Superstar models of my youth are gracing the covers of the big magazines and walking in many of the shows. Elder actresses are walking shows and being featured in advertising, too. Marvelous. Almost. These older models and actresses are also always commented on for how age-defyingly fit and youthful-looking they are.

I’m a ‘mature’ large-sized model, and in conversation with my agent at Ford Models in New York, I found out that I’m the only one in North America.

Let me repeat: I’m the only one.
And I’m not getting booked.

I’m good with not getting booked because another model fits the casting brief better, but I’m the only one. So, if there were a casting brief, I would be the only one to choose from. Ipso facto, there is no casting brief for a mature, large-sized model.

Why?

We may have an old-woman-at-the-top problem here — specifically, the women in charge of the fashion business.

Big, voluptuous young bodies are great, but I have the sneaking suspicion that big, voluptuous old bodies are seen as having been Let go.  Unappealing.  Maybe even a little shameful.

Being old and large-size, it seems, is bumping up against those unwell stereotypes we were raised with, the unconscious, ingrained, generational, and tired, anorexic aesthetics of heroin chic.

I believe that we (old women) are so deeply ingrained with these stereotypes that we can’t see ourselves with the same grace and empathy that we see others. Instead, we lament our aging bodies and lost youth — and my cohort is actually in charge of the fashion world.

The fashion industry has the power to show our daughters and granddaughters that authentic grace and beauty can exist for aging women.

We have the same moral obligation to demonstrate that being beautiful while being old comes in as many shapes and sizes, ethnicities, and quirks as it does while being young.

I think it’s time for the old women at the top to wake up, show some empathy — to themselves first — and then fight for some grace for the rest of us by wielding their power for cultural good.  Write the casting brief. Start with New York Fashion Week.

For our culture to be well, we need to see an authentic range of role models of aging.

If there’s one thing we love at The Curvy Fashionista, it’s seeing fashion that empowers. So when the plus-size-positive movie Empire Waist hit our radar, we couldn’t help but fall in love with how it portrayed the beauty, confidence, and power that comes with owning your style, regardless of size.

And who better to talk about this than the costume designer herself, Francesca Roth? We sat down with the film’s costume designer to get the inside scoop on how she worked her magic to bring the film’s characters to life—wardrobe first, of course!

Dressing for Confidence—With a Side of Magic

Francesca Roth didn’t just dress the characters of Empire Waist—she empowered them. Roth shares how the costumes were more than just clothes; they were transformative tools that helped the cast embody their roles, and sometimes, even reshape how they felt about their own bodies. “I think it becomes a space that helps turn a personal discomfort into confidence,” she says. That’s the magic of costume design.

Whether it’s a pair of jeans that work perfectly for Marcy (played by Daisy Washington), who uses a wheelchair, or the iconic final dress worn by Lenore (played by Mia Kaplan), Roth ensures that each look represents both the character’s personality and their growth throughout the film.

And the challenges? Roth didn’t shy away from those either. “The challenge is that most clothes today are made for such a narrow range of idealized body types,” she notes. Sound familiar, fashion lovers? Empire Waist faced these hurdles head-on, showing the reality of finding clothes that actually fit and flatter in an industry still playing catch-up with inclusivity.

A Cast as Diverse as the Wardrobe

A Chat with Empire Waist Costume Designer, Francesca Roth

We’ve got to talk about that gorgeous and diverse cast. With so many different body types, Roth had her work cut out for her. But, like the pro she is, she took it all in stride. She revealed that a lot of the magic came from understanding how each actor moved through the world and how they expressed themselves through style. “I lean into their style and personality as strengths to make their character more dynamic,” she says.

The end result? A range of wardrobe pieces that felt true to the characters—and, most importantly, that felt authentic to the actors wearing them.

Take Kayla, for example, who gets her Clueless-inspired debut outfit. Roth shares how the over-the-top plaid skirt and faux-fur coat were pieced together from not one, but two skirts sewn together to accommodate sizing. Roth’s flexibility and ingenuity highlight the real struggle of finding on-trend, plus size clothes that fit properly. But the finished product? Pure gold!

Designing for the Plus Size Body—It’s All About the Fit

One of Roth’s key opportunities in Empire Waist was dressing plus size bodies in a way that was both defining and narratively impactful. “Often there’s a discrepancy between the sizes we think we should wear and what size we actually need,” she shares. Oh, Francesca, we feel that struggle!

A Chat with Empire Waist Costume Designer, Francesca Roth

BTS of Fitting for the film

Roth took the time to get to know each actor, asking about their measurements, their favorite brands, and how they personally feel about their bodies. This meticulous attention to detail ensured that every costume not only fit but flattered.

The Iconic Looks: From “Clueless” Homage to the Showstopper Dress

When it came to dressing plus size characters, Roth made sure that each outfit felt intentional and empowering. The solution to ill-fitting garments? Alterations, alterations, alterations! And let’s just say, Kayla’s two-skirt combo was far from the only example of Roth getting creative with a needle and thread.

Okay, we couldn’t talk to Roth without fangirling over some of the film’s most iconic looks. Her personal favorite? Kayla’s Clueless-inspired ensemble that was both dramatic and so true to her character’s arc. “It’s Kayla’s ‘Clueless’ moment,” Roth gushes, citing Mona May, the legendary designer behind the original Clueless costumes. Finding a colorful faux-fur coat during a pandemic wasn’t easy, but Roth pulled it off.

And then, there’s the pièce de résistance: Lenore’s final dress. This custom-made beauty is the epitome of character development, representing Lenore’s journey toward self-love. Designed with a metallic pastel fabric, it was created in just five days, but the impact? Chef’s kiss.

As Roth puts it, “The dress is meant to represent Lenore’s growth toward loving herself and accepting her body.” And if you ask us, that’s exactly what it does.

Indie Designers, Are You Listening?

Plus size indie designers, take note! Roth is on the lookout for you. While the costume department often turns to big-box retailers for ease and quick returns, she encourages indie designers to slide into her inbox. “Never underestimate the power of the cold email,” she says, offering a cheeky wink to up-and-coming designers.

Roth keeps a list of designers and brands she loves and would be happy to reach out when the right project comes along. So, if you’ve got a unique, size-inclusive line, what are you waiting for? Closed mouths don’t get fed… right?

Empire Waist isn’t just a film about fashion, body positivity, or high school drama—it’s about all of these things and more. And Francesca Roth’s costume design brought this story to life in a way that only a true visual storyteller could. Through her dedication to making every character’s wardrobe feel authentic and empowering, Roth ensured that Empire Waist isn’t just a movie. It’s a movement.

For our fellow Curvy Fashionistas out there looking to express yourselves, take a page out of Roth’s playbook: be unapologetic, get creative, and, as Roth would say, if you love it—don’t hesitate!

What do you think of Francesca Roth’s work in Empire Waist? Are you excited to see the film’s stylish take on body positivity? Let us know in the comments!

Finding the perfect bra has long been a challenge for plus size women. Often, the struggle isn’t just about finding bras that fit—it’s about discovering lingerie that combines comfort, support, and honestly, that is cute. CUUP, a brand celebrated for redefining minimalist intimates with a modern approach to undergarments, is stepping up to the plate with a much-anticipated expansion into plus sizes.

We have often been an afterthought in the lingerie industry, relegated to overly practical, matronly designs. But CUUP aims to change that narrative by offering pieces that exude sophistication and modernity.

CUUP extended sizes

Their new extended band range, which now includes sizes band sizes up through a 46-50E cup, is here to shake things up for plus size women. And we at The Curvy Fashionista couldn’t be more excited to explore what this means for us.

Right on the heels of the Eloquii acquisition, Full Beauty acquired CUUP in July 2023. Expanding their size ranges was only a natural next step into the plus size lingerie space. At a time where Savage Fenty disrupted inclusive lingerie, where Victoria’s Secret has stumbled their inclusive entry, outside of Cacique, Torrid, and the handful of plus size lingerie designers and brands, there have been limited plus size lingerie and bra options.

Meet CUUP: A New Option Expanding into Plus Size Bras
Image via Brand

And we are always here for more options… right? Now we must note, not all of the collection is available in the expanded size range. It is a strategic roll out. Not only do you have options in bras, but this also includes sizes expansion into the matching panties, loungewear and lingerie up to a 3X or size 8. Exciting, AND it is on us to make sure that we share with you what to know and expect from this size expansion at CUUP!

From Sleek to Sexy: CUUP’s Minimalist Approach Meets Inclusive Sizing

CUUP has built a name for itself by embracing the less-is-more philosophy in lingerie. Their designs are stripped of unnecessary padding, over-the-top embellishments, and restrictive wires that often come at the expense of comfort.

Meet CUUP: A New Option Expanding into Plus Size Bras

Instead, CUUP focuses on sleek, modern aesthetics with materials that celebrate the natural shape and beauty of women’s bodies. Their entry into plus size lingerie is not just a win for inclusivity but also for those of us who want to look and feel amazing—without sacrificing comfort or support.

CUUP’s expansion into larger band sizes is more than just an extended range. It signals a thoughtful approach to plus size lingerie, designed with us in mind. The brand’s signature styles—like their best-selling Balconette, Plunge, and Scoop bras—now come in extended band sizes, ensuring that we can experience the CUUP difference.

Meet CUUP: A New Option Expanding into Plus Size Bras

The plunge neckline or the balconette’s delicate structure are perfect examples of bras that make you feel supported and sexy without compromising on style. And since the pandemic, many of us have backed away from underwires and uncomfortable styles. This expansion is perfectly timed!

But it’s not just about adding more sizes—it’s about perfecting those sizes for the unique needs of plus size bodies. CUUP’s bras are designed to eliminate some of the most common frustrations we’ve faced: pinching bands, uncomfortable underwire, and unsupportive cups. Their bras are made with lightweight, breathable fabrics that conform to the body’s natural curves, ensuring that your bra works *with* you, not against you.

Meet CUUP: A New Option Expanding into Plus Size Bras
Image via Brand

With the use of innovative materials like power mesh and micro-modal, CUUP manages to strike the perfect balance between lightweight and supportive—something that’s been sorely lacking in the plus size lingerie world. It’s refreshing to see a brand that understands that plus size women don’t need more padding or bulk—we just need bras that are thoughtfully engineered to function, fit, and support.

The Best of Both Worlds with CUUP: Comfort and Confidence

CUUP believes that confidence starts with a good foundation, and their bras are the ultimate base layer to any outfit. Whether you’re looking for something to wear under a power suit, a casual tee, or a daring date-night dress, CUUP has you covered—literally and figuratively.

Meet CUUP: A New Option Expanding into Plus Size Bras
Image via Brand

In a world where plus size lingerie options are often limited to neutral, uninspired designs, CUUP’s extended range is quite welcomed. Their color palette—featuring soft neutrals, muted tones, and the occasional pop of bold color—means you can find something that suits your personal style, whether you’re all about classic black or daring red.

Shop the NEW extended size range at ShopCUUP.com

As CUUP expands its offerings to include larger band sizes, it’s clear that they are serious about inclusivity. This new size range (44F-44G, 46C-46G, 48C-48F, 50C-50E) is a step (because they still have room to be more inclusive) in the right direction for the plus size community, proving that high-quality, stylish lingerie isn’t exclusive to smaller sizes.

Their approach shows that they’ve done their homework, addressing the unique fit needs of plus size women while delivering on style.

For those of us who have spent years searching for bras that fit well, feel great, and look fabulous, CUUP’s foray into plus size lingerie feels hopeful. Gone are the days of choosing between comfort and style—CUUP’s bras allow you to have the best of both worlds. We can experience the same luxury and attention to detail that CUUP has long offered in their core sizing, and it’s about damn time.

Happy Humpday! Let’s talk about the unsung hero of your anatomy: the A-spot. Now, I know that you are probably tilting your head and are like… “don’t you mean the G-Spot?” Oh noooo… There is a whole other spot to explore! The A-spot, also known as the anterior fornix erogenous zone (AFE), this hidden gem, is nestled deep inside the vagina, and promises a whole new world of pleasure!

If you’ve never heard of it, or simply haven’t given it much thought, you’re not alone. So when the folks at LELO shared with us their newest product that both centers and celebrates the A-spot, we knew we had to ask more questions, dive a little deeper, and find out more about BOTH the A-spot and this new innovation in sexual wellness, the LELO Enigma, AND this hard-to-reach area, that is getting its time to shine— for good reason.

The A-spot and LELO Enigma sonic

Because we are not experts here, we had the chance to chat with LELO Sexpert and Certified Sex Therapist, Casey Tanner, to better help us understand what the A-spot is, how a tool like the LELO Enigma can help us reach this new-to-us location, and share a few tips.

For those seeking “profound pleasure,” understanding the this erogenous zone and the tools designed to stimulate it, like the LELO Enigma Double Sonic, can offer a new, exciting dimension to your sexual experience.  And since we are all about sexual wellness and empowerment, we thought to chat a bit about this interesting news!

So, What Exactly is the A-Spot?

The A-spot is an area of heightened sensitivity located deep in the vagina, between the cervix and bladder, about two inches beyond the G-spot. This zone, sometimes referred to as the female prostate, is known for its ability to enhance vaginal lubrication and its connection to vaginal orgasms.

The A-spot and LELO Enigma sonic
Image via Brand

So first, we need to know more about this sensitive area. Tanner shares, “Also known as the anterior fornix erogenous zone (AFE), this erogenous zone can be stimulated through deep penetration angled slightly toward the belly button with fingers, a toy, or a penis.  Research suggests that stimulating this spot can promote more lubrication, make foreplay more pleasurable, and increase the chances of reaching orgasm.”

Unlike the G-spot, which is often celebrated for its role in orgasm, this new-to-us erogenous zone doesn’t always get the same recognition— until now.

For those who haven’t experienced a vaginal orgasm, it does make one wonder if the A-spot could be the missing piece of the puzzle. And what better way to explore this erogenous zone than with a tool specifically designed to reach it, like the LELO Enigma Double Sonic?

We have learned that the beauty of the A-spot lies not just in its ability to bring physical pleasure, but also in the profound emotional release it can induce.

Here to Help You Find that A-spot, Meet the LELO Enigma Double Sonic

Okay, so now that we know WHAT the A-spot is, the quest goes now into finding it. We are not going to tell you about the A-spot without chatting about the discovery that brought us here in the first place!

The LELO Enigma is giving us main character energy. We learned that LELO’s Enigma Double Sonic is a game-changer for anyone looking to stimulate this erogenous zone. With double sonic wave stimulation, it targets both the G-spot and the clitoris simultaneously, but it doesn’t stop there.

From the site, this device features a “sonic tip at the top of its insertable arm that emits waves directly to the A-spot, creating vaginal orgasms of intense magnitude.” But it doesn’t stop there!

The Enigma also provides dual sonic wave stimulation for the clitoris and G-spot, offering a trifecta of sensations. The ability to stimulate all three areas simultaneously makes this product a standout, providing a level of pleasure that goes beyond traditional toys.

Talk about triple stimulation at your fingertips!

Navigating the A-spot as a Plus-Sized Person

Now, we did wonder if being plus-sized had any impact or if there were any specific nuances for plus size bodies. Tanner confidently shared that “The angle required to reach the A-spot varies slightly depending on body type, pelvic structure, and arousal.  From-behind sex positions, such as doggy style or spooning, can make it easier to access the A-spot if you and/or a partner is plus-sized.”

Good to know.

But where we get even more curious is wondering how plus size partners can maximize the dual sensation that the LELO Enigma Double Sonic provides. With this question, Tanner shares,The LELO ENIGMA Double Sonic has a flexible arm that allows you to custom-tailor its position to the size and shape of your body.” We appreciate this feature.

Tanner continues on to share that, “If holding a toy in place for long periods of time becomes physically uncomfortable, you can help the LELO Enigma stay in place on its own by shifting onto your stomach after insertion.  From there, you can utilize the movements of your pelvis to massage both your clitoris and G-spot, rather than relying on your hands.

Because the LELO ENIGMA Double Sonic pairs with an app, you don’t have to worry about accessing hard-to-reach places in order to adjust the speed or intensity of the sensations.”

Well, that is extremely thoughtful and considerate.

While we had Tanner’s attention, we had to ask and inquire about any recommended techniques or modifications for plus size folks to ensure comfort and ease when using a device like the LELO Enigma, particularly for extended play sessions.

Tanner gave us 6 succinct tips:

  1. Use lower back support, such as a supportive pillow or wedge
  2. Use your thighs to hold LELO Enigma in place
  3. Use LELO ENIGMA Double Sonic on your belly, instead of on your back
  4. Take advantage of the LELO ENIGMA Double Sonic remote control
  5. Use plenty of lubrication
  6. Take breaks or change positions

The LELO Enigma combines external and internal pleasure in ways many plus size people can appreciate. Since every body is different, the Enigma’s flexible design and custom-tailored settings allow for a fit that feels just right, regardless of body type.

Plus, with the added bonus of app control, you can tweak the settings without having to reposition yourself awkwardly—yes, convenience is sexy!

The Power of Lubricants

Lubricants play a critical role in maximizing the effectiveness of toys like the LELO Enigma. For plus size individuals, using a high-quality, water-based lube is essential to ensuring smooth, comfortable insertion and preventing irritation.

Lubrication can make or break your experience, especially when using a device like the LELO Enigma. For plus size women, where skin friction can be a concern, a high-quality lubricant can amplify pleasure and ensure a smooth, comfortable ride.

As we have learned that lubricants play a role in maximum impact, Tanner did have a lot to share about using lubricants and what to look for!

You’ll know that a lubricant is body-safe if it is paraben-free, glycerine-free, and unscented.  Some lubricants, like LELO’s Personal Moisturizer, also contain ingredients like aloe vera that help balance the skin’s PH to avoid irritation,” Tanner advised.

But Tanner continues on with these tips, especially with adding CBD into the mix, “To amplify the experience of double sonic stimulation, try a lubricant that contains CBD.  For example, LELO’s Arousal Sex Oil can help increase blood flow, reduce chronic pain, and make solo exploration more pleasurable.”

On caring or preserving the life of your toy, Tanner also shares that, “Because the LELO ENIGMA Double Sonic is made of ultra-smooth premium silicone, be sure to use a water-based lube that doesn’t erode your toy over long periods of time.”

Duly noted.

Closing out this extremely informative and helpful interview, let’s set the record straight about the G-spot, which often steals the spotlight. According to Tanner, it’s not a standalone entity but rather a small part of the vaginal wall that allows you to massage the internal portion of the clitoris. Many folks feel pressure to “find” the G-spot, but the reality is that most vulva owners need external stimulation to reach orgasm.

“If you’re having pleasurable penetrative sex, either solo or partnered, it doesn’t matter if you are hitting the G-spot every single time.  Locating the G-spot isn’t a perfect science, which is why using a toy like the ENIGMA Double Sonic that stimulates a broader erogenous area, can give you a higher chance of reaching those hard-to-reach places.”

This is where the LELO Enigma shines. It doesn’t make you choose between internal and external stimulation—you get both, making it much easier to explore your body and find what feels good, rather than focusing on some elusive G-spot goal.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month here, I wanted to chat about something super important that doesn’t get nearly enough attention—the process of finding inclusive mastectomy bras and prostheses.

Years ago, I had my first bra fitting at Nordstrom in Minneapolis, and I remember they couldn’t find a bra that fit me.

The fitter then asked, “Have you ever tried Anita or Amoena?” I hadn’t even heard of those brands—well, they are mastectomy bras.

But these bras weren’t even displayed; they were hidden in the back room. She said they didn’t want to offend anyone or make them uncomfortable. They weren’t discussed, and I remember thinking, “Why are we worried about offending people? We need to make this a positive experience and not intimidating for these women.”

So, for years, the search for comfortable and supportive post-mastectomy wear has felt like a treasure hunt.

Fortunately, times have changed over the last twenty years, and we now have sizes for all body types. It’s been great to see the inclusivity of prosthesis colors; they come in all shades and sizes.

Supporting breast cancer survivors has always been close to my heart, and I’ve seen firsthand just how much difference the right bra can make after watching close friends and my sister on their journey to healing after breast cancer.

With that said, let’s talk about how we can make sure every woman has access to what she needs to feel good in her own skin after surgery.

The Evolution  of  Mastectomy Bras

Brands like Anita, Amoena, and Royce, just to name a few, offer extended sizes, making it much easier for plus size women to find bras that fit, feel comfortable, and look good.

Elizabeth Cluff from Impact One Breast Cancer Foundation was telling me about this shift. She’s worked closely with breast cancer survivors, including many plus-size women, and she’s seen firsthand how much better things have gotten.

She said, “We’ve seen women trying to make do with ill-fitting bras that don’t offer the comfort or security they need.” Of course, there are still some challenges, especially when it comes to accessibility.

As Elizabeth pointed out, “Brands like Anita and Amoena are great, and newer companies focus on comfort, especially with how sensitive skin is post-surgery. But access is still a challenge. In metro areas, you might find more suitable places and  wider options, but in rural areas, women might only have a dollar store nearby and no idea where to find these products.”

Overall, it’s great to see how far things have come, even if there’s still some work to be done.

Why Inclusivity in Post-Mastectomy Wear Matters

Inclusivity is about so much more than just offering bigger sizes. It’s about truly understanding and addressing the unique needs of women during their recovery.

Elizabeth highlights another common issue: “For instance, I spoke with a woman preparing for reconstruction who realized she had nothing to come home to. So we focused on packing her recovery items, ensuring we have her size, like a 2X tank top.”

These real-life stories emphasize the importance of ensuring women have the right products waiting for them as they begin their recovery journey.

If you’re a plus size woman on the hunt for the perfect mastectomy bras, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Adjustable Straps: These are a total game-changer! They help you get the perfect fit, especially as your body changes post-surgery.
  • Wider Bands: A wider band offers extra support and spreads the weight, making you more comfortable throughout the day.
  • Soft Materials: Look for bras made from soft, breathable fabrics that won’t irritate your skin—because comfort is key!
  • Wireless Bras: Underwires in bras can dig into the skin, causing discomfort post-surgery. Ensure bras are wire-free to support your healing body.

Need Support with Breast Cancer Resources or Want to Get Involved?

If you’re struggling to find the right fit, reach out to organizations like Impact One Breast Cancer Foundation. Elizabeth mentioned, “We’ve made strides in educating women about recovery wear, but it’s still tough outside major cities. That’s where Impact One comes in, offering immediate support and resources.”

For nationwide support, I recommend services like the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Here, you can discover numerous breast cancer support groups.

They can guide you to the products that will help you feel more comfortable and confident.

You can get involved this October by recycling gently used bras or new and unused mastectomy bras/post-surgical bras and prostheses. It’s a small act that can make a huge difference, giving women the resources they need to feel comfortable and confident.

Making Healing and Recovery Inclusive for Everyone

Inclusivity in mastectomy bras and prostheses isn’t just about having more sizes; it’s really about making sure every woman has what she needs to feel supported during her recovery.

As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s important to think about how we can make this journey more inclusive. Every woman, no matter her size, or background, deserves to feel comfortable and confident in her own skin.

So, if you’re able to recycle a bra and essential resources for survivors or just help spread the word, it can truly make a difference for plus size breast cancer survivors.

Every woman deserves to feel whole again.

Today’s news is exciting! It marks a significant moment in the world of size-inclusive fashion: the relaunch of Nakimuli, a brand that has long captured the hearts of fashionistas seeking bold, unique, and unapologetically fun designs.

Founded by Tennille McMillan, Nakimuli has always been a trailblazer in the plus size fashion industry, blending art, fashion, and culture into every piece. And now, after a brief hiatus, they’re back with a brand-new collection that’s poised to shake up the fashion landscape once again.

A Return with Purpose

If you’ve followed Nakimuli over the years, you know that this brand is not just about clothing; it’s about identity, self-expression, and empowerment. Nakimuli was created from Tennille’s pivot from dance to fashion, taking her label of dressing as “the weird one” and turned it into the brand we know and love today. From oversized kimonos to body-hugging dresses, every piece seems to tell a story, celebrating the diversity of the women who wear them.

The relaunch brings with it the same signature aesthetic that fans of the brand have come to love, but with a renewed focus on size inclusivity. Offering sizes from small to 3X, Nakimuli continues to cater to a wide range of body types, ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of wearing something that feels uniquely “them.”

A Longtime Favorite in Plus Size Fashion

This brand has consistently been a go-to for The Curvy Fashionista readers, and for good reason. Over the years, we’ve featured the brand multiple times, applauding its fearless approach to plus size fashion and its ability to blend bold and playful prints with modern, chic silhouettes. Whether it’s a draped cardigan that elevates your everyday look or a statement dress perfect for a night out, Nakimuli’s pieces have always been about standing out, not blending in.

In fact, the brand has been a staple in our “Indie Designer Spotlight” series, where we’ve highlighted Tennille’s dedication to creating clothing that not only fits plus size bodies but celebrates them. In one of our past features, we called Nakimuli a brand that “turns heads and starts conversations,” and that sentiment remains true today. With this relaunch, they’re continuing to push boundaries, making it clear that size-inclusive fashion doesn’t have to sacrifice style or creativity.

What to Expect from the New Collection, Back in Action

So, what can you expect from the brand’s latest collection? For starters, prepare for a lot of color! Bold prints and vibrant hues are a hallmark of the brand, and this collection is no different. Think kaleidoscopic patterns, playful geometry, and a mix of textures that create eye-catching ensembles. From wispy jumpsuits perfect for fall festivals to structured pieces that add a touch of edge to your wardrobe, there’s something for everyone.

The collection also leans into the idea of versatility. Many of the pieces are designed to be styled in multiple ways, giving you the freedom to mix and match, dress up or down, and truly make the outfit your own. And, of course, the brand’s signature use of African-inspired prints remains front and center, offering a cultural nod that makes every piece feel like a work of art.

Tennille’s love for bold, unconventional designs is apparent in the new collection, which offers a mix of silhouettes—from body-hugging to flowy—that cater to different moods and occasions. Whether you’re looking for something casual and comfortable or chic and sophisticated, Nakimuli has you covered.

Why Nakimuli’s Relaunch Matters

In a fashion industry that still struggles with size inclusivity, Nakimuli’s return is more than just another collection drop—it’s a statement. At a time when the demand for size-inclusive fashion is at an all-time high, the brand is here to remind us that plus size fashion can be daring, artistic, and unapologetically bold.

While many brands are still playing catch-up, Nakimuli has always been ahead of the curve, understanding that plus size women also deserve clothing that makes them feel seen, confident, and stylish. This relaunch feels like a necessary addition to the ever-evolving conversation around body positivity and fashion, one that doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk- in creating fashion for a variety of bodies.

At a time where we JUST acknowledged the plus size brands that are no longer here, Nakimuli was on that list, but this news excites us, encourages us and hopefully can spark something for those brands gone to see that we are here to welcome them with open arms (and checkbooks).

Shop the new collection at Nakimuli.com!

Beyond the clothing, their mission has always been about empowerment. Tennille McMillan’s journey from self-taught designer to the founder of a groundbreaking size-inclusive brand is a testament to what’s possible when you merge passion with purpose.

This relaunch feels like a continuation of that mission, offering women the opportunity to wear clothing that makes them feel beautiful, bold, and unapologetically themselves.

As Nakimuli reclaims its space in the fashion world, it’s clear that they’re here to make an impact.

For those of us who have followed the brand over the years, this is the relaunch we’ve been waiting for. And for those new to the brand’s experience, get ready—you’re in for a fashionable ride!

Plus size fashion has come a long way… while we have more to go, it is important to acknowledge just where we have come from and the indie plus size brands and designers who were ahead of their time. Especially now, especially now that these indie plus size brands are no longer around!

Given that Fashion Month passed this September, I celebrated my 43rd birthday, and am feeling a little nostalgic as I reflect on these past 15 years at TCF, I wanted to show a little love and respect to those plus size brands who pushed the envelope, inspired the mainstream plus size retailers, and those who paved the way for more contemporary plus size brands to step into this space.

So, this month’s Editor’s Letter is showing and giving love to those who have inspired creativity, confidence, and community! Pouring out a fashion cocktail to acknowledge those plus size brands who are no longer delivering contemporary plus size fashion…

Are you ready??

A Few of the Indie Plus Size Brands We Wish Were Still Here

CarmaKoma was a brand that redefined rock and roll chic. Through their inspiring imagery, unapologetic styling, and great fit and fabrications, the CarmaKoma brand was quickly a TCF favorite.

Contemporary, bold, bright. Unapologetic. Playful. Sexy. This is the Monif C clothing side of the business that we miss and have loved. In many ways, Monif C paved the way for the Eloquii brand we know and love- giving us the same contemporary vibe, silhouettes, and aesthetic.

In 2019, she decided to step away from her brand, Stylish Curves highlighted that Monif said “that there were a number of reasons as to why she is taking the break. One of the main reasons she cited was the lack of support for plus size designers.” Today, Monif C is still around and has pivoted into lingerie and swim, but do we miss the void that her contemporary plus size clothing line gave us. Elevated. Sexy. Drama. Style. This LA based brand brought us high quality fits, looks, and options that brought it all. Z by Zevarra featured “versatility and elegance with a range of beautifully crafted styles to suit any occasion for the fashionable curvy woman.”

Since 2019, they have pivoted into different ventures, but their edge, perspective is sorely missed.

What do you think of these brands? This list? Are you missing them too? Did you hear of these brands? Remember them? Or are they new to you? And we haven’t even highlighted the plus size brands or size inclusive designers who JUST closed doors this year, like Mara Hoffman, Rachel Pally and Zelie for She!

Hopefully, we have not seen the last of them and that these plus size brands are forever remembered for the tables shaken, style given, and innovation served up as a blueprint for what we love.

This list is in no way exhaustive… at. all… But it does go to show where we are as a plus size community, today. And while we reminisce about these brands, it is to note those indie plus size and size inclusive brands who ARE coming up and are ones to watch! That will be for another article…

And for the brands and designers who have closed up shop? We thank you. Thank you for inspiring and showing plus size retailers where and how they can go. Thank you for showing them how it can and should be done. Plus size fashion and its growth, would not be where it is today, without you.

We’ve seen you. And what you have done has made a difference, has mattered, and is noteworthy! Being a business owner AND a creative is a challenge. Chasing your dream and vision takes courage. Putting your vision out there for others to see, shop, and celebrate? Brave.

But here, I have to call out a specific point… These designers were all filling the wide-open space that is contemporary plus size fashion. Fashion that is unapologetic, bold, tailored, unique, and playful. This segment in plus size fashion still needs indie plus size designers and size-inclusive brands to fill this space! As the retail world continues to adjust and pivot from the remnants of the pandemic, there are new opportunities in the plus size fashion space. Hire that designer to be your creative director. Hire that designer as the lead designer for the plus size range. Hire that designer to breathe life into your brand!

Contemporary fashion that pushes the envelope, inspires, and helps fill a void in the current fashion space. But as they are indie, they also need resources! Financial, operational, and do not forget, marketing. The plus size fashion space needs those who back and support new and rising designers to thoughtfully consider financially backing indie plus size designers…

This need is part of the impetus for us creating The Cultivate Awards.

I must also note… if you are an indie plus size designer or size inclusive designer, please do not hesitate to reach out and contact us to share, support, and inform our community about your brand! If you know someone who needs more love, please shoot us an email! We can only support you if you reach out and touch us!

But now, I must ask you, which brands do YOU miss in the plus size fashion space? Who do you think was ahead of their time?

Let us know what you think in the comments!
