” she told HuffPost. “And I work with who I want to work with and that’s kind of what I do because I got tired of being told what to do which is not what models are supposed to do.”

In 2020, Thompson appeared on Bravo’s “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” and longtime fans were overjoyed to see the beauty back on their TV screens. Aside from her on-camera resurgence, life for the fashionista has pivoted.

Thompson owns Pink Pelican Ice Cream in Panama City Beach, Florida, where they are praised for selling the “finest ice cream and fudge.” She’s also a mother and has been married since 2014 (Ian Forrester). The now-36-year-old’s dress-shopping experience was featured in Season 1 of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress.”

Thompson is a vegan and world traveler.

Hey, curvy besties! So, usually, I love to sit and talk with you all about fun topics, but today, we have a big bone to pick with reality TV and its lack of representation of plus size contestants on dating shows.

Like ew, David…catch up!

Reality TV Continues To Miss The Mark

Reality TV, especially dating shows, often miss the mark. While striving to reflect society, they stumble over inclusivity. Be it plus size contestants, Black contestants, or those with other diverse backgrounds, reality TV has a skewed representation. These shows are guilty of portraying a narrow vision of love and attractiveness. They set unrealistic beauty standards that exclude so many of us. And it’s time we talked about why plus size contestants on dating shows are almost non-existent. Do plus size contestants not deserve the chance to find love on TV?

When plus-size viewers tune into dating shows, they don’t see themselves. Instead, they see a parade of smaller, conventionally attractive people finding love. I love that for smaller sizes, but what about us? This lack of representation sends a damaging message: that plus-size individuals are not worthy of romance. It’s disheartening and unfair. And the rare times they bring an ounce of diversity to our screen, the show itself wants to be praised. Reality TV should inspire and entertain, but it often falls short for those who don’t fit the mold.

When a plus size contestant appears, their portrayal often focuses on weight. It’s as if their size is their only trait. Society deems anyone above a certain size as unhealthy, even if that’s not the case and was proven not to be the case. After the show, there’s immense pressure on these contestants to lose weight. Their worth becomes tied to their size rather than their personality or qualities.

This obsession with weight loss is damaging. It implies that a plus-size contestant’s primary goal should be to become thinner. We need to break this cycle. Plus size contestants on dating shows deserve to be there for love, not just as token figures or weight loss stories.

Let’s look at some dating shows that need to do better:

The Bachelor

The Bachelor” is notorious for its lack of body diversity. Season after season, the cast is full of conventionally attractive, thin people. There was some hope when “The Bachelorette” featured Luke Pell, who had a more muscular build. But he wasn’t exactly plus size, and the show didn’t dive deeper into body diversity. It’s time for “The Bachelor” franchise to embrace more inclusive casting.

Love Island

“Love Island” is another culprit. The show prides itself on drama and romance but fails to include plus size contestants. The focus remains on chiseled bodies and bikinis. The closest they got was with contestants Alexandra Cane and Anna Vakili. Cane, who has since become a natural body healing coach and trauma-informed healer, faced immense pressure to conform. Furthermore, fans were outraged when Vakili, considered plus size, represented one spectrum of curvy. Yes, they count as representation, but don’t reflect the full diversity of plus size bodies. We need contestants who have more rolls or “more to love.”

OWN’s Ready To Love

I am personally in the middle with this next show because they have plenty of Black representation, which I love; however, they do not have that much plus size representation. OWN’s “Ready To Love” is a show that’s closer to getting it right. It showcases a beautiful representation of Black people and plus size contestants (only two, I believe). The show demonstrates that love and attraction come in all shapes and sizes. However, it remains an exception in an industry that largely ignores plus size individuals.

A Call To Action

We need more plus size contestants on dating shows. They aren’t just good enough for weight loss shows or as rare exceptions. They deserve to feel seen, to find love, and to be celebrated for who they are. Reality TV can do better. The portrayal on these platforms shapes societal views and personal self-worth. Plus size individuals are not secondary characters in the story of love. They are the main characters, too.

So, reality TV, it’s time to step up. Plus size contestants on dating shows need to be a norm, not a novelty. We all deserve a shot at winning someone’s heart and having ours won. Let’s push for more inclusivity and show the world that love truly knows no size.

Representation matters. For instance, seeing plus size TV characters with diverse experiences and body types can profoundly impact viewers. It’s about feeling seen, understood, and validated. Whether it’s plus size visibility, Black characters, or LGBTQ+ representation, seeing oneself reflected on screen can foster a sense of belonging and empowerment.

When it comes to plus size characters specifically, their presence on screen can challenge stereotypes and promote body positivity. These characters don’t always have to revolve around their weight to exude “main character energy.” Instead, their depth, complexity, and relatability make them compelling protagonists in their own right.
